Indigo had nothing to say about religion, and though he gave a small sigh at having lost Rhys, he was still more than excited enough about his new laptop to talk to Jory about it, and to show him what else Photoshop could do to his doodles.

Hyacinth's eyes widened, and his hair turned a vibrant red. This was the first chance he'd gotten since home to experience any kind of religion outside himself, and it felt like a lifeline. He clutched his rosary and rubbed lightly at it with his thumb, even as his brows drew together.
"My parents, my family, they do not know I am magic," he said, breathless as he always got with excitement. "We believed I am possessed. A teacher, he told me it is okay, this magic. He told my parents I am at a school for gifted, and it will help me be normal."

"I doubt you're possessed," Rhys said with a small smile. He let the cross drop back into place on his chest. "My dad is a minister and my mum works in his church. They don't particularly approve of my being interested in boyfriends instead of girlfriends. Your parents think you're getting help...so are you still talking to them, then?"

Hyacinth had chuckled at Rhys's reassurance that he wasn't possessed, something he'd been told many times now. He was already convinced, but hearing it again from a religious Muggle helped. Even if he suddenly realized that the Muggle was gay. That doused his theory that gay people were wizards in disguise, though it also relieved him of the recent thought that he might be gay, also.
"I send letters to my teacher with owls," he explained, still rubbing at his cross for comfort. "He posts them to my parents. He is very good. It is difficult to say such lies..." Again, his hair shifted toward black, the colors having gone haywire with all the emotions he was fighting.

"Yeah, I know. I had a seriously rough time with mine. It's good you're keeping in touch, though. Try to keep them," Rhys said. "What kind of teacher did you have that knew about all of this? Was it a...squib?" That was the right word, he was sure of it. Magical folks had the strangest words.

Hyacinth nodded. "Yes, squib, that is the word," he said. "He told me that this magic is not bad, that I do not need to say it in Confession, but this feels wrong. I have not seen a church at all since I was home!" He couldn't have confessed if he'd wanted to, and that was easily as difficult as the rest of it. He did wonder what had happened between Rhys and his parents, if he'd been forgiven, but his fears had been allowed a place to vent, and he was intensely grateful.

"I know of a church that's really accepting, but it isn't a Catholic church," Rhys said. "I know I'm not a priest but if you ever need someone to talk to about it you can feel free to come by here." He had spoken to many kids in similar situations, and the camps he had been sent to had been filled with equal parts of kids like that and kids that didn't believe a bit of it.

Hyacinth thought for a moment, but he couldn't justify going to a church that wasn't Catholic, even if it was accepting. "I will maybe talk to you," he settled on. "I should not be afraid to confess, but I have magic now, and my family is not close..." He didn't know if he could handle the consequences if he broke down and confessed everything. His priest at home was frightened of him, but there was love there, as a member of his flock.

"I understand that. Whenever you need, I'm here 90% of the time. I do a lot of volunteer work helping people, I'm used to lending a hand...or an ear, or whatever's needed," Rhys said. If he wasn't gay he would be a model member of any church. But it was easier not to think about how many churches would close their doors to him.
