"He's new to the whole thing," Jory said. It was a weird situation and he didn't know all of it, but he was enough in the loop to know the basics of Hyacinth's history. "I got to introduce him to a lot of things." It was fun to feel like he was smart, to be able to share.

"So prefect duty's not all bad," Indigo said. He meant it as a light tease, since Jory looked pleased about it, but he didn't think he could deal with that level of weirdness on his own. Unless everyone was that weird, and he was just freakishly normal. He certainly hoped not.
"So like, what's your life story?" he asked. "Got any more surprises?"

Hyacinth smiled, and he let his hair choose its own color for now rather than trying to keep it violet-blue. It faded back toward white as he watched Remiel sniff the toy duck as though it was another animal. "I have four sisters and five brothers," he volunteered, since Jory had thought that remarkable. "The oldest is married, and I am five." He thought for a moment about what people seemed the most interested in knowing.
"My parents do not believe the magic. They said no to Beauxbatons, and so I went to Catholic school in Luxembourg instead. I had a teacher who was a Squib, and he told my parents I am gifted, and Hogwarts is a special school to get the devil out of me so that I can be normal."

Jory glanced over at Indigo. We're still working on the demon thing. He had figured out by now that there was no good in arguing the point, that it would be best to just try to show Hyacinth that they weren't all possessed by demons or something. "Well, Hogwarts is better than that preppy French school, anyway."

The Devil. Just when Indigo had thought things couldn't get weirder, Hyacinth announced that his parents had sent him to Hogwarts to get the devil out of him. So he could be normal. And Jory seemed familiar with it. Nine siblings, ten kids in total, a country he hadn't known existed, five or six languages, and a kitten who could fit in a pocket.
Come to think of it, he just might love Hogwarts.
"So you never did any magic before you came here?" he asked.

Hyacinth shook his head. "Only accidents," he said," but I have a wand now, and many less accidents!" He didn't have to work nearly so hard to keep his hair one color with the wand in his pocket, thought the students at Hogwarts didn't seem to mind if his hair color strayed, anyway. He paid less and less attention to it in general, and was able to concentrate far better on his studies.

"So are you catching on quick?" Jory asked. He took a last bite of ice cream and continued doodling on the screen, which was nearly completely covered now. "Um...what do you do when it's all covered up?" he asked Indigo.

Indigo was still completely baffled by Hyacinth, but somehow Jory's question made it through all of his own. He glanced over at the mass of doodles. "Uh you can just delete it," he said. He paused to make sure Jory wouldn't object to everything disappearing and did a little Ctrl+A, Ctrl+X to clear it. Then he pointed out a new tool. "Click that and you can get different colors," he added, then took another bite of his sundae before it melted.

Hyacinth peered over at the screen to watch a moment before answering. "I have just stared spells. Charms," he corrected himself. "They are difficult, but Professor Trace said that I am doing well. I like the plants. Herbology. And Potions is like cooking. I feel very slow, but have learned much."

Jory's eyes brightened and he tried to change the colors, delighted all over again when he drew a line and it was blue instead of black. "I haven't taken those classes in years," he said. "Once I got my O.W.L.s I dropped them to focus on my divination type stuff."

"So are you just taking Divination?" Indigo asked, "or are you in like, Runes and Arithmancy, too?" He knew those were types of Divination, but apparently they were big enough to need their own classes, unlike the whole tea leaves and moon charts thing in the actual Divination class.

Hyacinth pulled a pocket-sized book out of his pocket that Professor laSalle had given him to use instead of his Hogwarts Requirements paper, and flipped through a couple pages. He remembered Divination just fine, and had actually asked if he could join the class in addition to everything else he was learning, but the other two weren't familiar.

"I'm in Runes, Divination, Arithmancy, Astronomy, and, just for fun mostly, Care of Magical Creatures," Jory said. "What are you guys in?" It seemed sometimes like he had added every course imaginable in third year, though there were definitely a few he had stayed far, far away from.

"I'm just taking the core classes and Arithmancy," Indigo said. "I tried out a few electives, but my parents are making me stay in that one because they don't get that Arithmancy isn't just math for wizards." It had math in it, but he hadn't learned Algebra, he'd just learned that his character number said he should have stayed in Salem.

"I will learn... Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration," Hyacinth said, reading from his list. "I must become better with these before I am allowed Divination." Apparently the electives required him to be at least at a Second Year level, and so far, he was still trying to catch up to First Years.
