Indigo's head bobbed slightly as his fingers swept over the keys, a near constant clicking in the little store that went unnoticed by the girl behind the counter. He was here for hours every weekend and as often as possible during the week, practically a fixture since he'd found out the place had Wi-Fi.
He had his hood up, hiding earbuds that were currently pumping Lady Gaga, though he'd deny it. He liked her for the art, dammit. It wasn't cold in the shop, but he liked the feel of privacy he had all curled up on a love seat in front of the fire. He sat cross-legged, but the space beside him was well-filled, discouraging company. There was his book bag, half the contents scattered across it, from books and notebooks to parchment scrolls. A few nice quills and a bottle of ink were set out on the little end table to his right, but they hadn't been touched. He wrote his essays in Word, then copied them out. He just couldn't think slow enough to write by hand.
Not that he was doing homework. He had a blog to keep up, and he was busy writing a filler post about the latest Silverstein album. It had been out a couple weeks already, but real life was boring as hell at the moment, so it was the best he had.

Jory rarely went to the bookstore. When it came to books he was interested in, he had devoured them all, and new astronomy or divination books didn't come in very often. However recently one had come out and he had jumped at the opportunity to order it. What he didn't expect to see as he turned away from the counter, heavy book tucked against him with one arm, was someone bent over what looked like a book turned sideways.
Any signs that the guy didn't want company were ignored, or possibly simply not noticed, as Jory walked up, curiously glancing over at what the guy was doing. "What is that thing?" he asked, tilting his head at it. Whatever it was, it was certainly the weirdest book he had ever seen.

Alt+Tab. Indigo hit the keys in a flash, switching from Wordpress to The New York Times online even as he lifted his head a fraction. He hadn't heard what the guy had said over his music, but he knew the look he was getting. "It's a laptop computer," he said. He recognized the guy and tugged out one of his earplugs. "Hey, you're the prefect, right? Gryffindor prefect?" As though it needed clarified. He looked back down and fumbled to change songs. Death Cab for Cutie. Better.

"Oh, hi! Yeah," Jory said, vaguely recognizing the guy when he looked up. "It's Jory. And I've never heard of a laptop. My little brother goes to muggle school and he's talked about computers before, though." He supposed there could be advantages to having a squib brother, at least he didn't walk around talking about ekeltricy or something.

That was something Indigo rarely, if ever, heard at school. Not that a lot of people approached him, for some reason. "A laptop is a portable computer," he said. He reached down to lift the cord slightly. "I could unplug this and it'd still work for a while." As long as he didn't get any closer to Hogwarts than he was in the shop. He realized he'd seen Jory in the front of that new magazine and debated saying something. He didn't want to seem stalkerish, though.

"That's cool, my brother's asked for one before but you know my parents are both magic so our house doesn't really have the right stuff for muggle stuff," Jory said as he took one of the other seats. "What do you do on it?" He didn't know much about them, even from his brother yammering on about using them at school. It was a lot of stuff that didn't seem to make a lot of sense, like some kind of huge library on the computer.

What didn't he do on it? It was a big question, but he reminded himself he was talking to someone who knew next to nothing about Muggle stuff, the way his parents knew next to nothing about magic. "It can do a lot of stuff," he said, trying to pick a place to start. "You can talk to other people, but it's not like a firecall where their head's in your room, so you can sit around in your underwear if you want." He glanced around into the shop. "Well, not here..."

"So, like, does it show them on there?" Jory asked, gesturing to the computer, and attempting to hide his amusement at imagining the guy sitting in the bookstore in his underwear. He set his book down and pulled his legs up into the chair with him. "Can you talk to anyone anywhere?" Even the firecall system had its limits.

"If they have the right computer stuff," Indigo said. Computers were tricky enough without trying to explain the Internet, too. "There are a lot of different ways to talk to someone. Sometimes you can see each other and sometimes you can't." He paused, clearing his throat lightly at a thought he'd rather not have with anyone else around. "Um, hold on..." He pulled up Facebook. "Here, you can only see the pictures people put up, so you only see what they want you to see. You talk by writing to each other. You press the key to make each letter instead of using a quill, see?" He gestured to the keyboard.

Jory leaned on his armrest to see, tilting his head at the image. Before he could comment on the pictures and the updating list in the middle, his attention was drawn to the keys. "That sounds like it'd take forever," he said. The keys weren't even in order! "Oh, what's your name, by the way? I recognize you, but I can't remember your name."

"Oh! Sorry, it's Indigo. And it really doesn't take long once you learn where the keys are." He put his fingers in place and typed up a new Facebook status—she explored my body, licked, sucked, swallowed, and when satisfied, she left. damn mosquito!—then clicked Post. "Muggles actually have classes to teach them typing." Indigo shrugged. "I just taught myself."

Jory was impressed with how quickly Indigo was able to type and was convinced he could never do it himself. Indigo. Why did everyone have to have such interesting names? "The computer's like a big thing for muggles, right? Do they all have one?" Jory figured that if they were important enough to have at a school they must be a pretty big deal.

"Uh, I'd say a lot of them do, probably most of them," Indigo said. His gaze strayed to the screen, where a couple people had already called him on using a recycled status. "Hold on..." He typed up a quick response about being distracted talking to the hottie in the book store, then closed the window. The blog he'd written during that snowstorm was pretty much legendary with his followers.
He looked back up at Jory, then glanced away. "Anyway, you can play games, and they can calculate stuff for you, like help out with math. You can look stuff up, like maps of the solar system, a lot faster than digging through five astronomy books." He shrugged.

Jory raised his eyebrow at the few words he had caught, but didn't comment on it, besides, Indigo promptly distracted him. "Maps of the solar system? Really?" He had seen models, but models could only go so far, they couldn't really reach out into the stars. "Sorry, I'm really into astronomy, I have, like, a little mini-library in the dorm."

"Cool," Indigo said. He gave a brief, but pointed, glance at the heavy-looking book Jory had been holding. "One for the collection?" he asked. It would make sense, especially since the guy didn't have Internet. God, he loved his bookmarks. They saved him so much effort dragging around textbooks sometimes. Other times, of course, he cursed wizards for not having websites. He couldn't find the twelve uses for dragon blood anywhere.
