Dare inclined his head a bit, accepting Cassie's words, even if he had no personal experience to add. "So you've got a boyfriend," he said, though in truth it was a question. The way she described love wasn't the love you felt for your family, so it wasn't a difficult guess.

Cassie blushed a little, not sure what to say. "It's complicated" she said finally, before wincing, everyone always said that and it would only raise more questions. She sighed and looked away, twirling a lock of her hair around her finger absently.

"Everything is," Dare said. Some people weren't happy if it wasn't complicated, though from the look of her, Cassie wasn't one of those people. Dare watched her a minute, since she wasn't looking at him, watched the motion of hair against her finger, the slope of her jaw. "You don't have to tell me," he said at last. "But sometimes it helps." And he didn't mind listening.

Cassie turned back to him, tilting her head as she thought about whether to tell him or not. "He's older than me and my parents wouldn't approve" she said, let alone half the school and the country. she shrugged, not wanting to say anything else.

Her reply raised more questions than it answered. Were her two statements separate? Or would her parents disapprove because he was older? Which of course raised the question of how much older than her he was. Dare's lips thinned imperceptibly. He could tell by the set of her face that she didn't want to talk about it, so his questions were just going to have to wait. He let them go.
Dare poured himself another glass of water, then sat back again, lounging comfortably in his seat. "Are you close to your parents?" he asked, letting himself take the backroad through his curiosity. Maybe some of them could be answered with this new topic of conversation. Maybe not, but maybe it'd be easier for her to talk about.

Cassie nodded, careful to keep the relief due to the change of topic from her face. "Definitely" she answered. "I grew up as an only child, and although I was very close to other wizarding families in the area, I was always close to my parents. We have a very mature relationship, but they can be very protective as I'm their only child, and their daughter." she said, explaining the relationship she had with them. "I'm always Dad's 'baby girl'" she said with a grin, swapping to water.

If they were that close, it implied that there was more to whatever relationship she had with her boyfriend, for lack of a better word, than a couple years. Dare watched Cassie carefully for signs, though he was also careful not to appear to be staring. There was a fine line sometimes between observation and rudeness, but Dare was an observer at heart. "Do you send them a lot of owls during term? Keep in touch and everything?" If she did, it was a wonder they didn't know...whatever it was.

"Normally, but I've been so bust recently. Juggling dancing, the shop and schoolwork has been tough. I hardly have time for anything else." she said honestly. It was true, she hadn't been sending as many as usual, but it was only partly due to her reluctance for her parents to find out. "I wouldn't change it for the world though, I hate being bored" she said, smiling.

"Boredom is a state of mind," Dare said sagely, though his eyes glittered lightly at the statement. "If you look at things right, it's damn near impossible to get bored." Dare gave silent thanks for whatever divine providence had given him his artistic eye.

Cassie listened, not sure whether she agreed with him or not. "So what do you do to amuse yourself?" she asked, "You can't be listening to music all the time, or talking to amazing people such as myself" she joked, however modest her opinion of herself was.

Dare's lips curved into a half smile at her tease. "If only I could," he said, teasing back. "But really, I mean, you can just look at stuff, or at least that's what I do. Just look past what's there, look at everything. Shapes, colors, reflections, shadows. Shadows in shadows, in reflections. There's details that people tend to look past, and then there's details you can't even see until you've been staring at the same chair, the same patch of grass for an hour and a half. That's what I do. I look, I look past, and I look again." It all made perfect sense to him.

Cassie nodded, she knew what he was talking about. It was how they learnt to dance, well partly at least. "You watch the same thing over and over again, until you're not really watching it anymore. You're watching the way the light falls, the way it moves through the space around it." she said, she was used to staring at the same thing over and over again. She looked up at Dare and smiled. "It's how I learnt to dance" she explained. She was intrigued with his interpretation though, do you watch people that way?" she asked curiously.

"When they're not paying attention," Dare said, lips curving into just the shadow of a self-deprecating smirk. "Seriously though, why not? You pay attention to things like that, you see more than what's on the surface. You know more about people that way, more about life and everything. Sometimes people don't like all that stuff being seen, though. It's why people hate being stared at. It feels too...I don't know, intimate."

Cassie's own smile shadowed Dare's. She tilted her head at Dare. "So if you were to stare at me, what would you find?" she asked, she didn't mind being watched. After being centre stage in so many performances she basked in the attention when it was hers to command.

"Hm, I don't know," Dare said, even as he shifted in his seat, turning slightly toward Cassie. He looked at her, not as intently as he might if he were drawing her, but enough to really see her. "You know, you told me enough already that you'll probably think I'm b.s.ing," he said. "I see someone who's in love with life, with simple pleasures. Dancing, you said, but other things too. A favorite food, a pet. I see someone who loves easily, even if you hold reservations." He paused at her eyes. "And I know you're holding something..." It had to do with her soft of boyfriend, or at least part of it did. "Am I right?"
