"That's the problem, isn't it?" Dru asked the greenhouse. "Is it worth being with him when I don't know if we'll ever amount to anything? Not that I'm technically held down, I could be with another guy if I met one I liked enough." Her eyes darted over to Silver, she could see him as someone that, outside of the situation, she could want to be with, though she doubted he would catch that.

It was the timing of that glance that sent a rush of warmth through Silver's blood. It was his imagination, he told himself. It was a coincidence. Girls just didn't like him like that; he only ever made it to good friend status, so he pushed the thought away as his own wishful thinking.
"I wouldn't know what to tell you," he said at last, still looking at Dru, despite the past moments' confusion. "I'm not really the ladies' man myself, so..." He shrugged lightly. Something in the back of his mind prodded him to tell her she should just give up on this guy, but he resisted the urge.

Dru was glad that there was no judgment in Silver's eyes, even if she wished it had never come up. "I guess the only thing I can really do is wait a little more and see what happens. I don't have much choice, and I'm not tied down, so I can still try other things, right?" She sighed, and tried for a smile, "Thanks for listening. You didn't have to, not even an hour together and you're listening to my problems." At least she hadn't run him off.

Silver looked down at the book in his hands and shrugged. "We all have problems," he said, not to demean hers, but to put it in the perspective that he didn't really mind listening. In the grand scheme of things, anyway. He tried to brighten up as he raised his eyes to Dru's again. "And yeah, if you're a free agent, you could act like one." He couldn't say what had come over him, only that the words were out, and he had to tell himself that she didn't know he'd meant anything more than the words themselves.

Dru met his eyes, she liked Silver, and his statement made her smile. "Yeah, I could." She bit her lip and looked down at his hands. Never in her life had she thought that she'd even be considering being with two guys at the same time. And now it seemed like a distinct possibility. "So what do you write?" she asked, partly because she wanted to know more about him, and partly to create more distance between the topic of Chase.

Silver looked down at his hands, his first reflexive thought immediately banished to the recesses of his mind. "I write everything, anything. Whatever comes to mind." Which, lately, had been a mess. "I just started in this book," he said, tapping the cover--anything to work out the sudden tention in his fingers. "Just like, a list and some poetry so far. My other notebooks are up in my trunk." Even if he didn't typically share what he wrote, this still felt like a much safer topic than the one they'd been on before.

"I was never able to write poetry, I don't have a poetic bone in my body," Dru said, smiling at him and looking back up. Even though the conversation had moved on, she couldn't help looking him over and wondering. Maybe it had never seemed like such an issue because she hadn't met another guy to spark an interest in her, but now that she had met Silver, she was curious. "Have you always done it, or did you have to learn?"

Silver opened his mouth to say he always had, then paused, rethought, and took a different tack. "I started when I was a kid, but it was really bad. Seriously bad. So I'm going to say I had to learn. About anyone can write bad poetry, right?" And he'd never said his poetry was good now. It was just better. A lot better.

"I don't think I can even write bad poetry," Dru said, laughing lightly. "Maybe I could read it sometime?" She didn't imply that she wanted to read it at the moment, unless he wanted her to, but that she would like to in the future when they got together again.

Silver's lips curved, a light showing of straight white teeth that brightened his eyes. "Yeah, I mean, if you want to." He chuckled at himself. "If you can read chicken-scratch," he amended. His handwriting really was terrible sometimes. He'd pause in the middle of a word to think about the next, quill still to the parchment, letting ink well up into a blot. Strangely, the idea of letting Dru read his poems didn't shoot quite the sense of dread into him that letting people read usually did. Something about that ease between them. With those thoughts, his crush swelled again.

"I'll make sure to sit close to you so you can interpret if I need it." Dru didn't think she'd need it, over the years she had gotten pretty good at reading bad handwriting, one of her best friends had horrible handwriting, and so with all of the notes passed between them she considered herself something of a pro. But having him close seemed like a good idea. She was pushing any little thought of Chase, wanting to just focus on the new guy and have a normal conversation.

Silver's gaze flickered away, down to his book at the uncontrollable thoughts that went through his mind. Still, his smile remained; the idea of sitting close to her, the picture of them sitting together just looking at his poetry, was irresistable.
He thought about opening his book now, showing her what he'd written since he'd been on the train, but he didn't want to seem too eager, didn't want her to be able to guess his train of thought. He couldn't imagine she could like him like that, so he'd keep everything to himself, just treasure his idealistic crush.
And then he realized he'd forgotten to speak, something that happened pretty often, actually. His gaze rose, finding Dru again. "So..." Awkwardness.

Dru grinned and looked down. "So do you do anything else? Or are you purely a writer?" The question was to keep the conversation up, when they weren't talking it was much to easy to think about Chase, but she wanted to focus on Silver. She looked back up at him, her eyes sparkling because of the ease of conversation, even with the odd awkward moment.

God, she had beautiful eyes. It was everything Silver could do to focus on the conversation and not tell her again, though now that he had, he was glad he hadn't kept it to himself. "I pretty much just write," he answered. "Sometimes I'll draw something on the edge of the page, but it's worse than the poetry." He gave a somewhat crooked boyish smile at that.

Dru couldn't help but look at his smile, he had a great smile that made him look all the better, not that he didn't look good without smiling. Her teeth found her lip, she felt like she was back in the third year when she had gotten her first actual crush. Though she wasn't sure if she was getting a crush on Silver, because she knew she still felt the same for Chase. She decided not to think about it and instead tried to figure out something else to say. "Doodles are always fun, they're not supposed to look good." Dru had been known to doodle on the edge of her papers to pass the time in class.
