It was the middle of the night, but Chase couldn't sleep. Not that he wanted to tonight. He was sure that even if his mind managed to shut down, he'd be plagued by surreal dreams that tormented instead of just leaving their message and disappearing with the morning sun.
He'd found the kitchens a few weeks ago, and it was usually quiet, except for house-elves, who were more than happy to leave him to his thoughts and a plate loaded with food.
Tonight, he sat at one of the long tables directly beneath the Great Hall, the usual plate and mug of butterbeer inviting him to eat, though somehow, he kept forgetting.

Dru was heading back to her Dorm after a long evening at the club and decided to stop by the kitchens. With all that was in Hogsmeade, there were still times she wanted to go by, see the elves, and get a nice pastie or something of the sort. She was surprised when she came in and saw Chase sitting at one of the tables. She came up to him and sat down beside him, "Hey," she said, getting the impression that something was up, but not saying anything.

Speak of the Devil. Of all the people to find him here, it was the one he wanted some time to think over. "Hey," he echoed. Chase straightened slightly, nudging his plate an inch or so away. He was done with it. He turned to look at Dru, trying to put this evening's thoughts together with the girl sitting next to him. "Couldn't sleep?" Chase had wandered the grounds after he left Storm, ignoring the wind and the cold. His hair was tousled, and he smelled lightly of smoke and mint, from one of the fluxweed cigarettes he rarely touched anymore. His eyes were uncharacteristically dark, deep brown rather than their usual indian red.

Dru barely caught the smell, but she couldn't place it, it reminded her of something from a long time ago, but what exactly it was wouldn't come to her. "I'm just coming in from the club, met this weirdo guy there too." She wondered if he had heard of Emilian. "What about you?" she asked, noting his messy hair and dark eyes.

Nothing you want to hear about, he almost said. But of course, if he did say that, she'd insist that she wanted to hear, and he hadn't decided what, if anything, he was going to say. He skipped to slightly more recent events. "Been walking the grounds," he said simply. Chase looked away from Dru, back to his rejected plate, where he picked up a thick slice of toast. He took a large bite, unconsciously declaring that line of questioning undesirable.

Dru raised an eyebrow, "Why so late?" Generally people weren't out so late on the grounds unless that had good reason, a meeting with someone or something like that. Although, he may have just wanted out of the castle. But Dru couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

"Couldn't sleep," Chase answered. That much was true. He hadn't tried, but he knew it wouldn't work if he did. "If I can't sleep, I may as well walk." Sleep had always been the first thing to go when he was stressed. Chase dropped his toast and looked back at Dru, putting a smile on his face for the first time since she'd come in. His eyes were still dark, but he was trying. There was no reason to bring her down, make her miserable with him. "So who was this weirdo at the club?" That sounded like as good a change of subject as anything.

Dru didn't really appreciate the change in subject, but went along with it anyway. "This guy Emilian, he's been raising cain around here." Her mind went back to their conversation, what little it had been. He had implied things about Michael she never would have considered, he wasn't someone she wanted to spend any time around, especially without the safety of being behind a counter.

Chase frowned. "I've heard of him." His eyes sparked with color for one brief moment. "Want me to kick his ass for you?" The words were said jokingly, but there was a sincerity behind them that would be obvious.

Dru smiled, "I think I can take care of myself. But thank you anyway." She didn't want Chase getting involved in it, the only reason she was involved was that Michael was one of the main characters in the drama.

Chase shrugged casually. "If you change your mind, let me know." He nudged his plate toward Dru. "Want some?" She was in the kitchen, after all. And it was getting too close to silence. Chase was beginning to have to consciously push thought away again.

Dru looked over the plate for a second before picking up a piece of bread. "What have you heard about him?" she asked before taking a bite. It didn't seem as though he had heard anything from Savannah, she didn't really see him as the kind to let it go so easily if he had known what had happened to her.

Chase shrugged. "I heard he's a predator. I'm not even sure what he's doing, no one talks about it, but it's not hard to figure out that something's up." There was no reason to go into detail. Dru wouldn't want to hear about his observations on other girls. And that would just lead to more awkward questions, anyway.

"He didn't try anything with me, other than asking if I was single." She had been very glad to be able to say that she wasn't. There was no doubt in her mind that he would have tried something if she had said yes.

Chase almost asked Dru how she'd answered. Did they really have a relationship? Was this all it was? Just hanging out, like he did with every other girl, only this way he wasn't supposed to kiss them. What he'd done tonight with Storm was definitely out of the question. "He doesn't sound so bad," Chase said absently.
