Ayla laughed and shook her head. "No, I don't mean physical fights, anyway. I just mean there's no umph in them, no drive, no ambition, nothing. They're all loyal and friendy and that's about it. They're what don't fit in the other houses." The house seemed unified in its lack of identity, but it weirded Ayla out a little.

Castiel frowned a little. That sounded like Mari, at least partly. Marius was definitely loyal and friendly. Of course, it still wouldn't have helped him, considering he was apparently so obviously a Ravenclaw. How could anyone really tell your House just by standing in a dark corridor for three minutes?
"Is there at least a dueling club here?" he asked. So maybe he loved the drama and flair of bowing, of all of it, but he loved the duel easily as much.

Ayla shook her head. "No, I heard Professor Blackwood-Hardt is lookin' for interested people, though. The defense one, not the transfiguration one," she clarified. She'd heard it a couple of times as vague possibilities of a club, sometimes general defense, sometimes focused on dueling. From the stories of the teacher's history, it would be a hell of a club.

"Honestly, how do you keep them straight?" Castiel asked. "Do you really have to say which one every time?" It was so much easier the way they did it in the magazine, where they just called them by their first names. Dare was the one with the colorful hair, and Michael was the Death Eater. The ex-Death Eater.

"Don't really talk about the professors much," Ayla said. "A lot of the students still remember the two in school, though, so their first names'll pop out sometimes. Lots of the teachers are so young it's easy for some people to use their first names." It made her feel kind of awkward to use first names, but what other kids did was their business.

Suddenly, Castiel had a lot of questions he wouldn't let himself ask. Did the professors let people use their names? If so, which ones? He was sixteen and that was pretty much legal, right? Did being an adult mean he could talk to them like other adults? Oh, he wasn't doing homework, but he was far too eager for classes to begin!
"So where do people hang out around here?" There, that wasn't nerdy. He hadn't asked where the library was or anything. Of course, Druscilla Grace worked there, and she was the sexiest thing in glasses he'd ever seen. Her and Rowan Trace. Ooh, that would make for some steamy glasses...

"Depends, Ravenclaws go for the Library, Hufflepuffs, too, or down by the lake. Slytherins and Gryffindors tend to go to Hogsmeade or nip over to London," Ayla said. She was sure that there was the odd crossover, but that was what she had seen, mostly. "Some years the forest is a popular place to go, it's been kind of ignored lately, though."

Castiel stopped himself just short of pointing out that the forest was Forbidden, as stated directly in its name. There was even an ad he saw in Cauldron sometimes. He didn't know what Ford Anglias were, but if they were anything like Acromantulas, he wanted nothing to do with them.
"There's that club in Hogsmeade, isn't there?" he asked.

"Yeah, it's picked up a little recently, but once people turn seventeen they'd rather just apparate somewhere else. The club's got some theme night things, I've only been a few times," Ayla said. She normally stayed to herself, but it was fun to get out in a crowd sometimes. "It's not a bad place, it can be fun. On muggle night they have a lot of muggle food and candy and stuff."

Ooh, Muggle night. Kawaii-Kun would love that one. Castiel was immediately distressed to realize that he hadn't thought of Mari in several minutes, and the brief spark of interest in his eyes faded. "Does everyone just stick with their Houses all the time?" he asked. "Like when they're out? They made us sit all separate, and that was lame."

"I heard it used to be worse, even when I was a first year it was worse than it is now. Now everyone just kind of hangs with who they like. Other than the feasts you aren't forced to sit with your house," Ayla said. "There aren't really a lot of 'em. Mostly we just go in whenever we got time to eat." That usually meant she went in and grabbed something quick before leaving.

That wasn't too bad. His school hadn't had any assigned seating, though the cliques tended to hang out together. He was the only goth guy, so sitting with the goths was always fun, though the harajuku wannabes were fun, too. He just couldn't handle them for long at a time, and he knew he lost goth cred every time he did it.
"So who do I have to watch out for? Everyone was wearing robes, so I couldn't tell the jocks from the preps." Both of which he'd rather avoid, if he could help it. Preps were annoying as hell, and jocks were mean. Maybe all the jocks were in Slytherin.

Ayla had to think about that one for a minute before answering. "There's no one really dangerous. There's a couple pair of Slytherin twins that cause problems. The pair of brothers are just kind of annoying and the brother/sister pair are f~ing creepy as hell. Half the time they're sitting in each other's laps and near kissing. Quidditch isn't really big, there are games and stuff but it's not a big deal. The only guy I know of that's big into it is a Hufflepuff that's on some reserve team."

Castiel had read about the Phrixus twins, but hadn't been sure he really believed it. He couldn't think of another pair of twins that were Slytherins, though. Dare and Silver were twins, weren't they? But Silver was a Ravenclaw... Silver Blackwood was a Ravenclaw! Castiel suddenly felt much better about the House he'd been put in.
"Are you Muggle-Born?" he asked, glancing pointedly at Ayla's skateboard. Purity hadn't been much of an issue at his school, and it didn't occur to him that it might be a rude question.

"Dunno. My dad's run off, dunno who he is, mum left me with her sis. Was raised magic, at least. I started skating 'cause of some guys in town when I was younger, begged for this for my birthday one year," Ayla said, looking down almost lovingly at her board. Then she looked back up at Castiel. "You don't wanna go around asking people about their blood. Some people get really...touchy. The year before I got here there was a Death Eater attack, there are still people here that remember it, some were even part of it."
