Keith was glad the day's classes were over and he could head home. The weekend had been stressful and the not-so-passive-aggressive owl he had gotten over lunch hadn't done much to let him relax. He had the main part of his robes slung over his arm, hand in his pants pocket, as he walked. Sure, he knew there wasn't really anything wrong with the relationship he had with his best friend, but perhaps it was time for him to finally move on. If the first step to that was making his friend angry, then he supposed it had to be done.

With the last class of the day finished, Dare's spirits were up, and though he still wore his robes, it was a technicality. They hung loose over his shoulders, more so he didn't have to carry them than anything else, and flapped lightly in his wake. His mind was on Michael, on the next hour until Defense Against the Dark Arts ended for the day. Maybe he'd go take Elouai for a walk, More likely he'd take a long shower and try to get some of this excess energy out of his system.
As he neared Keith, he looked up and his eyes caught on a face that looked far too melancholy for the end of the day. "Bad class?" he asked, slowing down.

Keith looked up and shrugged. "Not any worse than normal," he said. "Bad weekend." His own steps slowed as he closed on Dare. "I was just heading home." A talk would be nice, though, especially if he somehow managed to get his mind off of the weekend for a few minutes before locking himself up again.

"Same here," Dare said, "but I was going that way." He pulled to a stop and gestured past Keith, down the corridor. "Got nothing to do for an hour, though." Not really, and especially not if he could talk Michael into some quality time later. He was desperately needing that time, and there had been precious little of it lately.
"So what's going on?" Dare gave a look which said quite clearly that he wouldn't push, but he'd listen. He may as well, and he'd been needing more social contact for a few years now.

"Ah..." Keith glanced around. "Nothing I should talk about where students can hear, I'd guess." There was mentioning it and then there was actually talking about it. He couldn't justify full out talking about it all out in the open like this. Even if it wasn't just bedroom info, it was all very personal and he didn't like the idea of the students knowing his issues.

Dare's brows arched slightly behind his fringe, and he gave a reflexive glance down the corridor before settling his eyes back on Keith. "Do you want to talk about it?" he asked. If it was personal, probably not, and Dare didn't know Keith well enough to say he'd want to hear, but he'd more or less offered already, and to be completely honest with himself, he was bored. Sitting at home every night was wearing on him, especially without Friday nights at the clubs.

Keith wasn't sure. Rowan might as well have ignored him when he tried to talk about it, but then again Rowan wasn't interested in any of it and Matthew had kind of dropped a bomb on him there. "I don't know," he said finally. "I mean, I'd like to, sure. But I don't want to just drop everything on you, especially not when you seem to be in a great mood again."

"I'm always in a great mood," Dare said, as little truth as there might currently be to the claim. He was in a good mood now, but it was Friday, and part of him still leapt, as though he'd be putting on his makeup and his best clothes to go out.
"Don't take this the wrong way, but I've seriously got nothing better to do." Relieving his own physical tension was a relief, but not nearly as much fun with as often as he was doing it.

Keith thought for a moment and sighed, then shrugged, "Why not. At least I'll keep you from being bored for a few minutes." It would do him good to talk it out. He would have to go talk to his friend eventually, but right now he knew it would just turn into a fight, and that wasn't something that he wanted to deal with at all.

Dare echoed Keith's shrug. It felt repetitive doing so, but his mind was a complete blank. He was so used to just staying home, and lately not even leaving school grounds, that suggesting a place to go talk was beyond him. There were only so many places that wouldn't be crowded with students. Not to mention that he personally had nothing to talk about. There was Michael's condition—still—and class, which didn't vary much aside from the occasional semi-permanent transfiguration for him to fix during his breaks. "Lead the way," he said.

Keith ducked into the first empty classroom they came to and took a seat atop one of the desks. "Have you ever had a friend-with-benefits?" he asked, laying his robes across the desk beside of him. For some reason he doubted it, but he knew better than to just assume no and speak with that assumption. Maybe he only doubted it because he knew Dare had been with Michael for so long.

Dare tried to keep from looking too surprised, no matter that he was. He could see now why Keith hadn't wanted to talk about this in the corridors. He parted his lips to say no, but caught himself and paused a moment to shut the door. "Sort of," he admitted, then "Yes." The benefits hadn't extended as far as Keith likely meant, but that was how he'd thought of himself and Markise, even if he could see now why Markise had thought they'd been together.

That surprised Keith, but the sense of relief that Dare would actually have some idea as to what he was talking about outweighed it. "It can be messy, can't it?" he asked. "My best friend, Matthew, and me, we've always kept it open and clear. We knew how it could turn out and neither of us wanted to mess anything up. We always talked about everything and when one of us, normally me, started dating someone we stopped. But ever since I moved here he's been...I don't know, weird, and we fought this weekend."

Dare's lips quirked into a humorless smile. "Yeah, it didn't work out for me either," he said. Would Markise ever have said anything if he hadn't gotten with Michael? And what in the world had possessed him to wait until immediately before their partnership ceremony to do so? "He didn't say anything until after Michael and I took our vows." And Dare had never even told Michael. He glanced over at Keith. "That's just between us, though," he said.

Keith nodded, "I won't tell." It wasn't his place. "What's bad is that it's worked for...the past five years? On and off, like I said. I mean...right now is the longest we've ever gone, though. We never did it often, maybe a couple times a month, but it's been over a year since we had a break." It was time for a break, the weekend had proven that. He shook his head and looked over at Dare again. "Are you and yours still friends?"
