Markise had been standing by, wanting to help, but unable to think of a thing that wouldn't make it all worse. Thought was lost, however, at Maverick's sling. Markise had worked hard to convince Ariel that he was worth something, and damned if they were going to start over. Damned if he was going to let the bastard turn his wand on Ariel. With a string of the foulest curses he knew, he threw himself onto Maverick's back, wrapping both arms around his neck to hold on. Brindle would be proud.

Ariel stared at his brother in disbelief. Surely the man didn't mean that, however big of a disappointment he was Maverick couldn't want him dead, and it was hard to fully ignore Maverick's last jab. Before he could recover enough to actually do anything, he heard Markise and saw pale arms snake their way around Maverick's neck.

Maverick's hands shot up to the arms around his neck as he staggered with the sudden added weight. The touch made his skin crawl. His fingers dug into the skin before one hand dropped to reach back and do whatever damage he could to the guy's side. He let out a curse and debated just falling back onto the guy, then looked around for the nearest pole or wall.

Ariel didn't know what to do, if he went through with his urge to tackle Maverick back to the floor he would hurt Markise. He didn't want Markise involved in the fight, this was between the two brothers. His eyes darted between the two of them. A moment later and he was in front of his brother, a hand pulling at the one digging into Markise's arm and he met his brother's eyes. "Let him go," he said, then flicked a glance up at Markise. "Get down."

Markise was far beyond just letting go and stepping back. This wasn't just between Ariel and Maverick, not with him here. Ariel didn't have to do this alone, and Markise's conscience wouldn't allow him to stand by and watch his best friend get beaten down, in whatever form. He hurt from the nails digging into his arm, from the fist that had swung back into his side, and he didn't for a moment believe that Maverick would stop because a brother he hated had told him to.
Markise looked at Ariel with damp, wild eyes, a mixture of fury, pain and fear, and gave a brief shake of his head, tightening his arms. A mere heartbeat after Ariel had spoken he answered in a deep, determined voice. "I'll let go when he f~ing apologizes!" Or when he passed out from lack of air.

Ariel's eyes widened behind his hair and he found Maverick's eyes again. He knew better than to expect his brother to apologize. Then he was attacking the man, meeting whatever he could with fists and uncaring if it was an unfair fight now. Something in Markise's eyes and voice pushed him forward, he could let go everything that had built up over years of abuse.

Maverick coughed at the tightening of those arms and what breath was left escaped with hits to his sides, there was too much going on for him to make enough sense of it to avoid much. And he was being choked by the spider monkey on his back. He tried to push Ariel off of him and, with a last glance around, took a few steps back and fell back into a pole to get the idiot off his back.

Markise let out a soft cry as the breath was knocked out of him. A shock of pain tore through his back, reverberating through him and clamping his jaw together a moment after. His arms loosened a moment, but he reflexively tightened them again, his instincts telling him that if he let go, he'd be at his attacker's mercy, something he couldn't let happen.
Whatcha gonna do about it, queerbait?

If Ariel hadn't been seeing red before, that cry sent him over that edge. A fist curled into Maverick's shirt and the other met the rough chin. He didn't pay attention to the smaller number of people in the room or the few onlookers that were left watching in absent silence. It wouldn't have surprised him to know that many of the people that worked for Maverick didn't really care if the guy was getting beaten up.

Maverick had gasped a few quick breaths before the arms tightened again and what little breath he had gotten was lost with that unexpected punch. He leaned forward a little and landed a return punch, hoping to get Ariel off him long enough for him to deal with the thing on his back. He rammed back into the pole again, bringing his head back against the one behind him as he did so.

Markise cried out again, but the sound was cut short as his lungs compressed. He wasn't a fighter, and he hadn't anticipated that blow to his face. He saw stars, and his arms released, raising to the sharp throbbing as he slid into a heap on the floor. There were stars, flickering, slithering sparks on a black field, and his hands were hot and wet. He was terrified of losing consciousness, and struggled not to give in, but he wan't sure he could.
You're goin' to hell, f~ot.

Ariel had stumbled back a step or two, but the red film he was seeing turned solid as Markise slid to the ground. "No!" He cursed as he flew at Maverick, hoping to knock him down while he was still recovering from Markise on his back. Markise wasn't supposed to get hurt! It wasn't supposed to happen like that, but what could Ariel have done to stop it once they had been seen?

Finally, he was free, but freedom wasn't much when Maverick was coughing trying to get his breath back. A hand came to his throat as his eyes moved up in time to see Ariel coming at him in a rage. He was knocked to the ground. His head bounced off the floor and he saw stars at the second blow to his head in under a minute. Then he was being straddled and he was trying to grab flying fists.

Ariel was too furious to let Maverick get a good grip on him, he had always been the faster one. "I would have been better alone!" he said, his voice raising as the sound of his fists emphasized what was being said. "All you did was f~ing beat me down! 'Hey, Maverick, I got O's in all my classes' 'Okay, get me a beer'. What the hell kind of brother are you?!"

"You're not my brother!" Maverick shouted back when he got a grip on one of those flying wrists. "No f~ing f~'s my brother, no f~ing druggie's my brother!" He managed a punch up against Ariel's chin. This shouldn't have been such an uphill battle, this shouldn't have been a fight to begin with, but it felt like it had been a long time coming between them.
