"Then how's anyone supposed to help him?" Jory asked, eyes darting over to Quinn. It had been hard not to say I or we since he didn't know his place in all this. He couldn't just pretend like he didn't want to help, even if Quinn had the marble now. Now that was something he would have to ask her about.

Quinn shook her head, "if it's killing him, I won't let it. I don't care what it takes, I'm going to fix it." If this was somehow her doing, to encourage it, when she hadn't known, she was going to fix it. "What's the best way to approach it. Cold turkey, or weaning him off." If it was up to her then she would choose to wean him off, she still didn't understand how bad Lyric was. It didn't make sense to her when she knew that it hadn't affected her in the same way.

Ariel snorted, "There isn't a best way. No matter what you do, it's going to hurt him and he'll be really sick, I've heard of people not even living through it. Try to get him to a hospital if you're serious about it." Although, he seriously doubted that either Quinn or Jory would be able to convince Lyric, who was so far into it that he was dealing, to quit. "There's nothing else to say, I have to get to the dungeons. Good luck." Then he turned to leave.

Jory watched Ariel turn, his eyes wide, before he looked at Quinn. "I want to help," he said, searching her face and refusing to let himself stare at the marble. That wasn't something that could be left alone, but he couldn't see anything good coming from her catching him staring at her chest. He hoped she wouldn't just tell him to go away.

As she watched Ariel walk away from her, Quinn felt like her world was crumbling. It sounded like Lyric was killing himself slowly, even after the other night. She allowed the tears she wanted to hold in check to well up, enough to make her eyes shimmer. "How? I thought I did so well, when I stopped him from jumping off the tower. I thought it meant that he didn't want to die. I mean I knew...I know he's in pain," but I can't watch him die.

Jory's eyes flickered between Ariel and Quinn and didn't immediately reply, even when he saw the tears in Quinn's eyes. Lyric had almost jumped from a tower? Things were really going bad for him, then. Finally, he took a deep breath and looked up at Quinn. If he was going to help, he needed to know what was going on with them, first. "Are you two together?" he asked. "He gave you my marble." He gestured toward the little ball, for now not thinking of the possibility that it might not be the same one.

Quinn's hand covered the marble that had become a talisman to her recently, when Lyric had given it to her, she'd known it meant something, just not what that something was. "I didn't know it was yours." She looked at Jory gauged his reaction, even though her carefully structured happiness was spiraling faster than she could shut the door on her panic. "He gave it to me after I stopped him from jumping."
What was she going to do, she asked for no expectations, knew it was what Lyric needed from her. Quinn looked down at the marble, her hair shielding her face, "we've been seeing each other when Lyric is at Hogwarts." They got to talk before whatever Lyric had given her kicked in. But if it was that dangerous, should she be doing it, let alone encouraging him.

Jory dropped his eyes to his hands, to the nearly shimmering ring from Eros that he hadn't had the heart to stop wearing. "When I was little a girl gave me that marble because she liked me," he said. "I gave it to him last term, he even asked me if it meant he'd have to give it back because of what it meant." He had hoped that, even with them falling apart, Lyric would keep it. It had actually meant something to both of them.

Quinn rubbed her finger against the glass of the marble, is that what it meant, did Lyric like her, in a way that was more than just what happened behind closed doors. It somehow calmed the panicking, allowed her to force it back into the hole where it belonged. Instead she allowed determination, borrowed from the same place that she had brought it out of to take him off of the tower. "Do you think that means what it meant then? Do you think Lyric likes me?" Did he think that she could mean enough that Lyric might have something to hold onto, something to give him incentive not to die? Quinn lifted her head up to him, allowing her blue eyes to focus on his blue eyes.

Jory avoided Quinn's eyes and shook his head. "I don't know." He couldn't think of any other reason that Lyric would give the marble away, but he didn't want to admit that maybe Lyric actually liked her. He didn't want her to mean so much to Lyric, because then she would just be able to prove that he couldn't help even more than before.

Whether Jory knew or not, the seed of hope was there, and that hope would be enough until she could find the happiness again. "How do you think we could help Lyric? He's been on drugs since I met him." No need to hide it if someone had already told him. She hadn't known that it was as bad as it apparently was. She let her hair lower over her face again, "he was really bad that night though."

Jory shook his head again, "I don't know. I mean...I couldn't even get him to talk before he started them." He had gotten him to talk once, and that had been the beginning of everything going wrong. "You got further than I did." At least, he thought she did. He didn't know for sure what all the two had talked about, but it seemed like it was a lot more than he had been part of.

Quinn looked down at the tiny marble again, hoping that she had gotten farther in a lot of ways, and knowing in other ways that she hadn't. "You know when I first met him, he thought we should be friends, he was adamant about it." She looked at Jory, "he didn't even know very much about me then. And now...I know some things, mostly things that don't mean a whole lot." She was quiet for a moment, "I don't know very much about his past, just that someone hurt him. I couldn't tell you if he had a dog, or a brother, or lived in a shoe."
She was relatively sure he was an only child, he had mentioned his mother, betrayed an issue with his father, but not told her much. "Most of what I know I guessed in things he didn't say or skirted saying."

Jory finally looked up at Quinn. Maybe she didn't know as much as he thought she did. She either didn't know about what had happened, or didn't want to give it away. Part of him hoped it was the former, so that he would at least have something. "I don't know a lot, but I don't know how what I know would help." He didn't even know how that affected things now. "What if he just runs away from us?"

Quinn thought about it, thought about the likelihood that Lyric might run. Then she looked up, stubborn determination in her eyes, "then we play dirty." She took a deep breath, "and in order to play truly dirty we have to have make sure our wand is ready, and our defenses are stacked. If it's as bad as Ariel says," if it was as bad as her step-father fought to hide what had happened to Kiley, "then he's not going to fight clean, he's going to attack us where it hurts, and I know he knows where to hurt me. Now I want to know where to hurt him." And she silently begged his forgiveness that it had to be that way.
