Jory had become so much more introverted and down than he had ever been. At least at MI he had been happy most of the time, if quiet. It couldn't be that bad to just want to be happy, could it? It seemed like all he was hearing when he was actually able to talk to people was how he wasn't good enough, or that he wasn't acting right, or that he needed to change who he was.
Now, he was trying to get to the dorm so that he could hide away in the relative safety of his bed behind his curtains. When he turned the corner he instantly recognized both Quinn and Ariel and had stopped, only to put his head down and start walking, quicker than before, to get away from them. When he was close, however, he heard the word drugs and Lyric's name and he stopped again. What were they talking about?

You're not...making him take them, are you?, her eyes couldn't have gotten wider at that, and she felt a defensive surge of protectiveness cover herself and Lyric. "Why would I make him take anything?" the thoughts of dangerous had been tantalizing to follow up on, Lyric had never told her that it was dangerous, but his other words covered up the thoughts of following that inquiry. "He says that he can't touch me sober. I already talked to Jory and Markise about this. I'm willing to wait as long as it takes for him to be able to touch me sober."

Ariel all but laughed at that. "If he can't touch you now, then letting him take drugs isn't going to help. Especially if he's as bad as he looks, he'll end up in the hospital before he lets you touch him sober." Jory didn't know what it was like, and Markise only knew because of Ariel. Did she really not know that much about drugs? If she thought that waiting would make this go away, she was very sadly mistaken.

Jory watched the two from the other side of the hall, hoping he was hidden enough that they wouldn't notice him right away. Just maybe he felt a bit of satisfaction at hearing that letting Lyric do....was he really doing drugs? wouldn't help him. If he felt satisfaction, it was quickly dampened by focusing on the rest of what Ariel had said. He hoped Ariel was exaggerating, but he couldn't think of a reason he would be.

It couldn't possibly be that bad not when Quinn had seen first hand what the things in his box could give. "Why would they send him to the hospital, why would they be dangerous? All they do is help you forget. Sometimes you need to forget. There can't be anything wrong with it." She didn't know who she was trying to convince, but it had made her happy, it had been fun, allowed her close to Lyric. She didn't want to think she was hurting him. Her hand covered the tiny marble that was now mounted on a string, the gift he had given to her. Even as she shook her head in denial, the tiny marble bounced out to lay against the front of her shirt.

Did he really have to explain to her how this worked? "Drugs take over, they mess with your brain to make you feel good, and when you do them for a long time, well, sometimes it only takes once, but you get hooked. It'll mess you up, according to what you do. Coke will wear your nose away, heroin messes up your veins. All of it messes up your brain, a lot of it messes with your weight. Then when you go off of it you get really sick, it's hell." Ariel hoped that she would listen, maybe she could stop Lyric. Then he wouldn't have to worry about running into Lyric again and he could feel like he had helped.

Jory was thinking more and more that Lyric probably had never been drunk, that he had started drugs. Was it his fault? No, it couldn't be his fault, he hadn't made Lyric go do anything. He didn't want to imagine all of that stuff happening to Lyric. He looked over at Quinn from Ariel, wondering that she didn't believe him. No, he didn't like to think about things that bad actually happening, but he was learning that things did happen, whether he wanted to admit it or not. His eyes barely caught the newly revealed necklace and it took another look to feel any recognition for the little colored glass ball against her chest.

None of that sounded good, none of it sounded healthy, and after rescuing Lyric from the top of the tower the other day, it scared her that his nose might fall off. Quinn still didn't want to acknowledge it though, it didn't make sense, Lyric had given her things and she didn't need them. "Lyric just told me, they make you forget. He's given them to me a couple of times, and I don't need them, I don't want them." She had no way of knowing that the level of drugs he had been giving her was baby versions, but there was a hint of desperation in her voice, wanting to believe that she hadn't been encouraging something bad for Lyric.

"Well he does," Ariel said. "By the time I started shaking as bad as he was I was smoking at least a pack a day to get the edge off, and that wasn't enough." He didn't know if he had ever shook as bad as Lyric had been, but he wouldn't be surprised to be told he had been like that. He remembered barely making it to the weekends and having something on Wednesdays to help just a little.

The marble was momentarily forgotten. "Is he gonna be okay?" Jory asked from his place. He shouldn't care, but he did, he wanted Lyric to be okay just as much as he had before. He didn't understand any more than he had before, though he knew more about drugs. Drugs were something he had heard about and knew a little about from books of seers that had dabbled, but he had never heard of someone as bad as Lyric apparently was.

Quinn's head turned at Jory's voice, the little marble dancing against her collar. "Of course he's going to be all right. I didn't take him off of the tower to have him not be all right." She felt protective, and defensive of Lyric, somehow it was going to be alright. A pack of cigarettes a day to keep the edge of sounded bad, but he was still functioning, he could still be okay right. She looked back at the other boy....Ariel, "what does it mean? Him being that bad?" Did it mean that he was hurting himself that much? Did he not want to experience life without those drugs.
Was he always on them? She had thought maybe it was just when they were together, or situations like that. Quinn felt resentful of Jory for intruding. He didn't understand enough about Lyric to know why forgetting was necessary sometimes. Didn't understand that Lyric was hurting. But did she know how to make it stop? The hurt? She would make it stop, she wasn't going to let him just jump off of another tower, even if it was one where drugs were the tower instead.

"I was in the hospital for weeks when I went off drugs," Ariel said, shifting so that he didn't have to turn to look at Jory. "And I wasn't sneaking off to the Shack to get a hit and carrying around a box of stuff. He...you guys," he corrected, looking between the two. "All three of you need to be careful." He didn't know what Jory's relationship to Lyric was right now, but it was better to go ahead and say it.

Jory shot a glance over at Quinn, though he focused on Ariel. "I haven't even seen him in forever." He hoped that Lyric would be okay and that he wouldn't have to worry about something really bad happening. The marble on the string came into his mind, floating in the front. If Quinn had it now, then maybe he didn't even have any business knowing what was going on with Lyric.

Quinn was quiet a moment, "is he dying?" She had known as Lyric stood on the tower that she couldn't watch him throw his life away, couldn't watch someone else that she cared about die in front of her. She couldn't watch it happen, she would stop it. "If he's hurting himself that bad, then I will not play it safe. I will do whatever it takes to get him down." She wasn't giving up, something in her was digging into Lyric and not letting him go over that ledge.

"He's....in trouble, just be careful. He won't listen if you try to get him to stop." Ariel knew that much, it was hard to get someone to stop, it was probably harder to convince someone they needed to than it was to actually stop. He had only messed up once for serious drugs, and had only smoked a couple of times.
