Johnny stood at the edge of the frozen lake, looking out across it into the forbidden forest, and shuffling her feet to get a bit warmed up. It was her first day at Hogwarts, and she couldn't bring herself to face her new reality. She didn't want to transfer to a new school, no matter how famous it was, she wanted to stay where she was, with her friends. But her headmaster, old headmaster, and her dads thought it was for the best. "A new environment, new people. It'll do you good" that's what they all kept saying. "And it's a lot closer to home. You'll be able to come home on the holidays"
'God!" Johnny exhaled in frustration , reWizarding their words. It was so unfair she was being punished like this. It was all just a misunderstanding after all. But none of them would listen And now she had to start all over. In a school that felt so strange, with people she didn't know...

Ariel couldn't believe it was cold enough to have frozen the lake. He hated it. He hated the weather. And he certainly hated the fact that his only chance of surviving long enough to have a smoke was the coat Markise had made for him. That last he had pushed away when he had walked outside to be instantly chilled to the bone.
"Ah damn," he muttered around the cig in his mouth as he dug around in his coat pockets, then his pants pockets, then his cloak, then started all over again. He was about to give up and go back to the castle when he noticed someone by the lake. He sighed heavily, letting a cloud of fog leave his mouth from the cold. He supposed it was worth a try. "You wouldn't have a light, would you?" he asked as he walked up to her.

At the sound of approaching footsteps Johnny turned around to see a boy walking toward her. She sighed deeply, Okay, here it comes...New life.
She was about to put on a brave smile and say hi when the boy spoke first, uttering words she did not expect to be coming out of a student of this school. "what?" she looked at the cigarette poking out of his mouth "You're allowed to smoke here?"

"Like I care if we are or not," Ariel said, his Australian accent muffled and made slightly less clear from the cig in his mouth. He continued searching his pockets, "I could have sworn I grabbed it...." He couldn't believe he left his matches in the tower, there was no way, he remembered putting them in his pocket! "Do you have one or not?"

"er..." She put her sore and cold hand into her pocket, and after rummaging in it produced a lighter. Which she handed over "Here".
Watching him take it she thought of what her dads would say if they knew that the school they sent her to, to adjust her attitude was turning out to be just the sort of thing they wanted to get her away from. she let out a small laugh.

Ariel took the lighter with a low thanks and cupped his hand around his mouth to light it. He took a long drag, then sighed out the smoke in content as it warmed him slightly. "Want one?" he asked as he handed the lighter back and stared out over the frozen water. He had never imagined he would ever see so much ice.

"oh, no thanks" she took back the lighter, brushing his cold hand. "I don't smoke. It's just for...warmth" she shrugged embarrassingly, putting it back into her coat pocket. She took it out with her, thinking if she got cold she could use it for warmth. But it wasn't strong enough to produce any heat. Which was no wonder.
"so," she watched as he took another drag, "Do many people here smoke?"

Ariel shrugged and took another drag. "I don't know, I don't know many people here," he said with a light cough which was more from the cool air than from the stick between his fingers. "I've not seen anyone smoking," he said, ignoring the chill that was fighting back the warmth from the cig and turning his face to frozen stone.

"Oh, alright". She had to smile. It was the school her dads thought it was. She was just hoping so much for something to work out to her advantage. "I'm Johnny, btw" she said, looking out across the lake again.

Ariel snorted, "Interesting name for a girl," he pointed out, only to tug down the corners of his lips and take a drag off his cig as he realized the hypocrisy of that statement. "I'm Logan," he said, purposefully using his middle name in favor of his less-fitting first. He glanced over, just to be sure it was a girl he was talking to, then shrugged with his far shoulder and looked back out over what should have been the water.

"Thanks" she said proudly. Cause she loved that her name was a boys name. She loved it; despite the fact that when people found out that her parents were a gay couple they always said something like "oh, is that why they gave you a boys name?". It was unique.
"Logan," she said after a minutes pause "how cold are you right now?"

"You go live in Australia for sixteen and a half years and come to winter in effing Scotland and see how you feel," Ariel said bitterly. "I'm effing freezing." And he had been freezing for nearly two months. And it was supposed to get even colder if what Brindle said was true. Was it even possible to get colder? Maybe he needed to ask his brother for another couple of packs.

"Well, I have the perfect solution, if you're interested" She put her hand on his shoulder and moved around to face him. With her other hand she removed his hand, and the f*g from his mouth, waited for him to blow out the smoke and pressed her lips against his.

Ariel kept himself from wrinkling his nose, but only just, he was out of practice. He knew well enough that it wouldn't be a good idea to pull away from her without at least returning it, so he put his free arm lightly around her and thought of his poster and that little brunette from the club. He knew he could be convincing when kissing a girl, it was only a matter of concentration. Johnny didn't have to know that he was thinking about someone from an entirely different gender.

Johnny wrapped both her arms around him when he didn't withdrew. His mouth felt very much like the inside of a vacuum cleaner, but it wasn't the first time she'd kissed a smoker. And you got used to it after a while.
