"Mm," Markise hummed, letting Ariel know he was listening when he couldn't think of what to say. He wondered if Ariel had any kind of emotional attachment to the people he'd hung out with. Did Ariel let himself get close enough to people to feel anything for them? What about you? Markise wondered. Ariel felt jealousy, annoyance, desire, that much he knew. But was Ariel capable of more? And why was Markise thinking that far when he wasn't sure how he felt about Ariel?

Ariel barely noticed the absence of speech on Markise's side, falling comfortably into silence as he was filled with memories from long day s spent on the beach and nights spent in motel rooms. "It's going to be weird not going there this New Year's," he commented, mostly to himself. It was one of the things he just hadn't thought about, and he almost wished he hadn't thought about it.

"We do have winter break," Markise said. "You won't be going home for it?" Ariel didn't seem to have any tender feelings for his brother, but Markise knew little about the man other than that he was a tattoo fanatic and a major homophobe. Markise had always gone home for the holidays. Would he this year, though? He didn't know if his family could afford international travel, especially for both him and Brindle.

Ariel shrugged, "Probably not." Besides, his brother was only in London, and there was no way that Ariel would be able to go down to Australia just for that. He highly doubted that his brother was even going to go. "There isn't any reason for me to go home for the break, anyway." He wouldn't be getting anything from it, and he didn't care to see Maverick.

"Hm, the more I think about it, I'll probably be staying too," Markise said. His brows knitted at the thought, and he was glad that Ariel couldn't see his face. He didn't want to lay around lamenting over not seeing his parents, especially when Ariel didn't have any to go home to. Still, it bothered him, and so Markise went silent thinking about it. His first Christmas at school. The thought that Ariel would be here was small consolation when pitted against every other Christmas of his life.

Ariel had never gone home, their school had been pretty much constant to get everything out of the way. Christmas was during summer break, they didn't have to have an extra one in the middle for it. "Is it going to be snowing on Christmas?" he asked, the thought suddenly hitting him. It was such a strange thought to even be cold on Christmas, much less snowing.

"It might," Markise said. "It just depends what the weather feels like." He didn't know how winter in England compared to winter in New York anyway. "You've got gloves and a hat, though, so you ought to be fine. And a scarf. You won't need all that yet, but you've got them in case it gets cold." It was still nice outside, in Markise's opinion. He hadn't even bothered digging out his hat or winter gloves yet.

Ariel raised an eyebrow as he tried to imagine a cold Christmas, it just didn't make a lot of sense to him. Not that he didn't understand how it happened, but he was so very used to it being in the middle of summer that he couldn't get his mind around it. "That's so...weird," he said softly. "Not the gloves or anything, the Christmas thing," he added, just in case.

Markise moved his head against Ariel's shoulder to look up at him. Ariel's disclaimer had come so quickly on the heels of his spoken thought that Markise hadn't had time to misinterpret. "What about Christmas? The snow?" Markise asked. It hadn't occurred to him that the seasons were opposite, and so his immediate connection was with the temperature, since that was what Ariel had complained about most. That and not swimming.

"It's in winter," Ariel said, putting his arm behind his head to tilt it up enough to look down at Markise. "I mean, it's in the middle of the school year, it's so weird. I'm used to going around in shorts and bare feet for Christmas." And that was it, it was all that he could stand, even if he did end up with a sunburn half the time because of it. His eyebrows creased and he tilted his head again, wondering at how it was different everywhere else in the world.

It took a moment, but Ariel's words finally clicked and Markise let out a low Oh of understanding. "That would be weird," he said. It was impossible for Markise to imagine Christmas without snow. Snow was in at least half the decorations and most of the songs. Kids made snowflakes in school. "Well I'll cross my fingers for a white Christmas," Markise said. "If the world's going to be on its ass for you it may as well be fun."

"No, I need a gradual change," Ariel argued back. "You don't think I've had enough change already?" Schools, countries, seasons, even the basic things that he accepted about himself. Everything had been uprooted and turned around, and the one thing he loved taken away from him. He didn't know if he could handle too much more in the way of change. Maybe he would get lucky and there would be some bizarre heat streak in December.

Markise was silent at that. It would snow at some point in the winter, and Markise had been thinking of the soothing beauty, and the fun of running around in it, having snow fights until you had to go in because your fingers were numb. He could see Ariel's point, though. He'd already undergone massive change in only a few short weeks, and the culture shock was even worse for him than for Markise.
Markise raised his hand from Ariel's chest and smoothed it lightly against the hard line of his jaw. His fingers swept back into brown-gold hair and he stretched up just a bit, bringing his lips to Ariel's. He didn't want Ariel to give up on Hogwarts. Not when he'd just found him.

Ariel sighed softly and accepted the kiss in place of brooding about how much everything had changed. He hated being thrown into a new place, even if he didn't have to deal with whispers or funny looks anymore. He tightened his arm around Markise as he returned the kiss and his mind slowly moved away from his thoughts of all of the changes.

Markise was perfectly content to continue as they'd begun. He and Ariel had talked long enough to recover, and now it was time to go again. Eventually, as Markise lay lazy and sated against Ariel, he realized how late it must have gotten when his lips parted in a wide yawn. "We should go," he said, the words barely intelligible for a moment. Not that Markise cared much about curfew, but he'd been hoping to catch up on his sleep a bit before Friday. He tended to get loopy if he went too long without it. Still, Markise couldn't quite gather the energy to move. He closed his eyes and sighed in comfort.
