Even with that Ariel still had the feeling he would end up dancing, even if he really didn't want to, it just wasn't his thing. "Will you dance with someone else?" he asked, staring up at the ceiling. He didn't want Markise to see the jealousy that flashed through his eyes at the idea. Markise had a good enough idea about it that he could probably already guess, but that didn't mean that Ariel wanted the proof to show in his eyes.

"Markise wouldn't lie, even if he could guess at the reasoning behind Ariel's question. "If you'll let me," he said. He wanted to dance, and he'd dance with about anyone who asked him, but if Ariel said no, then he wouldn't do it. He'd just pour all his energy into making Ariel dance instead. "I'm going to have to dance with someone. But don't worry about it, I've never been as easy as I am for you."

Ariel's nose wrinkled again. He couldn't truly believe what Markise said about not being easy for others, but he really didn't want to dance, especially around so many other people. He was going to the club, anyway, Markise should just be glad for that, not trying to get more out of him. But Ariel didn't say as much, and instead went quiet as he thought about it. He hoped his brother didn't talk to anyone that went to that club.

Markise didn't want to talk about it too much, either. He knew how that tended to work out and was perfectly happy to stop before Ariel's brooding turned into pissiness. Markise didn't spare another thought for his statement about not being that easy. In his mind he wasn't. He'd only ever been this far before with a boyfriend, and a long-term one at that, despite the amount of time they'd actually spent together. The only other time he'd done more than kiss was... Beside the point. Markise didn't think about that. "Wear your cloak over your coat," he said instead. "We can meet at the gates at seven-thirty." Sunset was early enough now that they could get away with it.

Ariel nodded, at the gates at seven thirty on Friday. He pressed that into his mind and then nodded again once he was sure he had it in his memory. "Do you go to clubs a lot?" he asked, surprising even himself at asking it. He mentally shrugged it off, though, and swept his hand over Markise's back as he waited for an answer. He had the impression that Markise did, but maybe there were other things to do back where he was from.

"Whenever I can," Markise admitted. "There was an all-ages club in California and a few clubs in New York that I went to with friends." Markise licked his lips as he tried to decide whether to mention his foray into the gay club scene, but finally decided against it. If Ariel wanted that much detail, he could ask for it. "We didn't go as much as I do now, but some of the cover charges were pretty high, and there was other stuff to do anyway."

Ariel tried to imagine a place that had other things to do, and it was fairly hard, considering that there hadn't been a town associated with his school and hadn't been able to go to the nearest town very often. "I don't think there were any clubs near my school, I know there were bars that my brother and his friends would go to," he said, thinking back. They had been to those bars whenever they had the spare money.

Markise wrinkled his nose at that. "I've definitely never been to a bar," he said. "I can pass for eighteen once I'm in a club, but I doubt I could pull of 21." Even if he didn't shave his face for a month he didn't stand a chance. "What about you? Is school the most interesting place you've been?" Markise couldn't imagine it, but considering what Ariel had told him about the Outback, where would anything have been?

Ariel shook his head, "No, Maverick went to this body modification thing every summer around New Year's at the beach. He started taking me..." He tried to figure it out, because his brother hadn't started going instantly, he went one summer for a couple of months to get his training and then stayed home for a couple of years. "About five years ago." Ariel had always looked forward to it, it was really the only time he went any significant distance from home or school.

Markise's mind had stuck at the phrase body modification just long enough to miss summer around New Year's or he might have commented. Rather, he let himself enjoy the knowledge that Ariel had had something other than misery in his life. "Tell me about it," Markise prompted. He could figure out what body modification was with little trouble, but what was a body modification thing? Training? Did Ariel know how to tattoo?

"There's not much to tell," Ariel said, shrugging lightly. "We would stay in this little motel in a wizarding section of town and he would go to the center during the day. I went there with him once, it was full of tattooers and people with so much jewellery in their faces you couldn't believe they could talk. Other than that time, though, I stayed on the beach. There was a group of us that would meet up and go out, one of the guys taught me to surf." For just a moment he felt a small wave of sadness that he wouldn't be able to go and meet up with the gang on New Year's.

"Ooh, I can see you surfing," Markise said, pleased with the image that gave him. Of course, he'd loved watching Ariel swim too, so it made sense. Markise spread his fingers over Ariel's chest, thoroughly enjoying this. "I've been to the beach enough, but never surfing," he said. "I'm sure I'd fall off and drown anyway." He wondered if people could surf two to a board though, and decided that since he was just imagining anyway that it was perfectly possible.

"I would say you should try it anyway but I don't want to have to dive in after you every five minutes," Ariel said, the light hint of a tease in his voice. He didn't really see why Markise wouldn't be able to surf, it was all a matter of balance. "The first time I ever actually rode a wave I fell off and hit my shoulder on a rock," he said. "Josh had to dive in after me."

Markise had chuckled at Ariel's tease; he didn't think Ariel minded rescuing him quite as much as he said he did. He winced at imagining Ariel's injury though, and made a low sound of commiseration that didn't last long. "Who's Josh?" he asked. He wasn't jealous of a name, especially considering the guy had to have been straight. He was just curious about Ariel's friends.

"Josh is like, the leader of the group. About a year older than me, he's the one that taught me how to surf. He lives near Sydney." Ariel found himself wishing he was going there on New Year's, that he would get to see the group again, the only people he actually was able to fit in around. His mind went over each of the guys in the group, none of which had a very stable home life or pleasant time at school. They helped each other along.
