"Why?" Chase asked. He didn't like her pulling away, didn't like the distance she was putting between them, and he closed it again, slipping his arms around her waist. "I told you, I don't want you to go." Chase brought his lips to Dru's neck, falling back on distraction when it seemed that he was unable to give her what she wanted verbally.

Dru wished Chase had just let her go, because it was so hard for her to pull away from him when he kissed her. She turned away from him, trying to break the contact of his lips and her neck, "I need to get to the club." Her eyes avoided his direction, knowing that he would see the lie. It was such a convenient thing to say, though, and she needed to be away from him, wanted to go hide away in the common room to try to think.

It was such a flimsy excuse that Chase didn't need to see Dru's eyes to recognize it. His jaw tightened, biting back the desire to call her a liar, and with great effort, he loosened his arms. He didn't look at Dru, but stood up, found his trousers, and pulled them on, tugging the zipper sharply. It was less about the words than about the moment she'd turned away from his kiss, though the combination was unmistakeable. He wondered if he'd been wrong after all, if it was only the physical that kept her coming back.

Dru chewed roughly on her lip, wanting so very badly to go to him and say she was sorry, to wrap her arms around him and beg him to forget their conversation. She stood, her legs shaking the smallest amount with the stress and uncertainty, to find her clothes. For the first time since they had first gotten together she felt self-conscious, and faced away from him as she dressed.

Chase watched Dru from the corner of his eye as he crossed toward the fire, then stood in front of it, trying to let the dancing flames mesmerize him. They reflected in his eyes, swirling reds and oranges that wouldn't stop any more than the thoughts so heavy in his mind. He wanted to demand that she stay with him, but he knew he couldn't. He'd been trying all this time, hadn't he? He was beginning to think everything he'd done wasn't enough, even as close as he'd felt that he was getting.

Dru only looked up at him once she was fully dressed again and had run her hand through her hair. She wished he could understand, even if she didn't really even understand it herself. She searched for her forgotten book, lost somewhere by the door, then stood, her eyes on the cover as her fingers ran lightly over the picture and slightly raised letters. Her heart was in her throat, keeping her from opening the door and leaving, however much she needed to.

He'd expected to hear the door open by now, but somehow, it hadn't. He waited, tensing, but finally lifted his head, then looked over his shoulder to see Dru looking as lost as he felt. He watched her a moment, then turned back to the fire, giving himself the distance he needed to speak. "It's not over, is it?" They hadn't come to any conclusions, but it felt like, if it wasn't over yet, she was pulling away, trying to end it.

It was so tempting to say something along the lines of there's nothing to end, but Dru bit her lip hard to stop herself. However satisfying it could have been to say it, it wasn't worth it, so she paused before speaking. "No," she said softly, shaking her head. That wasn't saying she would be able to go back to him, or that it would last much longer, but she couldn't tell him that it was over, whatever it was. She watched him for a moment longer before pulling open the door and slipping out.

That one word was small relief. Chase hung his head, breathing slowly to calm the wall of emotion that threatened, then all at once his arm struck out, and everything on the mantlepiece was swept to the floor with a crash. Chase turned, trying not to think about it as he gathered the rest of his clothes and dressed, every motion perhaps a bit harsher than he'd meant it.
He'd been working for months now trying to make himself what he thought Dru wanted, or at least something closer, and she was only more distant than she'd been since she'd found out about Storm. It was already like being in a relationship again, only he didn't know where Dru stood. The knowledge that he could slip and kiss other girls and be excused was poor consolation. When he'd dressed, Chase didn't spare a glance for the room, but left for anywhere else. The door slammed shut in his wake, and the room vanished.
