Their location meant precisely nothing to Neo. He knew what would happen if they were found. At worst, they'd get a stern warning, but most likely, anyone who came this far was looking for their own privacy and would retreat as soundlessly as possible. Which left Neo all the time in the world to just kiss her, to enjoy the physical pleasure of it. To wonder at the rest.

Arwen let her fingers play in his hair and on his neck, let herself get lost in the kiss again. If she thought too hard then she doubted and she lost part of the pleasure, so she worked to forget, to not let even the faintest thought of a relationship enter her mind. He made her happy, when they were together, and she would have to make herself content with that.

He couldn't imagine there was anything besides this. There was nothing else for her, no one else. She couldn't give herself, lose herself so completely otherwise. It was different for him. Whatever connection they had was just from having known each other for so long; it was almost a year now, wasn't it? And his jealousy, that odd possessive feeling, was just a reflex, nothing more. Except that she was his. At least while they were together.

Yes, when they were together. It was like she entered an entirely different world when she was with him. Nothing outside of the two of them mattered, it was as though time was suspended, waiting on them to part and go back out into the real world. For the time being, Arwen let herself pretend that everything would work out just right. She let her hands drop and trail down his sides, no longer even remembering that they were, technically, out in public.

The cool night air on Neo's skin began to pull him back to consciousness, away from her and the distraction she provided. He let himself be distracted from her, slowed the kiss and finally broke away, though his eyes shone in the dark as he looked at her. One tense moment, one stark truth begged for notice, and then he turned away, handed Arwen her things as he gathered his own to dress.

Arwen hated the single tense moment and what it had led to, even though it had probably been inevitable. She looked away from him to get dressed, smoothing down her dress and hair, running her fingers through it to make sure no grass had gotten in it. Her heart was still beating madly and her skin was still flushed, even so, she felt cold with the absence of his body on hers.

Neo dressed and put his clothes to rights, then moved to run his fingers through his hair, only recalling as he did so how short it was. The night began to filter through his mind, and he looked around the small clearing they were in, finally turning his attention back to Arwen. "Where are my glasses?" he asked. It should have been a simple question, but something about it felt vulnerable, and he despised himself for it.

Arwen looked at him, but it took a moment for his question to click in her mind, usually it was her looking for glasses. "I don't..." she trailed off, looking around on the ground to see if she could find them. After a few moments she caught sight of them, at the edge of the clearing. She went over and picked them up, walking over to him and sliding them on for him. The smile that came over her face was kept small by the unsure feeling that was always present.

The glasses sliding into place felt like the lowering of a shield over his thoughts. Not that he intended to lie, but knowing he could, knowing that for once it wouldn't be so easy for her to tell what he was thinking, was a relief. "Thank you," he said. His eyes dropped to Arwen's lips, to the hint of a smile flirting against them. "What is it?" he asked, interested.

Arwen looked up into her reflection on his glasses and smiled wider, "Nothing, I just have to smile when I'm with you." It wasn't the truth, but it wasn't a lie, either. Yes, she did smile when she was with him, but she couldn't tell him that she still thought of a relationship, or that kissing the pirate had made her wonder more than usual if it was worth missing out on other guys to be with him on the chance that they might work out.

Neo wasn't at all sure he believed her, but he had no choice other than to accept her words, outwardly at least. He looked at her a moment, wondering at whatever it was she wasn't saying, but unwilling to ask. If she didn't want to tell him, he probably didn't want to know. He nodded, then slipped his arm around her waist and gestured back toward the path. "I've been looking for you," he admitted. It was the least of the things he'd been thinking, and the easiest to say.

Arwen tucked her arm under his and around his waist to walk with him, holding back a sigh of relief that he hadn't questioned her. "You have?" She looked up at him, a silent thrill going through her at the knowledge that she was sure showed in her eyes, though it was tempered by the fact that she hadn't been looking for him. "How did you expect to find me if you didn't know what I was wearing?" she asked, her voice full of humor.

Neo arched a brow at her, though with his eyes shielded, the full impact of the look was likely lost. You don't want to know, the look said. "I had a couple dances. Left once I'd figured out who they were." That was enough of the truth to count. And he'd picked up on the fact that she hadn't been looking for him as clearly as if she'd said it. Her silence was more than enough affirmation. Neo fell silent a moment, wondering what conclusions she'd come to, considering what he'd told her. Would he need to go on? Would she ask? He wasn't sure which he wanted.

Arwen looked away, biting her lip. She felt bad that it was so obvious she hadn't been looking for him, but honestly she had wanted to forget the entire situation, if only for the night. She knew that he hadn't just danced with people, neither had she, she was in no position to pass judgment on him. "What if I had decided I didn't want to come?" she asked, for lack of anything to say.

"Then I would have kept looking." It was that simple. He'd have spent the night dancing with one girl after another, trying to figure out who they were, then walking away. "Nothing more than a kiss," Neo said, wondering if she'd know what he was talking about. He hadn't intended for the kiss. It had just happened, and he'd been unable to resist it. But the way he said it, and the way he meant it, was that the kiss had been part of his looking for her, nothing meaningful. Nothing like what they had.
