What was he supposed to say to that? Did she expect him to argue? "I'm not the emotional type," he said. Chase glanced away, frustrated, but he knew that wasn't anything like what Dru wanted to hear, so he brought his gaze back to hers and tried again. "What do you want from me, Dru? It's not like you ever tell me what you want. When we're not going at it you treat me like some naughty schoolboy you've got to scold and put in place. I don't even know what the hell I'm supposed to be getting out of this besides sex, and it's not like we're doing it that much anyway. What do you want?"

"I want to know you! We had no problems talking before all of this." This meaning Storm, Emilian, everything that had pulled them apart. "I've tried to talk before, pathetic attempts, yes, but then you kiss me and I can't think straight." The way he spoke about the relationship sounded to Dru like he wasn't exactly enjoying it either. She looked up into his eyes, her own full for the first time with emotion. She wanted that connection, but she had no idea how to go about getting it.

"At least I'm doing something right," Chase murmured. He thought about kissing her then, about ending the argument, the discomfort, whatever it was, but he stopped at the look in Dru's eyes. "I don't know what else to do, Dru." The only comfort he knew how to give would bring them right back to the physical.

"Like I do? If you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly the relationship guru. I'm an idiot when it comes to these things. If I knew what I was doing, I wouldn't have been left out to dry by so many guys, I wouldn't have dated a death eater. I'd be happy," Dru finished softly and ran a shaky hand through her hair, her movements had been shaky ever since the forest. She wanted it to work, wanted it so badly, but she was at a loss.

She wasn't happy either. "Then maybe this was a bad idea," Chase said, though something told him he was an idiot for letting the words pass his lips. "I'm following your lead, you don't know what we're supposed to be doing, and neither of us is happy." Was it worth it to her for the sex? For the potential they still hadn't reached?

Dru's eyes darted around Chase's face, trying to find some way to make it work. Her mouth opened to say something, but no sound would come. She took a deep breath and focused on keeping her voice level. "I want to be with you," she said softly, even though it didn't help matters. "Maybe you're right," she said, her lips barely moving. The words hurt, and she looked away from him so he wouldn't see the pain in her expression.

Maybe he was right. Chase looked at Dru, at her eyes turned away from him, the raw skin of her lower lip. This wasn't going well for either of them. "I want to be with you too or I wouldn't have stuck around this long, but we both want...I don't know, something we're not getting." All this felt inevitable, but it still felt wrong after all the time they'd just been in denial.

Dru slid down and sat on the steps, her head in her hands. She didn't want to stop seeing him, the memory of how he could make her feel making it so much harder. "Should we stop, or should we keep trying?" Was it worth it? Would staying together and trying to work it out be worth the heartache that Dru knew would come with it?

Chase paused, then turned to sit next to Dru, rather than tower over her. "I don't know," he said, but he did know. They were making themselves and each other miserable. "Maybe we ought to just take a break." Maybe he stood a chance of seeing her again if he didn't call it breaking up for her.

Dru had been so stupid to think that they would make it, even if the urge to kiss him and forget it all was close to unbearable. "Yeah, I guess that'd be best," she said, the words muffled by her hands. It felt like if they walked away from each other, then that would be it, and that idea scared Dru more than anything.

Chase's muscles tensed and bunched for one long moment before he gave up his inner battle and wrapped his arms around Dru. It was the only way he knew to comfort her, and she needed comforting, even if he knew it was defeating the purpose for him to comfort her. "We'll be fine, Dru. You'll be fine. You'll go on, remember?"

Dru tensed and then relaxed against his shoulder. "It took meeting you for me to finally get over Michael...." What would it take for her to get over Chase? It wasn't the first time she had gotten comfort from him when he was probably not the best one to do it, so it was only slightly awkward. "What about you?" He seemed to be taking it much better than she was. She refused to think that he would just go outside and find a new girl to use to more on.

Chase shrugged. It wasn't real for him yet. It was happening, but he'd wait until she was gone to decide how he felt about everything. "I'll figure it out," he said. He wouldn't be jumping into monogamy again any time soon, that much he knew. Chase leaned his head against the top of Dru's, glad that he could do something useful.

"You'll be perfectly alright," Dru said, knowing it to be the truth. He would bounce back and she'd see him in the Club dancing with someone. Her chest constricted and she wiped at her eyes, they were burning and it was only a matter of time before the tears fell. She didn't want to be with Chase when they came, but she wasn't quite ready to pull away.

Chase could feel the tension in Dru's body, even if she was trying to hold back. "You'll be fine," he said again. He wished he could think of something else to say. He wished he could think of something besides one last kiss, but wisdom failed him, and he pressed his lips to Dru's temple, to her forehead, her cheek. One last kiss and he'd let her go.
