Vannah crept down to the Hospital Wing. It was pretty late and she knew the nurse would probably already be passed out from her late night sherry. She hadn't been in to visit Chase or Emilian yet. In fact, she had no intention of visiting them in the Hospital Wing ever. Things weren't exactly left smooth between either of them.
It was only when she had heard some girls in her Common Room talking about it earlier. Curiosity got the best of her and before she knew it, she was standing outside of the huge doors that led to the Hospital Wing.
Vannah opened the doors cautiously, not wanting them to creak and alert the nurse someone was there. She squeezed through the tiny slot with ease and silently shut the door behind her. A few beds were filled, but she could see the outline of Chase's face on one side of the room and Emilian's on the other. Vannah sighed lightly and walked over to Chase's bed. She thought it would probably be easier to talk to someone who's every move toward her scared the shi--or crap out of her.
He was sleeping, or so it appeared, Vannah saw. She passed her bed and walked a foot away from it to look out the window. The moonlight filled up the sky and the stars were barely visible. It was rare for Vannah to notice the night sky, but it looked awe-ful tonight. Her hand brushed against the nightstand next to his bed accidentally and a small plastic bottle fell to the floor with a medium-sounding clunk! and Vannah muttered cursing under her breath

Chase had been sleeping lightly as it was, and the sudden sharp noise was more than enough to wake him up. He opened his eyes and looked around, his eyes stopping at the vision standing in the watery moonlight filtering through the windows. Her pale skin and white-blond hair gleamed, giving her the momentary appearance of an angel. Momentary because after only a heartbeat, he'd recognized her. Vannah. "What are you doing here?" Chase hissed, trying to keep it down for anyone who'd slept through whatever noise had woken him.

Vannah picked up the bottle and set it on the nightstand. A pale pink crept up the side of her neck, hardly noticeable. She mumbled an apology that was barely audible. She turned around so she was facing his bed, but still stood a few feet away. Vannah glanced around at the other beds to see if anyone else had been bothered by the sound. They all seemed to be unaware of the noise.
"What are you doing here?" Vannah hesitated for a moment. The question slightly surprised her, but she responded in a whispering tone that matched his. "I could ask you the same thing." She snapped not quite sure of how else to respond. She crossed her arms over her chest. She had heard rumors of how they had ended up on here, but every story was different and she didn't know what to believe.

"You could, but I thought everyone already knew." Chase looked at Vannah, noticing not for the first time how attractive she was. It had all come down to a clash of wills, though. "You didn't answer my question," Chase murmured. "What are you doing here?" He wouldn't ask why she was here so late; she probably didn't want to be seen. "Miss me? Or maybe you're planning to murder Emilian in his sleep, in which case let me know and I'll go back to sleep." His lips quirked at the thought.

Vannah smirked at his comment. Of course, it was only to be expected coming from him. "You could, but I thought everyone already knew." "It's so hard to keep the stories straight now, you see. I passed a third year on the way here that swore she was the cause of the fight. " Vannah replied with a small laugh to indicate she was joking. "You didn't answer my question, What are you doing here?" "I only came to make sure it wasn't true." She said shrugging. It was a lie, that was easy to see. She was curious to see how he was. It had been months since she had spoken to him, and she did kind of a miss him. That much she admitted to herself before reminding herself, only a little bit.
...Or maybe you're planning to murder Emilian in his sleep, in which case let me know and I'll go back to sleep." His lips quirked at the thought. Vannah grinned at his eagerness. "Surprisingly enough, there's someone else higher up on my murder list." She said it as a joke, but to her it almost seemed like a nice possibility.

Chase's brows arched. "Well I know it can't be me. You're just not the jealous type, kitten. We've both moved on." It was surreal talking to her. Talking, as opposed to verbally tearing each other in half, which he knew was half due to sexual tension. What he wondered was why she was playing along. "But since you mentioned it, there were no third-years involved. I attacked Emilian, he fought back, and here we are."

"Well I know it can't be me. You're just not the jealous type, kitten. We've both moved on." Vannah picked up the plastic bottle that had fallen on the ground earlier and threw it at him. "Obviously it's not you." She rolled her eyes. "Gyffindork. Fourth year, I think. She's been in here quite a few times." As Vannah said the last sentence, a strange hint of pleasure poured through her voice.
"...I attacked Emilian, he fought back, and here we are." "You're both bloody idiots." Vannah said grimacing. It must've gotten pretty intense if they were both in the Hospital Wing. Her mind flickered to the conversation with Michael a few months ago and slight disappointed crossed her face briefly before it was gone. It would have been so much fun too....

Chase batted away the bottle, his wince at the movement melting quickly into an unrepentant grin. At least he knew he still affected her somehow. "You just wish you'd gotten a shot in," he said. Chase gestured toward the shapeless lump across the dark room that he knew was Emilian. "You could take it now. I won't tell." Since apparently he couldn't manage to do it himself. Chase's eyes darkened at the thought.

"You could take it now. I won't tell." Vannah followed his focus, not an easy thing to do in the dark. She scoffed. "Yeah, right. Then what? I'll end up lying in the hospital bed next to you." Vannah shook her head at the thought. "I'm not as stupid as you." Maybe that was a slight exaggeration. She had evidence from the past few days let alone the past few weeks to prove that statement wrong.
"Besides, for the most part I have moved on." Vannah hesitated a little after saying this. Moved on to what, exactly? Hating a fourth year out of jealousy? It had started out as jealousy, maybe, but now it was all about pride and revenge. Did she really move on even though she can't stand two feet near Emilian without freezing up or reliving the horrid memory?

The moonlight illuminated Vannah, making it impossible for Chase to miss the sudden tension, the look on her face. It didn't matter how many times she told him she'd moved past it, he didn't believe her now any more than he had the last time. "Bullsh~. You're afraid of a sleeping invalid, you haven't moved past it. And I don't care if it was stupid, I did something." And the world had tipped ass-up since he'd done it.

"Bullsh~. You're afraid of a sleeping invalid, you haven't moved past it." Vannah narrowed her eyes. The comment had stung. She had convinced herself different things from It wasn't rel to It's over anyways. "Shut up Chase. You don't know what you're talking about." She said in a low, angry voice.
"And I don't care if it was stupid, I did something." Vannah glared at him for a moment. "What was it that you did, exactly? Went to the Headmistress?" She asked bitterly, remembering the afternoon she had resentfully answered Hells' questions. "Got into another fight that landed you here? What good is that doing?" She spat back to him.

"I didn't make Dru go to the Headmistress," Chase snapped. "But she didn't want me to take care of things any more than you did, and if she hadn't gotten in my way..." Chase cut himself off, his jaw tightening as he broke his gaze from Vannah's. If she hadn't gotten in his way, he'd have killed Emilian, and wouldn't have gotten the chance to retreat, to change his mind. He wasn't sure whether to be glad about that or not. "He should've died," Chase said, more to himself than to Vannah.

"I didn't make Dru go to the Headmistress. But she didn't want me to take care of things any more than you did, and if she hadn't gotten in my way..." Vannah's eyes didn't moved away even though his did. She had to bite down on her lip to prevent her from shouting and waking everybody up. "It's not Dru's fault that you went looking for Emilian, anyways. If you had just listened to us in the first place..." Vannah trailed off leaving the rest of the unsaid sentence hanging in the air. She took a deep breath and attempted to calm herself down.
"He should've died," Vannah almost let the comment go, but before she had any say in the matter she blurted out "If he had died, where would that leave you? Expelled?" The thought made something in her stomach jump. Vannah turned her head away to look out the window. She stared at the moon, silencing all of the thoughts screaming at her from inside her head.

And that's why he hadn't done it the second time. That's why, with Emilian's life draining away under his hands, he'd stopped. He hadn't been able to give up everything. Chase's lips thinned a moment before he spoke. "No one was doing anything," he said quietly, levelly. "I thought it was worth giving myself up to stop it from happening again." And he'd been the only one who thought the sacrifice at all noble, at all worthy.

Vannah stared out the window silently for a while. She had nothing else to say at the moment. She turned slightly letting her eyes flicker from Emilian to Chase. It would be a miracle if either of them were allowed to stay at Hogwarts after this, but she was almost positive Emilian was a lost cause and that brought a small smile to her lips. She brought her focus back to Chase. "Do you think it was worth it now?" She asked softly.
