Chase had shifted to look at Vannah again, and it was the soft curve of her lips that stopped an immediate sharp reply. Damn her for the way the moonlight made her glow. His jaw tightened imperceptibly, and he reigned in his thoughts, gave her question a moment's attention. "I don't know," he said honestly. "It depends on what they do to him." It depends on what they do to me. "I could've killed him." He'd stopped because he'd had that very thought; was it worth it?

Vannah nodded. The smile slowly evaporated from her face. "I could've killed him." She didn't know if he really could kill. She had no idea what he was capable of doing, but it seemed like he had enough anger and motivation. "That would end it all, I guess. Until the next one comes around." Vannah lowered her head and played with the ring on her finger, something she had been given when she was young. "That's why you did it, to end it all?" She asked lifting her head slightly.

Chase watched the motion of Vannah's fingers against her ring, his gaze slipping up to her eyes at that last question. "Yes." He looked away again, his face only partially illuminated in the dark. "Can't rape anyone if he's dead." The blunt, cool way he said it was completely at odds with the way he felt, the way he had felt. "Death is too good for bastards like that," he said.

"No, he can't." Vannah said not letting her voice waver. She tried to keep her face blank of any emotion even though on the inside she wanted more than anything to get off the topic. She cleared her throat and lifted her head even more looking at him. Even though she could only see a small part of his face in the darkness, she felt something in her stomach flutter.
"So, how are you doing?" Vannah asked changing the subject slightly. He looked better than she had expected, but then again he's ahad a bit of time to recover.

Chase didn't argue with the change of subject; he didn't want to talk about it either, considering the infinite levels of misery it brought into the light for him, for both of them. And yet the new topic of conversation didn't do a hell of a lot better. "I'm healing," Chase said simply. He was still licking his wounds from having let Emilian go, not to mention how horribly wrong every visit he'd had since he'd been here had ended. Chase turned his head to look at Vannah. "What about you, how are you doing? Still Super-B*tch?" There was just enough tease in the question to avoid offense. At least, he'd meant there to be.

Vannah's mouth hung open right before her lips curved into playful grin. "Hey! Watch it!" She said with just as much tease in her voice. To prove her point she let her hand rest on a metal bowl that was filled with some sort of slimy medicinal liquid. The plastic bottle was nothing. She picked the metal bowl up and it felt heavy in her hands. She held it up as if she was going to chuck it at him.

Chase's eyes widened reflexively, a heartbeat where he almost braced himself for the impact. Then, when she didn't throw it, his lips curved. He wouldn't dare her, she might do it just to prove her point. "Are you going to rub that on my wounds?" he asked, his gaze glittering with the tease. He grinned wolfishly. "You know you can't resist." And he was back to the old game like that. But God, it was fun getting a rise out of her.

Vannah crinkled her nose in disgust. It was exactly something he would say. She set the bowl on the table as if it sudden carried an extremely dangerous disease. "You wish." She said with a laugh in her voice. Normally she would start to get defensive in response, but she figured she's let it go to decrease the potential noise level.

"Your loss," Chase said. For a second, he'd almost expected her to throw it after all. It might have been interesting, but he couldn't say he'd have enjoyed it. Chase let out a long breath. The constant tension was killing him. Always waiting for something that never happened. He wanted to prod, to get a reaction, but he knew what the usual reaction was; she'd storm off, and he'd be alone in a dark hospital again. So instead of prodding, he tried to make conversation. "So what've you been up to, Vannah? Besides sneaking in here to watch me sleep."

"It's only one time..." Vannah mumbled, barely audible. "Oh...you know...the usual..." Vannah said vaguely as she let her eyes wander around. "Maybe avoiding some people." Dragging my ex's girlfriend up here a couple of times. "Busy with schoolwork..." What schoolwork? Don't you have to go to class to have schoolwork?...Getting pissed at a club that doesn't serve alcohol. Vannah silently added her own modifications leaving her answers vague and rather uninteresting. She didn't want to talk about her much so she asked, "Gets pretty boring around here, doesn't it? Especially when he's too far away to do any damage." She said looking at the lump in Emilian's bed as it turned in its sleep.

"Hell yes," Chase agreed. "And I stopped throwing stuff at him when the nurse stopped bringing it back." Maybe the fact that it kept tearing open the wound across his abdomen had something to do with it too, but he didn't need to say that. And he wasn't stupid enough to fall for all Vannah's avoidance, but he let it go. It really wasn't worth the effort of dragging the information out of her.

Vannah scoffed. "You're throwing stuff at him? Don't you think that's a bit childish? Immature?" She asked in appalled sort of disgust. narrowed her eyes. "Don't you have your wand?" It would still be childish but at least it had a little bit of dignity...even if it were only a little bit. She tilted her head ever so slightly to the side and cocked her eyebrow.

"No," Chase snapped. "It was gone when I woke up in here. And I don't care if it was immature, it was still satisfying, and there's not a hell of a lot else that's satisfying around here." Certainly not the visits he'd gotten. So far, three out of four of the girls had kissed him, and all of them had left it at that. Chase was thoroughly annoyed, and more than a little frustrated.

"Okay, okay! Calm down!" Vannah said holding up her hands defensively. His tone took her by surprise and she had to bite down hard on her lip to keep from bursting out laughing. "No need to bite my head off..." She muttered a little more quietly this time. She sensed the agitation in his voice and then soon after realized what he had meant. She let her hands drop back down to her side.
Vannah debated whether or not to leave. She didn't exactly want to leave, but he seemed annoyed enough.

Chase only let himself fume a moment longer, then he looked Vannah over. "You know, you could make it satisfying," he suggested. She'd know exactly what he meant, and she'd turn him down. He wouldn't have made the offer if he wasn't sure of it. She'd been turning him down since about three minutes after that kiss last summer.
