She was quiet at first, mostly in shock...and then the shock turned to annoyance. "Hell. No." Vannah said shaking her head. She rolled her eyes. Vannah cross her arms over her chest. Her mind wandered to last summer, and then to every time she saw him after that. She felt stupid for her oblivion. She should've definitely seen it coming.

"Can't blame me for trying," Chase said. He wondered if she realized that the force of her arms against her chest only pushed things up, making the tops of her breasts that much more visible. He decided not to point it out. "So, kitten, if I haven't scared you off yet, you may as well sit down or something." He didn't have anything better to do. He could sleep all day tomorrow if he felt like it.

Vannah let her arms fall back down to her side. With a slight nod, she walked a few steps over to his bed. Vannah sat down so her back was leaning on the side of the bed. "How much longer are they keeping you here?" She asked. She was beginning to run out of questions.

Chase shrugged, then winced at the motion. "Until the Headmistress decides what to do with us." Which was taking forever. "I should've been out of here weeks ago." Chase fell silent. He was too spent to rage, and pissing Vannah off wasn't giving him the thrill it should have.

"Oh." That was all Vannah could manage to say. She closed her heavy eyelids as her exhaustion caught up with her. Her head rolled to the side slightly. She muttered something but it was too slurred to be recognized. Vannah's hand had rested lazily in her lap.

Chase looked at Vannah, letting the moonlight do its job illuminating her. She was worn, it was easy to see, but he didn't feel like asking her to go just yet. His hand slipped across the sheets, raising to sweep his fingers feather-light against her arm. "Why didn't we ever get anywhere, Vannah?" he asked. He wondered if she'd even thought about it. Probably not.

Vannah forced her eyes to open. She flinched slightly out of surprise at the touch, but then relaxed. She muttered something again. If you listen closely it sounded something like You don't want me. She kept blinking, hoping her eyes wouldn't feel so dry.

In the stark quiet of the hospital, Vannah's words were unmistakable. Chase paused, trying to decide if he should pretend he hadn't heard, but he wondered..."You don't want me to want you," he said, his voice low. He thought he'd made it clear that first day in the forest that he wanted her. Physically, at least. The rest was so volatile.

Maybe that part was true, too, but the truth wasn't that great. Her eyes moved over to the bed where she had dragged Gabby in only a few days ago. Her memory raced back to that day and the only thing that stood out was the anger. The anger and the hurt were unbearable. Vannah had clenched her jaw shut and tensed up without noticing. She sighed, letting all of the tension out. "I don't know what I want." She finally said in a whisper.

What was it about Vannah that attracted him? Was it the fight? Or was it the fact that he knew there was something in her besides the anger she usually showed? I don't know what I want, she'd said. Chase reached up, his fingers curving gently beneath her chin as he brought her to face him. "Then why don't you find out?" he murmured. Chase wondered vaguely if Dru would even care. They were all but over anyway, she just hadn't said the words.

Vannah brought her eyes to his. There was something inside of her screaming at her to do it. "Chase.." She said apprehensively. Every muscle in her body ached from fatigue. "I--I-" She stuttered. "No." She finally said. "Not tonight."
Vannah pushed up to a standing position. She was slightly dizzy and very tired. "I should go." She said grabbing her things next to the window.

Chase's teeth gritted briefly as he turned his head away from Vannah. "Maybe you should," he said tersely. Just to round things off, make sure every visit ended with a letdown. Chase's frustration increased by yet another notch. "Get some sleep, kitten." At least one of them ought to sleep.

Vannah turned her head to the side as if she had been slapped. Before she headed to the door, she looked at him sympathetically. "I'll see you later." She then walked out as silently as she had come in.
