On second thought.... "Other than the fact that if it hadn't happened you could have been out of here by now. Now, I'm going to tell you that if I hear that you've lied to me, omissions included," she said, staring into his eyes. "From anyone besides you, you're in deep, deep shit." Her choice of word wasn't a common one to come from her lips, but it served as a testament to how serious she was being.

It sounded like he was already in deep shit. But what was he supposed to do? If he up and confessed everything now, he'd look like a liar, and she'd probably walk right out. The other option was, of course, deciding whether he trusted Pandora and Storm; the easy answer was no. "So what do you want to know, huh? You want a play-by-play of every second I've been here? Cause if you don't, I'm going to have to leave something out."

"Oh very funny. You know what I mean. Has anyone visited?" It was a normal question, in her experience with hospitals, people liked to know who had been there. "I don't exactly take that you just up and decided to not kill Emilian when that's apparently been your goal for months." If he would just talk to her. She didn't see what the big deal was, it was just like asking someone how their day had been. Fine was a decent answer. Well I ran into ____ was even better, did he just not get it?

Chase's eyes gave him away, a flash of deep red the moment before he looked away that he knew it was too late to hide. Of all the questions she could have asked, she'd hit the worst. "Hear me out," he said, his voice low, more request than demand. "Besides you, I've gotten two visitors." Chase didn't look at Dru, needing the distance. "Pandora's been after me, but I told her to shove off." He paused, resisting the urge to flick a glance to the side, see how Dru was reacting. "Storm was here when Emilian started talking trash, but just so you know, I was thinking about you when I stopped, when I let him go." He'd been thinking about a lot of things. "Is that enough?"

Dru sighed, Pandora? She couldn't remember actually speaking to the girl, though she knew of her. And Storm. She had said she'd stay away from Chase. A flash of new anger came over Dru, but it wasn't directed at Chase, it was directed at her. "Thank you." Her voice was soft and she wondered faintly if the anger would show through. She sat down again, feeling drained, and took his hand tentatively, almost positive he'd pull away because she had forced the words from him.

Chase was surprised by the soft feel of Dru's hand. He turned his head to look at her, seeing the distance, the mixture of misery and weariness. But she hadn't walked away. She hadn't jumped to the obvious conclusions, conclusions that might have started out right, except for the fact that Storm had walked away, and he'd let her. Chase brought her hand to his lips, briefly, with no intention besides comforting her. He wondered what she was thinking, if she was letting herself imagine the worst, if she was hating him, but he didn't ask. Asking would only prod the wound.

Dru was silent for a while longer, looking away from Chase, even when she felt his lips on her hand. She was angry, yes, but it was covered by an exhaustion stemming from the stress of the past few weeks. "I want to trust you," she whispered, her lips barely moving. But how could she trust him when she had to go through all of that in order to get a straight answer from him? When there was still her?

What was he supposed to do? Beg her to trust him when he knew she saw every reason not to? Promise to change when he really hadn't done anything? "I don't know what to say, Dru." He didn't know what she wanted. Hell, he didn't know what he wanted. And he couldn't read her mind. Tell me what you want, and I'll tell you if I can do it. He thought about saying it, but couldn't. He had a feeling her demands would be beyond him.

"I know," Dru said quietly, mostly to herself, purely to avoid silence. Another question had almost come from her lips, was this a mistake? But she had stopped it because she didn't want to voice an opinion on that matter. In the beginning she would have answered no and argued her point. And now, now she wasn't so sure. Something was gone, some connection she had felt in the beginning.

And that was it. I know. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut. If it had at least been sexual tension, Chase could have handled it, even knowing Dru wouldn't cooperate. But this was miserable, and didn't look like it'd be getting any better. "Maybe you ought to go." The words were barely audible, but they were there, naked in the air. He was tired, from the effort of the argument and everything else that had happened since Dru had walked through the hospital doors, from everything that had happened in the past weeks. And they weren't doing anything but making themselves miserable.

Chase's words sounded so much like a dismissal, but it was something that Dru had begun to think about already, that she needed to go. "Yeah," she said softly. Even though she knew she would have to go eventually, something in the way he said it, or perhaps just the fact that it was Chase that mentioned it, hit a spot in her mind that forced her previous thoughts even harder. She pulled her hand from his and stood, "I'll see you."

No kiss, no meaningful look, not that he should have expected them, but her casual goodbye lent a finality to things that only cemented the discomfort between them. For all the time they'd been together, he hadn't learned a thing about how he was supposed to act, so he treated this like any other strained goodbye. "See you." This was her chance to walk out with no guilt, and he wouldn't doubt it if she didn't come back. Chase didn't look at Dru, but stared resolutely at one corner of the ceiling, eyes determinedly dark.

Dru chewed her lip before opening her mouth. No words came, her throat closed at the expression on his face and in his words. So she didn't speak, no matter the angry, hurt, and confused thoughts running rampant through her mind. She watched him in silence for a moment more before tucking her hair behind her ear and leaving Chase's side, however much she hated to leave when the problem hadn't been resolved. But she didn't know how to resolve it, or even what exactly the problem was, so how was she to fix it? She looked back at him when she pulled open the door before letting it shut softly behind her.

Chase listened for the sound of the door, then exhaled as it swung shut. His muscles were tight, jaw tense, but he gave no other sign that what had happened disturbed him in the least. He was busy convincing himself he didn't care. She didn't, or if she did, it wasn't enough for her to just trust him. He'd slipped up once. Chase shrugged it off. There wasn't anything he could do about it now, so he might as well let it go. He shifted, wincing slightly, and brought his hand against the book Dru had left. At least he wouldn't be bored for a while. www.magikal05.proboards46.com/v45index.cgi?board=hospital&action=display&thread=3033&page=1
