Chase growled with frustration, unable to make any sort of rational argument, since rationally he knew she was right. "I'm f**king sick of this place!" And yet, it was his own damn fault he hadn't healed up enough to leave yet. Even so, he couldn't regret what he'd done. Even if he consciously refused to think about the near-breakdown it had brought about, it was that very near-breakdown that had purged his overpowering hatred of Emilian and allowed him to move past it.

"Well yeah, you're not supposed to like being in the hospital. It's incentive to stay out of that kind of situation," Dru said, her eyes narrowed at his outburst. She stared into his eyes, putting her hands on the edge of the bed to mess with the sheet absentmindedly again like she had when he was first in the wing.

Chase's eyes narrowed right back. "I'm not a moron, Dru. I know why I'm here, but that doesn't make it any easier to put up with." Chase realized he was taking out a couple weeks' worth of increasingly bad temper on Dru, but the knowledge wasn't enough to cool him off. Chase looked away from Dru to glare back into the hospital wing. He'd repented--a little--for his attacks on Emilian, and had decided that the physical and emotional stress he'd already been through was punishment enough.

"I didn't call you a moron. I know how it is to be in here, it sucks, but you have to suck it up and deal with it." Dru knew that he wasn't the type to sit quietly and let his time go by, but she hadn't expected him to take it out on her. And whether Chase was trying to get her in bed or blowing up at her, he was taking it out on her.

Chase turned back to Dru, eyes sparking. "I've been sucking it up, and every damn thing that could've gone bad here has gone worse!" Chase clamped his mouth shut before he could go into detail, but the thoughts were easy enough to read in the swirling crimson of his eyes. Chase looked away, his jaw tightening as he silently berated himself for yet another momentary loss of control.

"What happened, Chase? Tell me. Why are you so pissed? Why, after this time, is it that you can't even pick up a book without wincing?" Dru looked into his face determinedly, she wouldn't back down, even if he got even more angry with her. Her jaw was set, she wanted to know what happened, she told herself that she wouldn't let him distract her again.

Chase didn't answer at first. He glared resolutely into the room, jaw set as his mind dredged up things he'd rather leave buried. She only needed to know about Emilian, the end result that Chase wouldn't go after him again. But she'd ask more questions, and it all came down to Chase and Emilian bickering over Storm. Dru wouldn't like that. "Let's just say I'm leaving Emilian alone now." She was more than smart enough to fill in the blanks.

Dru's eyes flashed. It wasn't so much that there had obviously been an argument of some sort, but that he was obviously hiding something, being purposefully vague. "When are you going to stop trying to hide things from me?" she asked angrily. "I've never hid anything from you." Whatever he had to say, or to hide, she wished he would just say it, it was better for him to just out and say it then to not and let her find out some other way.

The simple answer was because it sounded bad. He couldn't see any way of explaining it without coming off looking like he'd done something else she'd just hate him for, assuming he even got through his side of things. "It doesn't do anyone any good to drag crap out just for the sake of dragging crap out," he argued. "It's not that big a deal."

"Well I didn't plan on dragging it out. I had hoped that for once I could ask you what happened, I'd get a straight answer, and we could move on with our lives. But no, it doesn't work that way, does it?" Dru gave a deep sigh and sat back, her arms crossed. She looked away from him, wondering at how quickly their conversations could turn. But she just wanted a straight answer, whatever it was she could handle.

Chase twisted to face Dru, grimacing at the pain and effort of the movement. "You want me to tell you crap that'll just hurt you anyway? You need to know everything I do when you're not watching me? How much is enough? I told you I'm done with Emilian, that ought to be enough!" Chase pulled sharp breaths between his teeth, but refused to lie down again. He wanted to get up, to pace the floor like a caged panther, but half sitting was more than enough effort after this long in bed.

"I'd rather hear it from you than from someone else! Whatever the hell happened I can't exactly hold you accountable, it's not like you're in any position to do anything about it, right?" Dru had stood, her hands moving with her words. "And not telling me only makes it look worse. I can't help it I like knowing, if I don't know I'll think about it and think about it until it's so blown out of proportion I end up like....well, like this!" She stared at him for a few moments more before turning away from him, trying to take deep breaths to calm herself. No, she didn't need to know everything he did, but when he answered her like he had been doing, she wondered.

Chase stared at Dru's back, just processing everything she'd said. Can't exactly hold you accountable, she'd said. He gritted his teeth, silently working out how much he could tell her now and let her think that was all. She didn't need to know about Pandora. That hadn't been an event, but an annoyance. It was the rest that was difficult. "Emilian was trying to get me worked up," he started, "and it's not like it took that much." He paused, his tongue sweeping briefly over suddenly dry lips. "He started talking crap about you and I choked him. Wrapped my hands around his neck and just held on. Just when he was going out, I decided it wasn't worth it." Chase lay back and closed his eyes, physically and emotionally spent. "So, the nurse moved us, and I'm leaving him alone. Are you happy?"

Dru looked over her shoulder as she listened to him. There was probably more, but what he told her was much better than before. She would be happy with it, if only because she didn't want to stay as high strung as she had been. She turned around, her arms tightly crossed, "See? That wasn't so hard," she said in a voice that sounded strange to her ears. "That's all I wanted," she said in a slightly more normal tone. Her muscles were still tense, though.

Chase opened his eyes to look at Dru, momentarily suspicious. She was really satisfied with that? And she'd given him no schoolmarm lecture on his temper, and only the smallest I-told-you-so. He wasn't about to argue his luck. "And I told you it wasn't that big a deal," he said. It wasn't, once he'd watered it down and filtered out all the dangerous information.
