"If you say so, I'm following your lead, Andy," Gavin said, glancing down at the books they both carried. Naturally, that only meant his eyes traveled down the length of Andy's body, but he was allowed a look now and again wasn't he? He chose not to acknowledge that his looks were many and had little time between.

Andy was determined to keep his gaze away from Gavin for as long as he was thinking about the X-Rated section at the movie store, which maybe he actually had seen before, and missed that long look entirely. It wasn't until he was back at the Staff Picks display and setting out the stack of books he'd collected that he finally felt comfortable again.
It was as he was setting Moby Díck beside Getting Off that he finally heard a door open from the back of the shop. His eyes widened. "Quick! Put your books up!" he whispered, and reached over to help.

Gavin's eyes widened all over again and between the worry about doing something bad in a shop, however harmless, and the nerves from their earlier conversation, even the briefest brush of contact from Andy sent shocks through him. "I, wouldn't it look less suspicious if we just acted like we were going to buy these?" he managed.

Andy's eyes widened as their hands brushed, and one of the books fell to the floor with a thud. "We didn't come in to buy stuff!" he whispered, and threw Gavin's books up in no particular order. He bent to grab the one that had fallen, pushed it into place, then braced himself.
Hello? the shopkeeper called.
Andy grabbed Gavin's hand and tugged him toward the door at top speed, sneakers squeaking at the motion.
Hello?
Andy burst into mischievous giggles.

Gavin's eyes widened so far he was certain they would just pop out of his head, not only because of the fact they were running from a shopkeeper, but also because of the contact of their hands. He didn't even get a glimpse of the staff member before they were out the door. "You're horrid!" he declared, though he found that his lips were curved in a smile. His hand wasn't quite willing to let go of Andy's.

Andy giggled some more and ducked down just below the edge of the window. He tugged Gavin's hand to pull him down as well, and looked over at him, eyes glittering. "Do you want to go back in?" he asked, then moved to peek back through the window. It took him a moment to locate the confused-looking employee, but there wasn't any yelling, and there wasn't a single angrily shaking fist.

Gavin crouched awkwardly beneath the window, torn between forcing himself to enjoy the strange experience and going in to apologize to the poor employee. "No!" he said, horrified at the thought. He didn't think he could handle the chance of coming face to face with the employee. "I feel like I just ran the bases."

Andy grinned at Gavin before peeking back into the store. "Awww, she saw it," he said. A flick of the wand and the books they'd picked out began soaring back to their spots. The employee yawned as she picked up one of the fantasy novels, then ignored the stack of original Staff Picks to wander off with it. Well, that was a waste of time. The employee didn't even have a good reaction.

Gavin turned to look into the store in time to see the thoroughly unimpressed worker heading back towards the counter. The lack of a reaction made him relax a little, though that just meant he became more aware of how his hand still gripped Andy's. "I think you're one of those bad influences my parents were always so worried about," he said. Obviously he didn't mind all that much, though.

"Yeah, I'm totally a thug," Andy teased, and sunk below the window line once more. He looked aside and only then seemed to really realize that his hand was curled comfortably in and around Gavin's. Should he let go? His eyes stuck on Gavin's, and his thumb twitched as a single heartbeat passed and his mind whirled to decide.

"I don't think I mind," Gavin said, though a more accurate comment might have been something about how much he liked it. It was easy to forget that they were crouched at the side of the main street of the time. This thumb shifted against Andy's hand in response. There were gay professors, even married ones, no one would look twice at them. Right?

Ohmygod. He wasn't the only one having a moment here, was he? His gaze flickered to Gavin's lips, and he wondered if this meant they were going to kiss. But Gavin wasn't moving. But they were still holding hands, and even if only a couple seconds had passed, they were crazy long seconds, and Andy felt a little dizzy and a little breathless.
I know you’re not supposed to ask if you can kiss someone.
Well then, he wouldn't ask. His lashes drooped, and he leaned forward.

Gavin's eyes closed, then opened again to make sure things were lined up right, and even then his aim was slightly off. Only about half of his lips found Andy's. It wasn't quite the glamorous first kiss he'd imagined during the few times he'd imagined it, but it still made his heart race. He had definitely never imagined his first time would happen beneath a bookstore window.

Somehow their noses hadn't mashed together, which had been one of Andy's biggest worries. The fact that their lips weren't perfectly aligned meant nothing next to that. There was warmth and... was he allowed to breathe? Well, he had little choice, so he breathed as softly as he could and shifted his lips slightly to match up better. It was the best feeling ever.

It didn't take long for Gavin to start feeling overwhelmed, and however good the more or less innocent kiss may have felt he cut it short. His eyes stayed closed and he tried not to think about how red his cheeks probably were. "So, first kiss," he breathed, then opened one eye to peek at his companion.
