"Yeah, we had some hotshot ex-quidditch player here for a couple years, but he quit in 2010, decided he was too good for the place. I had a couple friends who were totally into it and the guy never showed up for practice." It was a good thing he didn't keep up with that stuff or he'd have to boycott it to make a point.

"Too good for Hogwarts? That's a hell of an ego," Aubergine said. "Too bad I didn't think about applying sooner, I heard they hire some really young professors here." There wasn't much she knew about the goings on at Hogwarts, but she had been told that much during the application process.

"They do. I started the year after I left school," Dare said. "My Transfiguration professor was leaving to spend more time with her kids and she recommended me for the position. The Charms professor turned eighteen the day before he started here. There's a lot of talent in the staff, and the Headmistress is good at spotting potential." It would be false modesty to deny his skill in Transfiguration, but he meant to brag on the others.

"Hm, I'll make sure not to train any of my students too well, wouldn't want anyone stealing my job when I get too old," Aubergine said, though it didn't really sound like things worked that way. "You're just full of information, they didn't put all of this in the contract," she teased. "Anything else I need to look out for? People I should avoid or anything?"

"Not really," Dare said. "You'll figure things out." He gestured down a wide staircase that happened to be right where it should today. "I've turned into the unofficial Hogwarts Welcoming Committee," he told her. "Guess I get around a lot, because I know about everyone. Do I sound like a handbook yet?" His lips quirked.

"Just a little," Aubergine teased, grinning. "You seem like the kind of guy that knows about everyone. I guess it's a good thing I met you, I tend to be one of those who gets to know about everyone." A fact that made it even more impressive that she'd more or less stayed out of drama in school.

"My partner and I are the partiers around here if you're the social type," Dare said. He got the impression she was. "Don't get me wrong, we take our jobs seriously, but..." He looked around as though worried he'd be over heard, then dropped his voice. "We've got lives outside Hogwarts."

"Oh, for shame," Aubergine said, feigning horror. "Didn't they tell you that educators aren't allowed to do anything but grade papers and dock points?" She would have to take Dare up on the vague offer. He seemed like fun enough, and if his partner was anything similar they probably had very interesting lives outside of Hogwarts.

Dare shook his head. "They were too busy throwing Indian weddings and inviting half of Eurasia and New England," he said. "The professors are good, but the media sticks its fingers into everything. Not a lot is private around here. I swear I haven't even told you anything everyone doesn't know." Including the ex-Death Eater bit.

Aubergine shrugged slightly. "I'll try not to do anything that will embarrass my mum if she reads the paper," she said. "The most scandalous thing I've ever done is turn down a quidditch team, so that shouldn't be too hard." She enjoyed being social and going out, but she wasn't exactly wild.

"And there's proof that teachers aren't here because they can't make it anywhere else," Dare said. When he was a teenager he'd thought that whole Those who can, do, and those who can't, teach thing was hilarious, but he had a different view now that he was on the inside.
"There's a Hufflepuff on the reserve for the Arrows, I think. And a 7th Year Gryffindor named Brindle who's been trying to catch a break for years. Only female beater I've ever seen that can knock a guy off a broom, and about this big around." His hands gave an approximation of Brindle's size. He just wouldn't mention that she'd been one of his friends for years.

"Really?" Aubergine asked, obviously impressed at the information. Most schools didn't even have one person with enough talent to get on a team. "I'm a beater, I'll have to hunt her down." She liked turning men on their heads a little when it came to being a beater, it was always amusing to see the inevitable underestimation result in a bad time had by the men.

"Just put out word of Quidditch practice and she'll show up," Dare said. Somehow he wasn't surprised to find out that Aubergine was a beater. She was the most openly friendly person he'd met in a while, and it was refreshing. "That's all I know about Quidditch at Hogwarts," he said apologetically.

"Ah, that's fine, I'll find out soon enough," Aubergine said, waving a hand and shrugging. "Besides, if there are only a few people actually interested, that means they'll work harder and I can focus better. It's not like Transfiguration where you have to just deal with every kid on campus."

Abigail wasn't normally in this part of the castle, as she preferred to stay near the hospital, but an emergency had called her out. She was returning, medical bag in hand, when she overheard voices ahead. She turned a corner to find one very familiar person, and one she didn't recognize at all.
"Hello, Dare," she said, smiling brightly at the tall man with the bright blue hair. She then looked at the woman beside him. "You must be the new professor? I'm Madam Reynolds, the Healer at Hogwarts. Most people call me Abi, though."
