When Castiel split with Mari for the night, he headed for the library. It annoyed him that he was apparently playing directly into a stereotype, but he'd had an impossible time trying to write in bed last night, and the Common Room was way more full than it should have been. His housemates were a bunch of preps and nerds.
Dearest Darkest Queen of My Heart, the letter began. He was set up at a little grouping of squashy armchairs, with his bag on the floor behind him. He'd even slid his shoes off, and they were tucked away so that he could pull his feet up. Since mood music wasn't an option, he needed enough quiet to lose himself for a bit where no one would ask stupid questions like, What are you doing?
I'm composing a love letter to someone cooler than you'll ever be, now shove off.
Well, maybe he wouldn't say that, but he'd think it.

Mari knew Castiel would be in the library, though exactly where was a more difficult question. There were a few places he thought to check first before finally coming upon his friend. Without warning, he rounded a chair beside Castiel and gloomily slumped into it, then slid down until his butt was all but hanging out of the chair. He stared across at a bookcase. "Indigo dumped me," he grumbled.

Castiel blinked up from his letter, but partially-glazed eyes cleared quickly and he turned to focus on Mari. "What?!" he gasped. Oh, he'd heard perfectly well, but it was difficult to believe. "Elitist... snob!" he hissed, trying to keep his voice at proper library level. No one was too good for his Mari! In fact, no one was good enough! "Do you want me to duel him? I could kick his ass, you know I could!"

"He's hoping to be with someone else," Mari said. His friend's energetic support only slightly helped. He sniffed and halfheartedly shook his head. "It's just stupid, and he's a jerk." And he'd keep repeating that Indigo was a jerk until it stopped sounding like a real word. Then he'd pick another one and do the same.

"What—hoping to be with someone else? What kind of a~hole says something like that?" Castiel looked down at his partially-composed letter to Cheyenne, then rolled it up without waiting for the ink to dry. If it smeared, he'd just rewrite it later. He reached around for his bag to stuff it inside.

"There's someone he wants to be with, and the guy's not even free yet, 'cause Indigo said it was better to do it now than to wait until the guy's free," Mari said. He looked over at Castiel finally. "What...what if the guy doesn't even wanna be with him? Or if the guy's never free?" His eyes dropped down to his hands and watched as he picked at his nails.

"Then he's a d~ and an idiot," Castiel said firmly. He sat properly in his chair and reached for his shoes, just in case Mari let him loose to duel after all, or in case there needed to be an emergency ice cream run. "If he wasn't such a... a jerk, I'd say you should steal him back, because you're the best and anyone else sucks."

Mari snorted at that and shook his head. "The other guy can have him, and then lose him when Indigo decides he wants someone else more," he said. Of course, he wouldn't even be able to hate the other guy, because maybe the other guy didn't even know. No. He preferred to think the other guy knew. Then he had two people to hate.

"I thought he liked Brindle," Castiel said, then caught himself. His eyes opened wide. Noooo. He glanced at Mari, who he was certain hadn't noticed what he had, then tried to look casual as he tied his shoelaces. "Well, you're better off without him," he said. "It means we can make out again."

"Yeah," Mari said. He might have liked the thought more if he wasn't thinking about the fact that he would definitely never even so much as look Indigo in the eye ever again. He'd been so excited, more excited than he had ever admitted to, and now it was gone because there was someone else Indigo wanted more than him. "I didn't think I was a bad boyfriend." Maybe he wasn't the best, but he hadn't been bad, had he?

"You're amazing," Castiel said. "You're the best friend ever in the whole world, and he's just too stupid to see it." And maybe he was also lusting after Jory. But it didn't make sense to wait a whole year all alone just hoping that someone would be single when you graduated! Maybe he was wrong. Maybe that weird argument between the two hadn't meant anything at all.

"Yeah, well, screw him. He was all I'm sorry and stuff, and I didn't listen to any of it, I left as soon as I could. I don't want to go back to the tower tonight." There wasn't really anywhere else for Mari to go, though. Maybe he could learn an invisibility charm and slip through the common room unseen, then he wouldn't have to worry about Indigo being there.

"I'd say you could sleep with me, but I think someone would notice a Gryffindor in the tower." And the library closed at curfew. There wasn't really anything to do about it except see if he could chill Mari out enough to cope with going to bed.

"Yeah," Mari said. "I could hide in an empty classroom all night, but that'd suck." Maybe he'd go back to the tower and get in the shower for so long that everyone thought he'd died or something. He pulled himself up to sit a bit more properly, but it only lasted a moment before he propped his elbows on his knees, bent over, and clasped his hands behind his neck. "I thought he liked me." He looked at the floor.

Castiel's eyes softened a bit as he looked over at Mari. So did I. The guy obviously had no taste. "Maybe he's got like, horrible cancer and he's only got a month to live and he was trying to spare you," he suggested. He was still a moment, then reached over to sift lightly through Marius's hair. "He was totally into you. There's just something wrong with his brain or something."
