"That thing is cool, I'll admit that, but I don't really trust it. He's never seen these people. He thinks it helps, but he could be telling me, or you, you know?" Matthew thought it would be better to tell someone he could see and touch, someone that wasn't an ocean away or that could be someone completely different.

"Yeah," Dare said. The whole thing was complicated and he didn't fully understand it, but he imagined that if Rhys was so so on the edge of sanity so much because of everything, anyone he talked to who'd been though similar things might be just as angry about it all, just as confused.
"The future, then," Dare said, gesturing back to the right arm of the cross. "Laguz. Deep sexuality. Huge and uncontrolled like the ocean," he said, and paused. "Would you say things are getting out of control?" He didn't expect an answer, but it was something for Matthew to ponder.

Matthew looked up at Dare and, after a moment, nodded. "To say the least. He's been asking for things I can't give him, I can't...I mean it's different hitting him with a cane and telling him he's worthless and disgusting for liking men, I can't do that and it's just been getting worse. It's never enough anymore, no matter what I do." It was worrying.

Dare looked back down at the runes and nodded. It sounded plausible, Rhys asking for something like that, but all the same, there was no part of him that could believe it would help him. He pushed ineffectually at his hair, then went on.
"Sexuality defines Rhys," he suggested, thinking out loud more than anything. "I mean, more than most of us, maybe any of us. He thinks about it all the time, I think. He wants you, he feels bad for it, he gets off on being abused, but he feels bad about liking it." It really was out of control.
"But Laguz can also be like the tide. It comes and goes, you know? It can represent the return from a journey. Rhys loved his parents, I get the idea he still wants to change himself and make them happy, but he might have been happy once. Maybe this is a return from all the hell he'd been to."

"If that's what's happening, then it's sure as hell a perfect example of things getting worse before they get better. He still loves those horrible excuses for parents, he's told me before he wants to make things right with them. He told me once he wants to get married some day and he wishes his dad would perform the ceremony," Matthew said, shaking his head. "If I can help it, he's not getting anywhere near either of them." He unclenched a fist he hadn't realized he had made. Rhys seemed intent on forgiving all the people involved, but Matthew was angry enough at them all for the both of them.

Dare swore under his breath at that, and shook his head. Yes, Rhys was definitely still stuck on making his parents happy. There were so many questions that Matthew wouldn't know the answer to, and even Rhys probably hadn't thought out. Did Rhys believe he'd turn straight some day? Did he believe he'd just get tired of sex and go into a loveless, sexless marriage so his parents would take him back? Did he think that if he did all that, that he'd ever feel truly loved?
"It makes you almost want to go Imperius the hell out of them for a few hours just to make him happy, doesn't it?"

A sad smile spread across Matthew's face and he nodded. "You have no idea," he said. "I think I'm going to bring him some things when I go see him. I have a collar, up in the bedroom. I bought it ages ago but it never felt right to put it on him. I still don't feel like it's right right now, but I might present it. I don't know if it'll help, but I think it'll mean a lot to him."

Dare nodded and looked back over at Matthew as he returned his runes to their bag. "Good luck, mate," he said. "I wish I had some advice, but this is about as much as I've got right now." He started mixing the runes absently, trying to narrow his own thoughts down into a question, since he had it going. "Can't live with them, can't live without them, right?" Will my relationship with Michael survive? Dare pulled out the first rune.

"Yeah," Matthew said, then lapsed into silence as Dare drew his own runes. He reached into his pocket and put the phone Rhys had forced on him on the table, though of course Rhys hadn't returned any of his calls. He shook his head and settled in to watch Dare, hoping to take his mind off Rhys for a few more minutes.

Dare tried not to look directly at the runes as he lined them up, three in a row. He'd done a simple Norns spread for himself, and though the situation wasn't simple, he didn't think he could take another complicated answer.
On the left, in the past, was Raido, the rune of riding, like a cart or cargo. It was reversed. Figures, he thought. That meant a disruption of communication. It told him that they didn't have solid advice, and hinted that one or both of them was holding a position that wasn't morally sound. He didn't like that part at all, whether it meant Michael's distant past, or his own more recent f~ ups. The past was always connected to the present.
Man. He wasn't happy to see that little bastard again, and again, the rune was reversed. That meant a separation from others, a lack of harmony in interaction with others, either because of a lack of acceptance of society, or because society didn't accept them. He thought it was a little of both, though how that represented the present he wasn't sure. Maybe it meant an intellectual block, or incomplete spiritual attainment. There was more than enough of that going around.
On the right, in the future, was Ehwaz, the eight-legged horse ridden by Odin. It was controlled movement and travel, the pursuit of something. It could represent the union of man and nature, or the fusion of two entities in perfect harmony.
And it was reversed.
Difficulties. Difficulties in self-improvement and attempts at advancement. A splitting of two, or the inability of two to act as one.
Dare's brows drew together, and he let his hair swing forward as he scooped the runes up in one handful. "Divination is a load of crap anyway," he muttered. Yes, he could admit to himself that he was disappointed, but he wasn't going to cry over a few stupid stones.

"Don't tell that to that one prefect kid that comes in here all the time," Matthew said. Ever since that little annoyingly cute trio had visited the first time they hadn't gone more than a couple of days without seeing one of them. "What did it say? I mean, you don't have to tell me or anything, but you helped me." Dare obviously didn't approve of whatever the things had told him.

"It says we stopped communicating, one of us has got moral issues, and we're not going to make it," Dare said, as though he'd told Matthew his question. Not that it would be difficult to figure out from that. "If Jory's got more luck with the stones, more power to him." He started to fold up his white cloth. He was tempted to try again, to ask the question once more in a slightly different way, but all that happened when you did that was that you ended up with more information than you needed and it got too complicated to make sense of.

"I always heard that that kind of stuff wasn't 100% or something, it's got a lot of different ways it can be interpreted, right?" Matthew asked. Then he shrugged. He didn't really know much about it, it wasn't concrete enough for him. "Maybe you just got a bad draw." Surely it could happen, Dare wasn't a seer as far as Matthew knew.

Dare gave a rueful chuckle. It had definitely been a bad draw, but he couldn't fully convince himself that it was a bunch of random nonsense. He shook his head and at the last moment before he would have pulled the string to close his bag, he stuck his hand in just one more time. Are Michael and I fated to fail?
Dare pulled out a single rune, and looked at it with a tightened jaw. Perth, the rune of chance and gambling. Reversed. "Bullsh~," Dare grumbled, and dropped the rune back into the bag. It could represent secrets revealed or mysteries uncovered. It could be a warning against gambling; now wasn't the time to take a chance.
He couldn't help thinking of his impending visit with Mistress V.
