"He loves them," Michael said. "I mean...he wasn't ready for kids. But I got it in my head because of my mother and I couldn't let it go. But he loves them, he got excited about it, and he loves making them smile or laugh. I still know that in the first place it was me that wanted them, not him, though. He tells me I don't owe him for them or anything, but I still feel guilty."

"I love them with all my heart, I can't explain why I feel guilty," Michael said. "He was always so patient with me and I couldn't do the same for him. I didn't start feeling guilty until the last few months, when we started having problems."

"I don't know," Michael said. "He hasn't said anything about them." But would Dare really do that? He looked down at hands clenched tightly together. "Maybe." He couldn't very well go up to Dare and say so, club Friday night? Oh, and by the way, is this all because of the twins?

"We've tried, but it hasn't been regular," Michael said. He could think of a few times they had gone out since having the twins, but they were few and relatively far between. "Since we talked last, when he left, I've been trying to think of ways we could get together maybe once a week, just us." It wouldn't be much, but it would be more than they had right now.

"It's important to find ways to keep that connection between the two of you strong, perhaps even more important than when the two of you were finishing school," Kane said. "You've said that the two of you connected over art. That may be a place to start, to remind both of you why you're together. Find some common ground besides the twins."

Michael nodded. "Art...music...I could take him to a gallery, maybe," he said. They had never managed to do something like that, though they had talked at one point of doing so to see if they could get Dare's foot in the door. He leaned back in his chair, thoughtful.
