With that nod, Jory pushed open the door. "Hello?" he called. He knew it was a new owner, but he hadn't heard anything about the man, and no one was behind the counter. He stepped up to the counter and craned his neck to look back into the shelves of wand boxes.

"Give me a moment," Donovan called from his place halfway down the stairs. He had finally decided that he would give staying upstairs a shot. With a warning system in place, he could generally be at the counter within a minute of the person opening the door. A glance at the two people told him he likely wasn't selling a wand today and he repressed a sigh as he finished buttoning up the top few buttons of his shirt. "Can I help you?"

Hyacinth closed his eyes a moment as the door fell closed behind him, then glanced aside at Jory. "I would like a wand," he said, looking to the man behind the counter. He held his paper up, barely recognizable anymore as a Hogwarts supply list, then stepped forward, silently praying as he approached the counter.

"He's starting Hogwarts a bit late," Jory explained, once he got over the shock of seeing the wand-maker's half naked chest. Going nearly a year without so much as kissing hit much harder when faced with someone that looked like that.

Donovan raised an eyebrow but didn't comment. "Are you right or left-handed?" he asked instead as he pulled out a tape measure. A flick of his wand sent it to taking measurements. Notes appeared in a ledger open on his desk. "All of my wands are made by me, I use some unusual cores, but I like to experiment."

Hyacinth had meant to answer, but he was shocked into silence by the flying tape measure. He squeezed his eyes closed, and though he stuck his right arm out as far as he could, his left hand closed again around his cross, and his lips moved in silent prayer. His hair, now near-white with pale pink highlights, stopped shifting any further.

Jory's eyebrows creased and when the tape measure settled itself back on the desk he came up to Hyacinth. "You okay?" he asked softly, reaching out a tentative hand for the guy's shoulder. He had seen first years in multiple states of reaction to the new world, but he hadn't seen one react quite like this.

Donovan watched but said nothing. He didn't particularly care what the boy's problem was. His job was to sell a wand, not provide counsel. Once the measure was finished he took in the notes with a quick glance and stepped away from the counter to search for wands he deemed appropriate. "I'll be back in a minute or two."

Hyacinth opened his eyes to watch the man behind the counter leave, then turned his gaze to Jory. "This is difficult," he said, unsure how to explain. "It was the work of devils, this magic. Always when this happened it was praying and calling for the priest. My teacher, he said that it is good, and I have no fear of you, but the magic..." He shook his head and looked down at his hands, rubbing absently at his rosary.

"That's why we hide," Jory said, pulling his hand back. "A lot of them are scared, 'cause they don't understand it. But it's as natural as having blue eyes, you know?" But Hyacinth didn't know, that was the whole reason he was freaked out. Jory just couldn't wrap his mind around a family like that.

Donovan was preceded by a few flying boxes that stacked themselves up on the desk, and he held a few more in his arms. "You're going to take each wand in turn, you'll know when one has chosen you," he said. He put the rest of the boxes on his desk and reached for one. He opened it and held the wand out for the boy.

Hyacinth had thought it was his poor English before, but this time, he was sure he'd heard correctly. "I do not choose?" he asked. The flying boxes he'd eyed warily, but there was quite a bit of difference between seeing something move, and having that moving object wrap around one's arm. He glanced at Jory again, then reached into the offered box and grasped the wand's naturally streaked, dark blonde handle. Almost immediately on raising it, the wand gave a loud bang! and he dropped it onto its velvet bed.

As the other boy stepped back to give the pale-haired one room, Donovan closed the box and sent it back to its place. "I do have a wand for you, sometimes you find it on the first shot and sometimes it takes a few tries," he said, eying his stack of boxes before picking one out and offering it to the boy. He was always curious to see which wands would choose which person, and he always marked it down in his ledger for future reference. He liked to think that eventually he would be able to pick the right wand on his first go.

Hyacinth nodded and took a slow breath before reaching for the second wand, smooth, pale, and beautiful. There were no bangs this time, no sparks, and in fact, little happened at all besides the shift of his hair back toward its natural brown color. "How will I know?" he asked. He looked at the wand a moment longer, then settled it back into its box.

"You'll know," Donovan said as he sent the second box away. "It's like...hm." He debated how to explain it while his hands hovered over the remaining boxes. He finally chose one and spoke as he lifted the lid. "Warm, like meeting an old friend." An old friend that would never willingly leave, one that would stay by his side for the rest of his life if he took care of it.
