"Trent's bats~ insane, he's got issues he needs serious help with," Keith said. "I could maybe...I don't know, try to be a friend, I want to send an owl to him where he is now. But there's no way I could have a relationship with him." He couldn't handle the possibility of random freak outs and suicide attempts.

"Batsh~ insane?" Dare echoed. He pulled to a stop in the middle of a path, and Elouai busied herself sniffing the grass. "I got that he had an attitude, and he had problems, but I didn't know he was that bad. Does he like, see things that aren't there or something?" That last time they'd all gone out together, he'd gotten the impression that Trent was hesitant somehow, that his attitude was just a cover. But then, that had been Michael once, too.

"No," Keith said with an exasperated sigh. "I just...I don't know, okay, maybe not bats~ insane. He can't stand contact unless it's directly leading to sex, he freaked out and I have no clue why, he threatened suicide, he's apparently got a history of depression and everything. I can't handle that in a relationship, even if I wanted a relationship right now."

"Okay," Dare said. If Keith couldn't handle it, he couldn't handle it. "Sounds like Michael though. You know, how he used to be, with the problems touching. And depression..." Dare shrugged and looked away, off down the path while he waited for Elouai to mark her place.
"If he used to do drugs and he's not now, and he's alone in Hogsmeade, that kind of depression doesn't sound crazy. It sounds like he's doing damn good. I can see it, is all." Michael's intimacy issues. Markise's alcohol addiction. Ariel's drugs. His own recurring depression, especially after the attack. Was it even possible not to be depressed with all that on one person's shoulders?

"Anyone that can deal with that deserves a medal," Keith said. "The guy needs someone that can help him through it, and I'm not that guy. I'm going to send him an owl, I just...don't know when or what to say."

Dare shook his head slightly, but didn't say anything. If no one else would help the guy, then maybe he'd try to. He'd just help everyone. He'd help the kids at the shelter, help the kids at school, help the ex-druggie down the street, help Keith. Someone needed to help, and he couldn't sit idly by if there was anything he could do. He couldn't understand people who saw problems like that and just walked on by. He tugged gently at Elouai's leash and resumed walking.

Keith was silent as he started walking by Dare again. "What, Dare?" he asked. "I'm sorry, does it make me an arse? I just can't deal with it, especially not right now." His head wasn't anywhere near the right place for something like that. Besides, according to Rowan he needed to get back into dating. Which really was probably a good idea.

Dare shook his head again. "No one wants to deal with other people's sh~," he said. It was just the way things were. Everyone had their own problems, and no one had enough sanity left over to help someone else. So why help? Why put yourself out when no one else would put themselves out for you? "It's none of my business, don't worry about it."

Keith didn't feel any better for the short conversation. He was silent instead on the way around back toward the group. He hoped that he would be able to get out of his funk without much issue. Maybe he should try to get Matthew to hook him up with someone. Once the blanket was in view, he quickened his steps.

Dare stopped beside Matthew, then knelt to let Elouai loose. "I was right about Trent," he said, hopefully low enough that no one else could hear. "He's got problems with depression, so Keith's out of there." That was simplifying things quite a bit, but it was the bottom line. He pushed to his feet, and the dog ran off to check on the babies. "Done with Rowan too, but only because the guy's married."

Matthew had picked himself up off the blanket, where Rhys had been attempting to get him used to the twins. "Yeah? Good thing he's done with Rowan, that whole thing was a mess. Trent..." He shrugged and looked back over toward the blanket. "I dunno, man. Rhys has some issues, but he got most of them figured out before we met I think. I mean, I wouldn't know what to do in that situation, you know?"

Dare shook his head. "I've been there," he said. "Not as deep as it sounds like Trent's been, not with the drugs, but I've been where there's nothing left but wanting to die so it'll stop, and you can't get over it alone. I don't know what issues Rhys had, I don't know how he got through it, but if everyone walks away, that's the worst thing that can happen." If the kid was suicidal, walking away would just be affirmation that he wasn't worth anything.

Matthew looked over at Dare almost curiously. "Are you okay?" he asked. Maybe he needed to get Rhys to talk to Dare. He turned his attention to Rhys and crossed his arms lightly across his chest. He knew Rhys had been in some places that were deeper and darker than any he could imagine.

Dare glanced aside at Matthew. "Yeah," he said, then looked out across the grass. "But I went through some stuff, and it was too easy to cut myself off from my friends, you know? They were going through their own stuff. I met Michael at the right time." And he'd had someone to focus on, and something to hope for. Without hope, there was no reason for anything.

"Yeah, I get the feeling sometimes I found Rhys at the right time," Matthew said. He knew that Rhys had been fairly stable when they had met, but he also knew other details that made him think the guy wasn't as okay as he put on. "I hope Rhys tells you sometime. He's told me a lot but...you know I don't know what the hell to say. I just hold him and tell him I love him." And he felt somewhat useless when faced with the horrors Rhys had gone through, he was even somewhat convinced that Rhys hadn't told him everything just yet. It would be good for Rhys to tell someone that had some experience in it.
