"Dare said she gave the detentions to Slytherins, at that," Keith said. "But I haven't met her, no. What kind of ideas did she have?" It was good to talk about something other than them, though Keith was sure the conversation would come back around to it eventually. It didn't really surprise him that Rowan had spoken with her.

"One of her main ideas was providing... deterrents to students caught out after curfew. We've all ignored curfew-breaking as long as the students show up to class, but cracking down on them could only help. That and, of course, detentions." Rowan held his tongue on asking if Keith had any ideas. The answer would likely be no, and he'd done enough of pointing out Keith's faults for one day.

"Dare and I talked about detentions," Keith said. "Most of the time here it's just, like, sit in a classroom and do nothing for an hour. Ours were always worse. Doing muggle cleaning or whatever. Something like that could help." He didn't particularly want to oversee students washing out bedpans, but he knew that if he was faced with doing so if he went out, he would probably think twice about leaving the school.

"I never knew much about detention," Rowan admitted. "At Beauxbatons and MINE I believe it was more like extended Study Hall. At MINE, there were howlers now and then, so they must have notified the parents." He'd never gotten detention, and hadn't been interested in researching it when he was trying to boost his resume. Knows a lot about detention didn't sound at all impressive.

"I wasn't a regular, but I did get sent in a couple of times," Keith said. "Generally it was cleaning some random room that no one ever used anyway." The fact that there was really no reason to clean it made the punishment all the worse. "This place is big, I'm sure there are plenty of nooks to set students with cleaning supplies on. And with how many of them need detentions this place will be sparkling by Halloween."

Rowan suddenly wanted to kill something, and the writer's block due to constant distraction was destroying his ability to act rationally. With no warning, he threw his arm out, sweeping everything on his desk to the floor in a heap of papers, books, and broken quills. He then bent, and with a mighty leap, jumped atop his desk and leaned back, wailing as he beat his hands upon his suddenly broad and bare chest.
"OH-EM-EFF-GEE!" he screamed.

"Unless it works," Rowan said. He knew better than to get his hopes up, but he also knew the students' likely collective reaction to the idea of manual labor. No part of him wanted to babysit a juvenile delinquent for three hours, but this would be far more unpleasant for them than sitting in a poorly-guarded room. He wasn't opposed to the effort it would take on his part, as long as they got thhe desired response.

"Maybe it will, never know," Keith said. "Is the new professor as high and mighty as she looks?" He didn't really have any urge to meet her, but he knew it would be impossible to go his career without speaking to her, so he might as well be prepared. Only after the words were out of his mouth did he worry that Rowan might look down on him for making assumptions about her.

"No, of course not," Rowan answered, though he hadn't thought her high and mighty tto begin with. "She went to school in Peru, she's confident and knows what she wants; I was impressed, actually." They'd carried a conversation all the way to the Astronomy tower, and he'd come away feeling as though he'd learned something. He'd gladly talk with her again.

Keith did have quite a bit to learn from Rowan. "I guess I'll be talking to her eventually," he said. "I still haven't met most of the professors, not officially." Rowan, Michael, and Dare were pretty much it. He had briefly met the headmaster and the history professor, but barely long enough to count. "Are you going to recruit her for this?"

"Recruiting her would be redundant," Rowan said. "She already has plans and is perfectly willing to face student hatred if it means getting things done. If we find anything super-effective I'll let her know, and perhaps she'll do the same, but we don't need to travel in packs. If we can't face them on our own, we don't stand a chance. It's more about sharing ideas."

"I don't mean going around together, just that it's easier to do this kind of thing if more than a couple of us is on the same page," Keith said. He had no thoughts that they would be going out together and looking for students to punish, that wouldn't do anything but teach the students to avoid them when they were together.

"The goal is to get the students under control so that education becomes the focus and the self-destructive behaviors are limited, right?" Rowan asked. "She's already there. She made her statement before she even got to Hogwarts, and the students know not to mess with her. We should all aspire to that level and ease of respect." It had certainly reminded him of his original enthusiasm to make a difference. He'd lost that so quickly, it seemed.

"Does that mean setting a good example by not going out?" Keith asked. He didn't particularly like the idea, but they would be being hypocritical otherwise. On the other hand, they were professors, adults, and could do whatever they wanted if they decided to. Of course, if he had known his professors were regularly going out on the weekends it wouldn't have been much incentive to stay in.

Rowan narrowed his eyes at Keith. "My extracurricular activities didn't exist outside my own mind until March," he pointed out. "And now no fewer than three people know. It's possible for professors to keep their private lives private. I was an excellent student, and earned my right to go out if I want to. I'm responsible about that as well, and that's one of the differences between us and the students. They won't see that difference, and we owe them no explanations." Rowan returned to his notes.
