After the non-visit to Lyric, Quinn had been feeling lonelier and lonelier, her hand fidgeted with the strap of her satchel as she stood outside of Kane's office. Her hand knocked slightly, today was not the right day to be alone, and she had promised for Lyric, for herself that she would talk to him anyways.
With Lyric gone, Kane was the next closest companion she had, with the exception of Markise who...well she was still a bit upset that he hadn't told her about his boyfriend. If she was honest, she might be jealous of his affections for the guy, or she could just be upset that he'd been so rude about Lyric, so unhelpful.
Kane was helpful. He didn't make her talk about the past, but she could talk. And she didn't want to be alone. This was the first year. Quinn just couldn't do it alone, not this year. Maybe next year, but today, she just needed a little bit of company.

Kane's door opened without Quinn having to wait, and he stood, smiling gently as he gestured for her to come in. "Quinn," he said in greeting. He knew what had happened, at least the official version, and had gone over Lyric's files repeatedly, but he'd been waiting for Quinn to visit. "Have a seat."

Quinn let a small smile filter over her lips, as she reached for her bag. She fumbled for a moment for a small bag she'd gotten out of the house elves. "I brought cupcakes," she said softly as she sat down and held them out. When she'd told the house elves what they were for, they had eagerly gotten her these sweets, and she'd practically had to beat them back from giving her more.

Kane's smile widened a bit as he got the door. "Thank you," he said, accepting one of the cupcakes. "How are you holding up?" he asked, rounding his desk. He sat down and leaned back comfortably in his chair.

Taking one of her own cupcakes she peeled the wrapping off of it, "with Lyric? Or myself? I know, I shouldn't have snapped at Jory like that...but I couldn't help it, you should support your friends, before yourself. I learned that the hard way." She dipped a fingertip into the frosting, eying it for a moment. "Today is my birthday, our birthday, it's my first without her."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Kane said, "but congratulations all the same. You're seventeen now, right? That comes with a lot of freedom." Something he'd guess she would be glad of. He wanted to get to the rest, to ask when she'd snapped at Jory, but one thing at a time.

Quinn's eyes looked up haunted as she sucked the frosting off of her finger. "Freedom doesn't exist. Not in my world." Her step-father didn't know about her shop, didn't know about anything here. "One day, I'll have to go back. One day he'll have someone for me to marry, to 'carry' on his name." She looked down at the cupcake in her hand, she was legal now, she knew what that meant. The cupcake might as well have turned into ash in her hands for the thoughts that being of age brought.

"Ah," Kane said, putting the pieces together. "Is that what you want to do, though? If you needed to get away, we could find a solution for you together." He had strong suspicions that Quinn was physically abused, but he couldn't act without knowing, or without her permission.

"I like my shop, I like my friends...well Lyric and mostly Markise. I don't want to do anything my step-father wants. But...I've learned my lessons. There is no way to do anything he doesn't want. I'm only here because he deemed me a liability." Because of what she'd seen, because of the lessons that she had learned that had made her that. "I don't want to leave Lyric, I understand him, and I think he's the best person to understand me."

"If you need protection, we can do that," Kane said. "We've done it before, put up protective spells. Your shop is in Hogsmeade, isn't it? That's close to the school."

Quinn didn't answer she was to afraid of the ramifications. Her shaking fingers set the cupcake down, "he'd find me. You don't know him." She closed her eyes and shuddered, seeing and hearing things that she hadn't heard for months, the nights on whatever Lyric had given her not withstanding. "Sometimes, I wanted what Lyric offered, it's easy to be happy with him, just him, not the drugs. The drugs, they made me remember things....he'll find me."

Concern lined Kane's face, and he set aside his own cupcake to give Quinn his entire focus. "He can't enter school grounds," he assured her. "There's no possible way. You are safe here. The gates won't let a non-student through. If you'd like to stay on the grounds, I can arrange that for you."

It didn't seem possible Quinn thought, to be away from him, to be safe. She let her eyes slide up to Kane's, her hopes raising just a bit. "I can't hide for the rest of my life. I have to live it. I promised Kiley. I promised that I would live for both of us." She gestured to herself, "I haven't been doing very well lately." She let her hair slide over her face, let it tilt downwards, covering her, providing safety, "but safe sounds nice."

"We'll take care of safety first," Kane assured Quinn. "You're a sixth year student, so there's time to get all the details. Hogwarts has a summer program, and you're more than welcome to stay. It also has a kind of... scholarship program, in case payment became an issue." He'd look into her grades at some point, but he knew it wouldn't matter. Headmistress Dumbledore was protective over the students.

Quinn's hands twisted together, "payment shouldn't be an issue, even if... The wand shop is doing really well. I have lots of extra money, and with Lyric getting better, I don't. I mean, I won't be buying concert tickets with it for a while. I've saved a lot of money. The school houses me and feeds me, it's more than I've ever had before." She caught herself as she said the last bit and stopped talking, trailing off as she realized what she might be revealing.
