Ryan led the way out to the lake and sat under one of the trees by the water and looked out at the lake "Nice day today." he said turning to Vannah. He was still torn in his heart debating if he wanted to open up and tell her everything that is going on.

By the time Vannah had gotten to the lake, she had slowed her pace down and controlled her tears. It was a long time ago, She reminded herself, It wasn't your fault. She stood at the edge of the Lake and looked across to a clearing. She fought to push the thoughts that had erupted in her mind away, far far away. When she answered Ryan, her voice still trembled slightly. "Yeah, it is." She said unenthusiastically. Vannah blinked a couple of times and looked at Ryan. Something was definitely bothering him. He didn't usually behave like this. "Ryan, what's wrong?" She asked him for a third time. She wouldn't stop until he answered, it pained her to see him like this.

Ryan sighed, knowing that Vannah wasn't going to give up. He looked up at her, trying to fight back his tears "The one thing that has made me believe in love and destiny my whole life has fallen apart. My parents are getting divorced..." his voice fell off at the end of the sentence as tears started rolling down his face. In a life filled with failed relationships, his parents were the one thing that kept his faith in love, and now that was over.

Vannah took a step closer. Her eyes widened with concern, “Oh baby, I’m so sorry.” She said sympathetically. She couldn’t exactly relate considering her own parents never divorced, but they certainly weren’t happy together. Often enough, Vannah thought it would be a lot easier if they had just gotten a divorce. Guilt swept over Vannah as she realized that she wasn’t much of a help when it came to his beliefs about love. She sat down on the grass across from him. “Do you want to talk about it?” She asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

Ryan started crying harder and leaned into Vannah and laid his head on her shoulder, still crying, not sure what to say, and couldn't get any words out even if he wanted to. There were so many things that he wished he could make different, and one of them was sitting right beside him.

Vannah scooted herself over so she was closer to Ryan. She brought a hand up to his face and began stroking his hair. "They could work it out." Vannah suggested. She had heard of couples that were holding the pens in their hands to sign to papers who had suddenly had a change of heart and reconciled. "It happens, you know! Sometimes people have a change of heart or they get counseling or..." The more Vannah rambled on the easier it was to ignore that nagging guilt she was feeling.

Ryan kept crying, not really hearing what Vannah was saying. He had just got the letter 3 days ago that his mom had moved out, and he had also heard news that his dad was going to have surgery. All this going on and Ryan was stuck half way around the world with seemingly no one. Every time he had tried to have a relationship it fell apart, either because of a mistake he made, or because of some outside reason. As he thought of all this he started crying more.

""Shhh." Vannah said softly. Her hand ran through his soft hair and trailed down his jawline until it cupped his chin. She pulled his chin up slightly. "Ryan, look at me." She said. "Everything will be O.K." She promised. "It could be good that they are taking time apart. They can work it out and maybe, before you know it, they could even get back together!" She tried pointing out again. "It isn't your fault." She said again softly.

Ryan wiped the tears from his eyes, trying to stop crying "To make things worse, my dad is having heart surgery today, and I have no way of being there for him. Everything in my world is crashing all around me."

Vannah bit her lower lip. She didn't know what to say. She looked at his eyes. They were red and wet from the tears he was shedding. Why him? She asked silently. "Not everything." Vannah whispered. "You have friends who care about you very much and you still have school!" She said. It wasn't a strong argument, but at least it was a distraction, if nothing else. Vannah grabed his hand and squeezed it. He had her.

Ryan shook his head "No one at this damn school cares about me anymore. The Prophet has made sure of that. I am all alone, half way around the world from my father who is in the hospital having heart surgery!"

Vannah winced. His words hit her hard. "I'm sorry." She blurted. She missed him, wasn't that part of the reason she came back? But then she had pushed him away, again, too preoccupied with her own emotional baggage. She couldn't blame him for thinking that she didn't care, even if she knew she still did. "The Daily Prophet is rubbish." She said with a bitter laugh. "I bet no one even remembers anything its says after it's out for a week." Vannah fell silent. Maybe he needed to be with his father. "Ryan, have you thought about going home? Just for a short while, I mean. You can make sure your father is alright and you'll have a chance to talk with your mum about things."

Ryan sighed "They won't let me come back. They want me to stay here and stay in school. As for the prophet, I still get looked at every where I go, no matter how long it has been. Every one I get close to abandons me. I have nothing."

"They're only staring because you're so cute." Vannah teased pinching his cheek. It was her poor attempt at making him smile. When it became obvious that it was a poor attempt, her face grew serious. "I never meant to abandon you." She said. She felt like a broken record saying it. No matter how many times it escaped from her lips, it didn't make her feel any better.

Ryan sighed and looked at her "No matter what you meant, you did abandon me. No warning, no explanation, nothing. The love of my life, gone, and I didn't know whether you just left or if you were dead. Now you are back, and it is almost worse, knowing that I can't have you." he finished softly and closed his eyes and curled up and laid his head on his knees.
