Ryan went up to the owlery to send a letter back to his parents. He had just gotten some of the worst news from them recently and wanted to send them a message and see how things were going. Ryan tied the note to his owl and sent him off. He leaned against the window and watched his owl fly off and stayed there thinking things over. After what could have been ages he heard someone come in and he turned around to see her. "Oh, hey Vannah." he said quietly. He wasn't sure if she was the person he most wanted to see right now.

Vannah found her way to the Owlery. It took longer than it should have, but she didn't come up there often and she had gotten lost. She hated being in the Owlery there were so many...owls. Worse, there were so many owl droppings. She hated the smell and the gross feeling that crawled all over her skin when she was in the Owlery.
Vannah had tucked away a letter on the inside of her robes before she left the Common Room. The letter wasn't anything interesting, but one required by her father. He allowed her to return to Hogwarts on the grounds that she check in with him once a week. She scoffed at the very idea. She had been through enough to consider herself ready to make her own decisions, but unfortunately in the Wizarding World she was still technically underaged...even if it was only by a few months.
Vannah reached into her robes and pulled out the letter as soon as she reached the Owlery. A deep voice startled her and her head shot up. The letter slipped out of her hands and onto the ground. "Ryan, you scared me!" She said catching her breath. She bent down and snatched the letter before an owl decided to aim its droppings at it.

Ryan watched as she picked up the letter "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. How are you doing?" he asked softly, trying not to let all of his emotions catch up to him right now.

"I'm fine," Vannah responded. She searched the entire Owlery for her salt-and-pepper looking owl. While she was searching, her eyes swept over Ryan for a moment. He didn't look so great. Actually, he looked like he really didn't want her there. His voice was soft, but there was something else present in it that she couldn't exactly place. "How about you?" She asked. She continued to search for her owl and finally found it perched on the highest stake in the Owlery.

Ryan looked at her and decided to try and not let her on about anything "I am doing OK." he lied as he watched her find her owl and he glanced back out to his owl.

Vannah held her arm out and let her owl land on it. She slid the rope she had tied to the envelope earlier around the owl's ankle. Vannah walked towards the window and let her owl go, watching it for a moment as it flew farther away and became smaller and smaller until it was nothing more than a spec. "I know it's been a while, Ryan, but you never were a good liar." Vannah said. She turned around to face him and leaned against the windowsill. "What's wrong?" She asked for a second time.

Ryan looked at her and sighed "Way too many things going on right now, and they are all crashing together at once to cause a massive pile up of chaos inside of me." he said as he closed his eyes. He wasn't sure if he wanted to tell her what all of the pile up was about at the moment.

Vannah felt bad for him. He certainly wasn't his usual cheery self. What had happened to him? Was it the same reason he was in the Owlery? It could've been any number of things: family, school, friends. He looked way too somber. Vannah wished there was something she could do to make it better for him, then again the latest encounters hadn't been very cordial. That couldn't have helped him too much. Vannah tried to lighten the mood. "Girlfriend trouble, huh?" She teased lightly.

Ryan looked at Vannah and sighed "No girlfriend." he said softly. He knew she was trying to joke around but it wasn't the best thing she could have said at the moment considering everything going on, but she didn't know that he told himself. It's not her fault.

Vannah's smile disappeared. She bit her lower lip as an awkward silence filled the air. She was, however conceited of her to admit, relieved that he had no girlfriend. Her heart sank a little when she heard his voice. She couldn't force him to talk. If he wanted to tell her, he would, she told herself. She lowered her eyes, not sure of what to say next. Should she leave?

Ryan looked at Vannah and wanted to try and break the awkward silence "How have you been? What have you been up to?" he asked trying to change things up.

Vannah lifted her head and arched an eyebrow. She noted the change in subject, but didn't say anything about it. "I've been busy, getting readjusted, you know?" She said without a trace of enthusiasm in her voice. It's been pretty uneventful since she's gotten back to Hogwarts. A lot of the people she used to know were nowhere to be found and it seemed like new cliques were sprouting up at each corner. "How about you? Anything new?"

Ryan shrugged "Nope not really. Just normal boring school." he said. It wasn't fully true, with meeting new people, to getting to know brindle better, to what was happening at home, there was a decent amount knew in his life.

Vannah had a feeling there was something else going on that he wasn't telling her. Why was he acting so strangely? She dropped it, not wanting to press him any farther. "That's not very exciting." She agreed. She played with her necklace, looping it around her pinky finger. She looked up just in time to see a brown owl coming right for her face. "Oh no!" She panicked. She dodged her head just in time for her to avoid being hit by the owl. "Stupid owl..." She muttered.

Ryan ducked out of the way of the owl and looked back at Vannah "Are you ok?" he asked and without noticing it stepped a little closer to her than they had been before the owl came through the window.
