Chase's eyes closed at those quiet words he couldn't help hearing in the quiet of the room. Why didn't it frighten him to hear the words? It made his chest ache, but it didn't frighten him. It fit into the idyllic scene he'd pictured for them somehow. You should be glad I love you this much, she'd said, soft as a breath against his skin. I am, he whispered.

After another few moments, Dru looked up at Chase, pulling her mind from thoughts of a swollen belly. "You have to promise," she said, "That they can marry who they want." She would do this, but she wouldn't let Chase continue the cycle of forcing people to marry people they didn't want to. This was going to be a challenge and a huge trial, but it would help to know that maybe they could change things.

Chase's jaw tightened at Dru's demand, and it was all he could do to keep from giving an immediate no. He wanted to demand that their first son marry a Pureblood to keep up the family name, but he caught the hypocrisy. Still, no one would know that Dru wasn't. He was failing at his duties willingly, but no one had to know. "One of them has to marry a Pureblood," he said. "They can choose, but someone has to carry on the name, Dru. Otherwise connections will be lost, money will be lost, and it will all die." Generations of Firebrands would have sacrificed themselves for nothing.

"But it's all going to be yours, isn't it?" Dru asked. "They can carry on the name just as well with a halfblood as with a pureblood." She didn't see any reason the blood mattered. Not that this was the most pressing matter at hand, but she wanted to know that any children they had wouldn't be pushed into doing things. Besides, this was something to take her mind off of the fact that she was going to willingly be getting....that.

Chase's brows drew tightly together as he tried to organize his thoughts. He searched for some argument that his children would have the same responsibilities that he did, but the argument didn't hold up against what he was already doing.
We'd lose so many connections, he thought. The Firebrands had always sided with whoever was the most powerful, whoever had the most to offer. Sometimes that meant a wealthy halfblood merchant, but more often it meant Society Purebloods, ones with old money and solid connections of their own. How would he replace them? You'll have decades to find out. Assuming his father passed before his children married.
"It depends on how long my father lives," Chase said. "If I won't control them, we'd all be disowned anyway." And unlike Michael's mother, or so the rumors went, his own mother wouldn't be so forgiving. She'd given her life for duty as well.

Even without understanding Dru could feel that that was probably the best she was going to get right now so after a few moments watching Chase she dropped her eyes, and the subject. It would come up again, but there would be years upon years before it was truly an issue. Right now she wanted to relax and get rid of the heavy thoughts that were in her mind. "I'll need some time," she said. Not to make a decision, but to come to terms with it all.

Chase gave a brief nod against the pillow, in full agreement with that sentiment. "We'll have time," he said. If he could find the right person to help, and a suitable background could be found quickly enough, they would have years to sort things. He wished fervently that his father wasn't in such good health. Of course, he'd been wishing that for years.
"We can wait until I've found someone to start," he said, thinking aloud for Dru's benefit. "That'll give you more time." Unless he hadn't found anything by graduation, in which case they'd have to go on anyway. And he needed to start thinking about how he would tell Carolynn when Dru was pregnant. She would need to call off the engagement or risk ruining both of them.

Dru nodded before relaxing back and looking up at the ceiling. Her mind was starting to form ideas, of what their life would be like and what any children would look like or act like. No matter that it was still nearly terrifying to think of, she still thought forward to what it would be like. Her nose wrinkled, "I hope I don't crave peanut butter and pickles or something." She had heard stories of the strange cravings, and had no desire for the same to happen to her.
