Dru looked up at Chase again, "But...but you could say no, if enough of you don't do it then things won't be that way anymore." She couldn't understand why the generations could keep this up when there were people that didn't want to do this. If they just said no and refused, then surely that could change things, couldn't it?

"Everyone's not going to give it up," Chase said, hating the feel of the humorless smile that threatened at his lips. "I'd lose everything." More than the money and power, more than the social standing. He'd never go to a dinner party again, never waltz in a ballroom, never see his father, his mother, or his sister's grave. It would take away part of who he was. "We can have it all this way." His eyes searched hers, that same desperation showing in the simmering crimson of his eyes.

Dru's eyebrows came together before she dropped her eyes. "I always wanted to get married," she whispered. She had, even if it had been pushed to the back of her mind at times. It was rarely a conscious thought, but at the idea of it never happening all the thoughts she had ever had about it rushed through her mind. Her eyes moved up to Chase's again.

Chase's lungs constricted painfully at what he'd seen on Dru's face, at the hopelessness he heard in those few words. He didn't want to see her hurt like this, but what could he do? He wanted her to have everything. He wanted to have everything.
His mind threw crazy ideas at him, and he ran through each one, giving them all more thought than they likely deserved. He ended with two favorites, neither of which sounded plausible, though they were possible. But he didn't know if he could bring them up. Maybe they only sounded sane in his desperation. What if he offended Dru and she left him again?

Dru rested her head against Chase, closing her eyes tightly. Surely there was a way around this, there had to be something. With what little knowledge she had, though, Dru wouldn't be able to think of anything, no matter how hard she tried. Maybe she was just being stupid, she had already agreed to this, hadn't she? Maybe she had no choice but to cling onto what she was given.

Chase rolled around those ideas in his mind, first one, then the other, trying to push himself to say them aloud. She wouldn't agree though, he was sure of it. As intense as they could be together, she was so straightlaced sometimes. Her silence prodded at him, pushing him to act before this all fell apart and she walked out. He took a deep breath, then forced himself to speak.
"I could find someone," he began, choosing his words carefully. ""I could find someone to find you a background. Some obscure family so my father would have to accept you." He looked down at Dru, at her hair again, wishing he could see her face. "You could marry me."

Dru's eyes opened and then blinked at the idea, after a few moments she looked up at Chase. "He'd find out," she said. "I can't pass for a pureblood." She could barely walk in heels, much less convince someone that she belonged in fine robes and huge houses. The idea was amazing, the idea of marrying Chase and getting just what she wanted, but could it really happen?

The rest of that crazy idea whispered furiously to him as he looked at Dru, but he pushed back the desperation that wanted him to say it all at once and tried to pace himself. "It doesn't matter if you're Society," Chase said, though it would matter. Especially when he was already engaged to a woman who would raise the social standing of the Firebrands. "Blood Purity is enough." He breathed in deeply. "If you're carrying my child." It was a risk, a terrible risk, but he knew that with a Pureblood heir on its way, he couldn't be disowned.

The words were shock enough to where it took a couple of moments for Dru to register what Chase had really said. When it hit, her eyes widened and she pulled herself up a little. Was he really saying that? Yes, he was serious, that much she could tell. So now, in addition to claiming to be a pureblood, society or not, she was going to have to get...that. "Are you sure?" she breathed. Was he sure it would work? Was he sure that was what he wanted? Did she even want it?

Everything inside Chase froze, but it had nothing to do with the thought of Dru having his baby. He saw the insecurity in her eyes, and he wondered if he shouldn't take it all back. No, he told himself, you're not giving up so easily.
"I'm sure," he said, his eyes holding hers steadily. "I've been coming to terms for over a year, and I'm ready. It was going to happen, and I want it to happen with you." He'd never pictured her alone with her cats, waiting for him. She'd had their children with her. Not an heir, children. Ones who would be free like she was.

It would mean she could have Chase, that she wouldn't have to share him with some prissy pureblood woman. It also meant having a child so much sooner than she had ever considered, if she had thought about it at all. How had they gone from barely being able to be together more than a couple of hours without fighting to this? Dru chewed her lip for a few long moments before she said anything.
"This will be hard," she said, still unsure. Part of her knew she couldn't say no, but that didn't stop part of her from screaming that she was too young and that she didn't want a kid yet. Who would have thought that it would be Chase trying to get this done?

That wasn't a yes by any stretch of the imagination. It wasn't a no, Chase told himself, but the thought didn't help. "If you don't want to, I can marry her," he said softly. His gaze lifted away from Dru, back toward the far-off ceiling. "When there's an heir, I'll move in with you." It wasn't far from what he'd intended to begin with. The difference would be his primary location, and though everyone would know, he'd have done his duty, and no one would say a word when he arrived at social functions with his wife.

Dru shook her head immediately. "No." It took her a few moments, but in the end she nodded. "I'll do it. If it means keeping you, I'll do it." Keeping him for real, not keeping him and being hidden away for the rest of her life. Her hand slid from its place at Chase's side to play her fingers softly against her stomach, her eyes dropping as she imagined.

Chase let silence settle between them, let Dru have the quiet she needed to think. His gaze dropped, and after a moment's hesitation, his hand dropped as well. A large hand settled over her flat stomach, and his fingers spread as he tried to take the dream into reality. It had been easy to keep distant from the thought of Carolynn being pregnant; it was her duty as much as it was his. But Dru, Dru, who he'd been through so much with—so much for—carrying his child was near overwhelming to think of. And more exciting than he could have imagined. "Just tell me when you're ready," he said softly, his mind half on a son that didn't exist yet. "I'll find someone tomorrow." As long as it all fell into place before the week of the wedding. It had to.

Dru shook her head softly, more at herself than anything else. "How do I get ready for something like this?" she asked softly, followed by a murmured you should be glad I love you this much. Within a year, if things went as planned, she would be married with a baby. The certainty of it made her shiver slightly. This was something that was going to take some getting used to.
