Markise went into pure, unadulterated shock at all that information. Quinn and Brindle were putting on a concert for homosexual rights. Part of him cringed at the phrase, but more of him was stuck on his sister and National Coming Out Day. He would kill Brindle if anyone found out! He blinked and looked away, one hand rising to push lightly at his hair as he caught himself and shoved everything down. If Quinn noticed, he hoped beyond hope she'd think he was a homophobe instead.

Ariel had barely been listening to the conversation, but he was listening well enough to hear homosexual rights and then his head jerked up. He was incredibly glad that he was behind a display and neither of the two talking would be able to see his reaction, which he quickly hid, anyway. And Brindle was doing it. She knew! What if she wanted to get him or Markise in on it? His eyes darkened and he forced himself to start working again, if a little slower, as he focused on listening to what came next.

Quinn noticed a bit of Markise's body language, but wasn't sure why he was acting that way. So she just continued on, "Madison is going to play the guitar, and hopefully if we can convince him, Dare is going to as well. Brindle thinks I should ask Michael to convince him, but I think that be upfront with someone is better than manipulating him to do the work."

Markise ran his hand through his hair again before stuffing his fingers into his pockets to keep from fiddling with it. "I know Dare," he admitted after a minute. He wouldn't look at Quinn though, didn't want to accidentally reveal any of his many confused thoughts about him. "He wouldn't even pick up a guitar for his best friend. Not to impress a girl. Not for anything." That corner of his room by the director's chair had been so empty. "Talking to Michael isn't manipulating, it's seeing if you've got a chance."
Markise hadn't, and just that thought shot a streak of pain through him that he didn't understand. He tried not to think about it, turned his gaze into the shop and forced his attention somewhere else. "Let's get you some clothes," he said, turning and gesturing for Quinn to follow. He wasn't sure where Ariel was working now, but they were heading for women's clothes. "What kind of music?" he asked.

Quinn thought about it, "Madison was talking about indie bands, so I can only assume that she means to play indie songs." She sighed, "sadly I am music illiterate. I'd love to know more, but I just haven't had the exposure." She smiled though, "I'm in charge of harassing shop keepers for donations to support the event." There was a somewhat sly look on her face, "If I spend a months worth of money here on clothes, you think you could pitch in just a little?" She realized she was asking Markise, who she considered a friend, "you don't have to, you're not obligated," Quinn wanted to make sure he knew that.

Markise's brows rose. Did she really have that much money to spend on clothes? Oh, it was tempting. If she spent that much, he could justify giving just a little, but what if someone found out? It would be so bad. And if he did donate a little, even if no one else found out, Ariel would know, and what if that set him into panicking? You don't have to. Markise shook his head. "I don't know," he said. "I'll have to think about it."

Ariel wanted nothing to do with the whole thing. If Markise wanted to donate, he could, but Ariel wasn't going to do anything that could even possibly jeopardize their cover. They could both play their part perfectly; no one would know unless they slipped or really wanted the person to know. He didn't like this girl and he really wished she would leave already.

Quinn nodded "that's fine, I don't need an answer today. Even if you wanted to help out some other way, I just, feel like I should be helping Dare and Michael out. They were nice to me when I came to school, even thought I'm a little bit weird." Markise hadn't figured that one out yet she didn't think, or rather she hoped that he didn't ever, but she did feel like she wanted to help Dare and Michael out. After all Dare had drawn her that amazing picture of herself and Kiley.

Markise didn't think Quinn was any weirder than anyone else, so he didn't comment on that. He had to comment on helping out, though. He couldn't help out, couldn't get involved. He was more or less invisible at Hogwarts, and since that kept him safe, he was okay with it. If he helped out with something this high-profile, people might notice him, and they might wonder, and it might get out. Then Ariel would leave him for sure. He wouldn't have a repeat of Kwami, and he didn't want to lose Ariel, especially not to something that stupid.
"I'll donate," he said at last. "But it has to be anonymous. Totally anonymous." She'd know, so he wouldn't have to feel bad about refusing to help in the least, but he didn't want her telling her friends or spreading it around.

Ariel would have shot a glance at Markise if he could be seen. Surely insisting too hard that it be an anonymous donation would set something off. He didn't know for sure, but it just seemed like it would be suspicious if it was too obvious Markise didn't want anyone to know. He didn't know what would happen if either of them were found out, because if one was, then it would be a short leap to find out the other.

Quinn nodded, she'd grown up in a house that had a don't ask don't tell policy to the world, big or small, no one was to know. So it wasn't weird to her at all that Markise wanted to be anonymous. After all, something like this could come back to haunt people who were straight, pure-blood, muggle born, it didn't matter, hate crossed all boundaries and let no one slip beneath the rug. "Totally confidential. No questions asked." She was so happy that he'd agreed she stepped forward and gave him a quick hug before she realized, and embarrassed and a bit frightened stepped back. Kiley had been the only person she'd ever hugged, or let touch her. Quinn tugged at a few strands of hair and then turned away blushing.

Markise had been surprised by the hug, but he hadn't really thought anything of it. He'd returned her hug, as brief as it had been, and blinked at her back when she turned away. His hand swept a lock of pale blond hair back behind his ear as he tried to guess what that was about. "Are you okay?" he asked, stepping closer.

Quinn looked up not wanting to alienate Markise, "yeah, I'm fine I just...don't hug people very often. It was...different." She blinked her eyes widening hoping he hadn't thought, "not bad, just...I'm not used to it, that's all." She gave a small smile, "I guess that means I trust you," probably a while ago, on the walk to her room, when she'd said the thing about her dad.

Markise stuffed his fingers into his pockets again to keep from toying with his hair, and shifted slightly on his feet instead. He smiled, hopefully encouragingly, and let go of the worries he'd been so focused on a couple minutes ago. Life was too short to be miserable when you didn't have to. "It's fine," he said. "I just have that effect on people," he added lightly.

Ariel just about dropped the shirt he was holding when he heard that they had hugged. Then he realized that it was stupid to feel like that when he knew Markise didn't even begin to like girls. Still, he didn't like imagining him touching anyone. He took a breath and forced images out of his mind that he really didn't want there.
