Dru had stayed long enough to see Dare and Michael leave with bright eyes and broad smiles, then left soon after. She had danced a couple of dances and spoken to a few people she hadn't seen in a while, though she hadn't been able to keep herself from glancing toward the door. She was happy for Michael, she really was, but it was so awkward to be seeing it all when it seemed so certain she would never get to experience it.
Of course, all of it hadn't brought negative thoughts about herself, she had been able to dress up, something she wasn't able to do very much. There had been no one to show off her work to, especially not with Silver there with Anna. Yet another one of her exes taken by Anna. Not that it bothered her, individually, but it was definitely odd how it seemed to happen. So the time spent straightening the front of her hair and pulling it back was wasted, the perfectly arranged curls around her face and hanging from her bun unnoticed. At least she had been able to dress up.

Chase had heard about the so-called ceremony going on that night, but like the majority of the school, he'd had absolutely no interest in checking it out. And Adara was there, so he was on his own tonight. He'd managed to catch a group of Slytherins and a couple Gryffindor guys sneaking down a corridor near the Great Hall and taken the contraband that he could guess their uses for. He didn't have any tender feelings for Michael and thought that the ceremony was a joke, but it was their business, not a group of kids with fanged frisbees and who-knew-what potions.
He was thinking idly of all the things he'd just dropped off with Filch, minus a couple items he thought he could use, when he resumed his patrol of the area of the school nearest the Great Hall. Whatever mischief went on in the rest of the castle he didn't care about tonight. The Headmistress had lifted curfew, and he'd been asked to watch out for students in this area especially. It wasn't like he had anything better to do.
Chase corrected himself when he saw Dru up ahead. His eyes did a slow sweep over her, taking in the way the dress she wore fit, and the way her hair teased against her shoulders and neck. He glanced down the corridor he'd come from, making sure there weren't any witnesses, then widened his steps to catch up, sliding his hand against her hip the moment he was close enough. "You look fantastic," he said.

Dru hadn't registered the steps against the floor, so she jumped slightly when the hand touched her. Then she realized that it was Chase. She smiled, "Thank you." She had worked hard on it, even though she had known that no one would care, but now there was Chase. Although, she hadn't been thinking about it much throughout the ceremony. "We were supposed to dress up for the ceremony." Even dressier than she had seen for other weddings.

"Hm," Chase hummed noncommittally. He had a moment's flickering thought about Dru being so dressed up for her gay ex-boyfriend's whatever-it-was-called, and another flickering thought of the times he'd talked with Michael about her, then dismissed it from his mind entirely.
"You clean up well," he teased. His arm slid further around Dru as he looked her over again. She'd never pass for a Pureblood with Muggle glasses on, but he liked them, perhaps a little more than he'd admit.

"I'd say the same to you but I haven't had the pleasure of seeing you dressed up," Dru said. Other than the Masquerade, she had only ever seen him dressed normally, or dressed a little better a couple of times. Her eyes dropped as she thought of the ceremony again. He was technically engaged to someone, it was something she tried not to think of.

Chase was silent at that. There really weren't reasons to dress up at Hogwarts. He didn't count the masquerade, as much effort as he might have put into his costume. He wanted to promise that she'd see him dressed up some time, but he realized that he couldn't. He couldn't take her to any of the balls, couldn't meet her at one and steal away together while the guests were unaware.
Chase's free hand rose, and he brushed lightly at a curl teasing against the side of Dru's face, trying to think of the right thing to say and failing. Political conversation, flirtation, those came easily, but he didn't know how to handle the rest. Something that had frustrated Dru to no end, which had aggravated Chase as well.

Dru paused as she looked at Chase and then took a deep breath and looked away. She reached up to brush her hair behind her ear out of habit, but her fingers only found a couple of curls. "It was interesting to see Dare's dad and Michael's mom," she said. It had been strange to see the Purebloods, period. They had been so...different from everything she was used to seeing. She raised an eyebrow at Chase, wondering how similar he was when away from school.

Chase didn't follow Dru's train of thought. He knew that Michael was Pureblood, but knew little to nothing about Dare. He was gay guy with colored hair, and that was enough. Why Dru would find Dare's dad and Michael's mom interesting was beyond him. "Do you know them or something?" he asked. She wasn't looking at him, so he looked at her, at the care she'd put into her appearance for her ex's Civil Ceremony, or whatever it was called out here.

"No," Dru said, shaking her head. "They're both higher ups, Purebloods," she explained, then looked up at Chase again. Did he dress like those two had? Or even like the other two, Michael's best man and his friend, who both had looked like they came from the same ranking as the parents had. She was very interested in seeing Chase like that, but if she had thought about it, she probably would have realized she never would get to.

It took Chase a moment to realize why that would be interesting. He was surprised that Dare's father, though apparently not his mother since she hadn't been mentioned, was Pureblood. He'd never even heard of the Blackwoods. But Dru was interested. He couldn't help thinking back to her reactions to the times he'd brought her to the Room of Requirement. She hadn't been able to accept that there was anything that would make that lifestyle less than utopian. And Anna had reacted much the same.
"What was it that interested you?" Chase asked after a moment.

Dru shrugged, "You know, the way they acted. I mean...I've never seen robes so nice, or people so comfortable in them." She had only ever read about things like that, the closest she had ever come was dances at school and the ceremony. And they had to have grown up wearing robes like that, she could barely stand a couple of hours in them, much less seem so at ease.

Chase inclined his head slightly in acceptance, though it was, after all this time, still difficult to picture a life without privilege. He wondered what it was about the way they acted that had Dru interested, but though he was curious, he saw no reason to drag information out of her. She was giving him brief responses as opposed to the lengthy speeches he'd heard at times, so perhaps it wasn't something she wanted to pursue.

He hadn't said anything. Dru chewed her lip and looked up at him again, taking a deep breath. "I mean, they're from a different world. Well...for me, anyway, I guess it'd be normal for you." It was weird to think that it was normal for him. "They waltzed, just like it was completely normal." At least...she was pretty certain it was a waltz. She had only ever seen pictures, and maybe an old video clip of it on a tv somewhere. "And some other weird, fast dance that I didn't recognize."

He could make a guess at the other dance if there were Purebloods there, and they'd waltzed as well. Yes, it was unsurprising for him to hear of it, but his mind was searching for a connection between what Dru had said and anything he could do. "Do you want to waltz?" Chase asked. Dru had gone on and had shown interest, and though he couldn't produce formal robes for her, waltzing was easy. It was something he could give her if she wanted it.

Dru had dropped her eyes to her hands while talking, trying to visualize the other dance, but when Chase spoke her eyes turned up to his. "I..." she started, but stopped at the idea. She dropped her eyes and gave a small shrug and a smile. "I don't know how good I'd be," she said. The only dancing she had ever really done was with Chase and what little she had done at the Masquerade and the reception. None of that was anywhere near a waltz.
