Markise had just checked in with Ariel, who was on his way elsewhere now, though Markise himself had opted to stay outside. The grounds were enormous, and the chances of running into anyone, whether Brindle, Dare, or even Michael, were a lot slimmer out here. He hoped.
Either way, for now he was lying stomach-down on the grass with a good view of the water and a textbook open in front of him. He hated writing essays, but there wasn't all that much time between check-ins with Ariel, so it wasn't as though he'd be taxing himself too much. Still, he sucked lightly at the end of his sugar quill for inspiration. Who cared how Hengist helped King Vortigern defeat Scottish rebels? As far as he could tell, they were all Muggles.

Ivy was still learning her way around the school, but right now that wasn't her primary concern. She needed to get to know some people, and so far she hadn't meet anyone. The school was supposed to have thousands of people on it, where were they all at? She supposed part of that could be that they were holed up studying for exams, but she didn't feel like she had much to worry about in that area. Of course, not knowing anyone and not knowing how to get around was great for finding someone.
When she saw the...was it a girl? Laying on the grass, she paused a moment. So far she hadn't thought much about strategy, so she wasn't sure how much to reveal right off the bat and how much to keep quiet about just yet. She learned better as she went, not by studying and planning out things beforehand. After her brief pause, she moved toward the figure on the grass. "Excuse me?" she asked, using the best innocent face she had perfected during long visits to relatives she had to pretend to like. "I'm new and...can I ask you some things?"

Markise blinked and lifted pale blue eyes to the person addressing him. He blinked again. At the moment, he could almost understand why people stared when they couldn't decide his gender. Almost. He could control himself, at least.
"Sure," Markise said. He closed up his book and tucked everything away into his book bag, then moved to sit. If the... new person didn't sit, he'd stand, but he couldn't handle being towered over like that. Not when he was lying down. He gestured—this was terrible, he was going to assign a gender at least in his mind—for him to sit, too. "It's late in the year to be new," he pointed out.

"I know," Ivy said as she sat down. "I'm staying for the summer and I was kind of hoping I'd get the chance to meet up with someone before the end of school, I don't know if he's staying or not." There, that seemed like an entirely plausible answer, didn't it? "And I'll be here next year." She eyed the person in front of her, and, through instinct more than anything, tentatively decided the person was a boy.
From where she could see, the jaw was too...but then, she didn't exactly have a delicate jawline, either. Her eyebrows came together momentarily before she reached out a hand to shake, "I'm Ivy, they put me in Slytherin." She hadn't been able to believe it when the stupid hat said Slytherin, but now she saw it as an advantage. He was a Slytherin. Even if the paper said he didn't go there anymore, she had a better chance of meeting someone that knew him.

Ivy. Markise had never heard of a boy named Ivy, so he did a mental check as he took her hand. "Markise," he replied, looking at her again now. He'd seen that moment of indecision that he knew so well, but there was enough going on in his mind that he paid little attention to it. She was in Slytherin. So far, they hadn't been as bad as he'd been told, but the ones he'd met were pretty two-faced. There was Michael, who couldn't decide if he was a badass or a wuss, Larten who'd pretended the same thing, then acted like a complete romantic until he'd started ditching Markise, and Lucretia, who seemed to have so much darkness behind her friendly expressions.
"Who are you looking for?" Markise asked as he retrieved his hand. "I haven't been here forever, but I know a few people."

Ivy looked down at her hands and messed absently with her fingernails. "Um, Michael Hardt? I don't know how many people know him around here..." She figured a lot of people knew of him, but she had no idea how social he was. Of course, as far as she knew he shouldn't even still be in school, considering he was the same age as her sister would have been. She looked up at Markise hopefully.

Markise was glad Ivy hadn't been looking up at him when she'd first said Michael's name. He was crap at hiding his emotions, and at hearing the name, he'd had a momentary flicker of so many things they must have shown. He was still angry and hurt for that long conversation they'd had, and the strong tie to Ariel didn't help. He was still angry and hurt over Dare, still edgy about the last time they'd seen each other. He looked away from Ivy, out over the lake. "A lot of people know him," he said.

"Really?" Ivy asked, looking up at Markise. "That's good, I guess." It meant that it shouldn't be hard to find him. "He dated my older sister a few years ago," she said, keeping her gaze on Markise now. How much of Michael's past was common knowledge? She knew that it was known that he used to be a Death Eater, but did anyone know what had happened around that time? Did they know that he apparently had never even gotten in trouble for what he had done?

Markise looked aside at Ivy only to see her watching him, and only just kept himself from looking immediately away again. "So why are you looking for him?" he asked. He couldn't imagine Brindle hunting down Kwami for a chat, and he had no clue what had happened between Michael and Ivy's sister, nor did he want to know, but why would anyone hunt down their siblings' ex? It didn't immediately occur to Markise that she'd said a few years ago, and that Michael had left the Death Eaters two years ago. When he thought about Michael's Death Eater past, it was usually wondering how he could be such a spineless wimp.

"Because she dated him before she joined the Death Eaters, and then she died the night he joined." At least, that was what she had been able to figure out. It wasn't hard to believe, her sister had been found dead and someone had confessed to knowing when he joined. They had said a lot, actually, but none of it had gone noticed by the higher ups that refused to believe someone as young as Michael had been could do anything. The thought of her sister's death still stung, but she was able to talk about it now and keep a clear head.

Markise blinked in surprise. "You don't think he killed her, do you?" he asked. He couldn't imagine it. He had a sudden flash of Michael chasing him through the corridors shooting spells at him and looked away. "I can't see it," he said. He thought that if Michael had really wanted to hurt him, he'd have done it, but the next time he'd seen him, Michael had been apologetic and asking for his help. That didn't entirely erase his nerves from that uncomfortable flashback, but Markise had gotten what he'd wanted. Apparently Michael had done something that day.

"I don't think he killed her, not with his wand, anyway. But if she had never dated him then she'd still be here. Besides, I've heard things about what he's done, and he never even got punished for it!" And that was the injustice of it all! Other people that had done far lesser crimes were send to jail or prison and there Michael was walking free! And he was engaged.

Markise glanced aside at Ivy before returning his gaze to the water. He didn't have any clue what Michael had done, only what Dare had told him. "All I know is he turned himself in a couple years ago and hasn't done anything since." He paused at another thought and looked at Ivy again. "His dad tried to get him to join again in November and when he wouldn't, he tried to kill him." That wasn't public information, and Markise didn't really like Michael, but he didn't think he needed punished for things he'd done that long ago. "I think almost bleeding to death for doing the right thing is punishment." Why in hell was he defending Michael? Because Dare loves him, and you're a doormat, he answered himself.

Ivy snorted and shook her head. "No, he deserves to be locked up, just like all the rest of them. Just because he's good now doesn't mean everything he did was erased. I mean, I can't tell you exactly what he did, but I do know how bad his father was, Soren Hardt was one of the top on the list of members to catch, according to my parents. And even he didn't get punished for what he did." How did all these people get away with what they did? It didn't make any sense to her. Just because someone supposedly turned their life around didn't mean they were free from blame.

Markise thought that was a bit of a fanatical way to look at things, but decided not to say so directly. He also decided he had a good idea why she'd been put into Slytherin. "So someone who wants to change shouldn't be allowed to? They should be punished anyway?" Markise had a flickering thought about Ariel, but shoved it away. That was completely different. "That'd be a pretty bad example for anyone else who realized they were wrong."
