"I'm not saying they shouldn't change," Ivy said, "I'm saying that they deserve to get something for what they did. They can change afterward." She looked away from Markise. "If they've been to that side of the road before, I don't think they can really change." They could act, they could put on a face and make everyone think they were different. In the end, they were the same as they had been before, it only took a little bit of stimulation.

Markise obviously wasn't convinced. He looked at Ivy like she had no idea what she was talking about. "Michael Hardt is a complete emo wimp who's afraid of conflict," he said. "I've seen him lose his temper once, and he apologized for it." It hadn't seemed to be the most genuine apology, but this girl seemed to think Michael belonged in Azkaban, and as little as Markise liked him, he thought that was way overboard. What could Michael have done in the Deatheaters? For apparently a year.

"Tell that to all the reports my parents brought home that had his and Soren's name on it. And as far as I know, he's a good liar, he had my sister completely fooled, and look at what happened to her." How could Markise be saying that Michael didn't deserve anything? Michael should be, at least, getting out of prison right now, not living in Diagon Alley with his fiance.

"I don't believe it," Markise said firmly. "I don't even like him, and I don't believe it. From what I've heard, it was all his dad anyway and he didn't want to do it in the first place." Or the second place. Markise knew that this girl probably knew more than him, but he trusted the bits Dare had told him more than a girl who was, understandably, pissed over her sister's death. "No one's that good a liar, and I've known some damn good liars." His mind started listing them off, despite the fact that he'd rather not think about any of them.

"I can't believe you're sticking up for a Death Eater," Ivy said, wrinkling her nose. "Even if he is like you say he is now, that doesn't change everything that he did." She wanted to see him pay for what he had done. She only wished she had been able to come after him sooner. Why did she have to be so young? It drove her insane, but she hoped that she could figure out something to do. Hopefully she could even get someone else on her side.

"I can't believe you want to shove someone who quit years ago into Azkaban," Markise retorted. "He'd probably come out just as horrible as you think he is now." And it would break Dare. "That'd ruin more lives than his. I'm sorry about your sister and I think it's horrible, but I don't think punishing him would do anyone any good." If Dare broke, it would break him. If he broke, Ariel would, Markise couldn't imagine any other outcome.

"What if it was someone you didn't know?" Ivy asked. "What if they put a murderer in the paper that claimed to be sorry for it, don't you think that person would deserve to be punished? Or what if someone you loved was hurt by someone else, would you let them just get off free because they started acting nice?" Her thoughts were completely logical, there was no reason someone that had done all those things should be completely free.

"The difference is that I do know Michael, and I do know he's not like that. I don't know how he was, I didn't know him then, but I'm not gonna agree with you. If he was just saying it, I'd have seen something by now. Hell, he'd have killed me by now, but he hasn't and he won't. I don't know anyone who would say he deserves it. Go talk to Dru sometime. She works at the club in Hogsmeade." Dru was another of Michael's ex girlfriends. Maybe she could talk some sense into Ivy.

"Why should it be any different just because you know him?" Ivy insisted. "That's a bias, there's no reason he should get special treatment just because you know him. He didn't get his own then, it's just long overdue." She filed away Dru's name to go after her. She wanted to talk to others, to try to find someone that didn't think Death Eaters should walk free just because they said sorry.

"It's different because I know he's not dangerous!" Markise said. "I didn't say you weren't allowed to have your own opinion, but I'm not gonna agree with you. I haven't seen or heard of him doing anything any other guy wouldn't do, except maybe protecting other students from Slytherins with violent tendencies." Most guys wouldn't do that, but Michael had done it for him more than once. For Dare really, but still, he didn't have to.

Ivy glared at Markise and then looked sharply away. She still couldn't believe that someone was sticking up for Michael. It was completely ridiculous. But did Markise say that Michael was protecting other students? That was so hard to believe! He was the reason she didn't have an older sister, he was the reason her family had fallen apart. She sat silently glaring out over the water.

Markise felt a sense of smug satisfaction that Ivy hadn't been able to argue at that. "People do change," he pointed out after a minute, his voice calmed now. "I heard he used to be straight." He hoped Ivy could see his point. Michael had gone out with her sister. Apparently Dare was Michael's first and only guy, not that he could blame him. Markise pouted inwardly.

Ivy sniffed. "That's not nearly on the same level as being a Death Eater and using Unforgivables." They were called that for a reason, anyway. And for all she knew, he could be using that as a coverup, and no one knew if he really hadn't liked guys before. It was widespread to like both genders, whether that was something she was used to or not.

Markise was uncomfortable with the idea that Michael might have ever used an Unforgivable, so he pushed it aside. They were unforgivable. He decided that Michael must not have, if Dare was so okay with him that he'd propose. "I don't know what to say, then. I know him, he helps people," after he stops being chicken over it, he thought, though that seemed to only be when Dare was involved. "If you're hoping for revenge, don't expect any help." As a matter of fact, Markise would go tell Dare and hope Dare didn't ask where he'd been hiding. If there was some vigilante Slytherin after Michael, they might as well know.

Ivy shook her head and then pushed herself up, "Fine, then," she said, dusting off her jeans. "I don't want to deal with someone like you that thinks it's just fine for those people to walk around." She wasn't going to sit there any more and argue with someone that obviously wasn't going to help her. She wouldn't even be seeking help if she knew she could take Michael by herself or that she could present a good argument by herself. She needed other people that thought like her to get anything done.
