Shock ran through him in the moment where his muscles froze before Ariel could return the kiss. The kiss. It seemed like years since he had kissed Markise. He immediately felt dirty for it. How could he not, when he had been doing what he had? He didn't stop the kiss, though, it felt too good to stop. His arm tightened at Markise's waist as his lips parted in unspoken question.

Yes. This was what Markise wanted; no thought, no pain, no worries, only pleasure and a connection that existed no matter how either of them had fought against it. He didn't think, but sighed softly and let his tongue slip against Ariel's lips. His mind was a blank as he deepened the kiss, everything in him focused on that, and for the moment, nothing else.

The dirty feeling was easily repressed when Ariel met Markise's tongue and he took the deepening of the kiss and continued it. He didn't expect anything else, didn't want anything else, and so the kiss didn't gain the desperate level their kisses had once had nearly every time. He refused to think that part of that might be because he had experience now where he had been frantic before at the new experience.

Markise had loved that about being with Ariel, the desperation that he hadn't found anywhere else. He didn't expect it this time, though. That wasn't what he'd been looking for. He didn't need to forget because his mind was too exhausted to think. He just wanted to kiss Ariel, without any expectations, something he wouldn't feel guilty for later. His hand slipped back and up into Ariel's hair, drawing another low sigh from him. He'd wanted so badly to touch Ariel's hair.

Ariel turned slightly toward Markise, his hand leaving the one at his leg and moving to Markise's hair as though to show his appreciation for the hand in his own. He had missed this, missed everything with Markise. It was so strange to be kissing without any thoughts of something coming of it, something he wasn't used to, but it didn't feel wrong. He liked it, and his hand at Markise's waist spread to hold him better.

Markise made a soft noise of pleasure at the feel of Ariel's hand in his hair, and shifted slightly toward him. One hand reveled in Ariel's thick hair as the other rose, settling lightly at his stomach. He left the distance of the shirt between them, knowing even without thought that this couldn't get out of hand. He wanted to touch, though. He wanted to remember, and he let his fingers trace muscles he hadn't forgotten.

Ariel's eyebrows came together and he let out an almost pained breath at the feel of that hand against him, even through the fabric. He threaded his fingers through Markise's hair, which was so much softer than he remembered it being. The feeling of being dirty was gone completely and he sighed again as he moved his other hand over Markise's side.

Markise hummed with pleasure, and his brows knitted slightly as he deepened the kiss. The reflexes he'd had to lead when Ariel had faltered trickled back, and he led with the motions of his hands and mouth, letting Ariel know it was okay to touch. Nothing more would happen in a corridor, deserted or not, and Markise let that be the guideline.
When the kiss drew to an end, Markise couldn't pull back more than a breath. His lashes fluttered open, gold showing where black had rinsed away. His hand at Ariel's chest rose, lightly touching that cut jawline. He tried to speak, but for now, no words would come.

Ariel ran his hand slowly through Markise's hair while his eyes were still closed before finally pulling his eyelids up to meet Markise's eyes. He moved his hand through Markise's hair one more time before dropping his arm to wrap lightly around Markise's waist along with his other arm. His eyes ran over Markise's face, hovering on the strangely pale eyelashes before finally meeting the amazing blue again. He didn't know what to say.

I'm half in love with you. The words wanted to come out, inappropriate as they were. He wasn't in love with Ariel, but he could have been so easily, and it was all still there, hibernating whenever he thought it had faded. He hadn't forgotten what he'd said at the club that first night he'd seen Ariel again. He'd meant it, but he couldn't bring himself to bring it up now. It wouldn't be right, not when they couldn't be together. "I missed you," he managed. Ariel had to have guessed after a kiss like that.

Ariel held Markise's eyes for barely a moment more before his own dropped. He felt dirty again. "I missed you, too," he said softly, almost afraid his voice was going to break. It wasn't right for him to let this happen, not with what he had been doing, not when he knew it couldn't continue. "I missed you a lot,," he said, even softer.

Markise's breath caught at the words, his precarious emotional state leaving him even more vulnerable than usual. His brows drew slightly together again before the light pressure of his hand asked Ariel to lift his chin. Then he pressed another soft kiss to Ariel's lips. He wasn't going to regret this, not by any means. He refused to allow it. He was just taking comfort where he could.

Ariel returned the light kiss. Why couldn't he resist? Why wasn't he strong enough to refuse? But Markise needed him to accept. No, that was a lie, and he knew it, it was lying to himself. He wanted the kiss, even if he couldn't shake the feeling of being dirty now that it had come back. He broke the kiss. "Tell me you don't want me back," he pleaded softly, eyes closed. If Markise would just say that, then maybe it wouldn't be so hard.

Markise's breath caught again, and for a moment he couldn't speak at all. He looked at Ariel, and he could feel the pain, but he couldn't say the words. "I can't take you back," he whispered instead. He wanted Ariel, even if there was so much he couldn't accept or tolerate. He wanted him, wanted this, wanted it to be more, but he couldn't. He'd lose himself entirely then. He'd hate himself.

It hurt to hear it, it hurt to know that there wasn't the option, but it also was a way to let himself relax and know that it wasn't expected. Ariel still hoped that some day there would be another chance, even if he knew how ridiculous it was to hope. He looped his arms further around Markise and lightly nuzzled against Markise's cheek with his own. It wasn't exactly what he had asked to hear, but it was enough. Someday, he told himself, someday I can stop.
