It seemed like the lake was a popular place to hang out, even with the weather having cooled. Brindle saw people she knew and people she didn't gathered in groups or couples, or all alone watching the water. Luckily, the lake was plenty big enough that she could find a spot of her own and pretend the world didn't exist for a while.
She had no specific desire for the world to disappear. Brindle had always liked people enough, but the past months, more or less since Dare had left California for England, had been insanity.
Brindle stopped at a nice clearing between some trees, their branches bare now. She adjusted her coat with fingerless-gloved hands, then set to beginning her routine with slow movements of her arms. Her martial Arts instructor said she was a natural.

Deimos was walking around the fringes of the lake. He liked to take a lap every once in a while to jog and keep in shape. After all, looking good was a great way to attract the ladies. Also, it got his sister away from him. He loved her, but y'know, there's only so much a guy can take. Especially when it comes to sisters. He was supposed to be the one that was overprotective. But she knew him too well to not be overprotective of him as well.
He unzipped the jogging jacket he had on, revealing the white muscle shirt he had on underneath. Sweat was dripping off the ends of his messy wavy brown hair and into his jade green eyes. He shook his head, sending droplets of water and salt every where, then ran a hand through his hair, messing it up appropriately. Eirene was always fussing at him for messing his hair up so much. He rolled his eyes and huffed as he began to jog again.
He was coming up on his clearing that he usually took a break in to watch the lake and catch his breath. He sped up slightly, anxious to sit down and stretch out a little before he cooled down too much more.

Brindle was deep in concentration, the part of this that she had the most difficulty with. She could keep the movements, but her mind would go wandering, usually to the reason she had started this in the first place; her brother.
He was doing fine now. She knew because she talked to him about every day. She wanted to make sure he wasn't having any trouble with people, make sure no one was pushing him around. He insisted that he didn't need her protection, but after what had happened at their last school, she was determined to be prepared.
It took her a while to hear the crunch of shoes through fallen leaves. Normally, Brindle would continue, letting whoever it was pass by, but she'd just begun and her concentration was shot before she'd even gotten it settled. She sighed heavily, then turned to look at whoever it was, her brows rising slightly at the sight of him. She didn't say anything, though. He'd likely continue the way he was coming and jog right by.

Deimos trotted into the clearing, exhaled hugely, and dropped his hands to his knees with his face towards the ground, eyes closed. He then, fell to the ground onto his butt and inhaled and exhaled.
He opened his eyes, then twitched with surprise. "Oh! Sorry, didn't realize you were here. I'll leave."
He stood up to his lanky height of 6'3 and made as if to go.

Brindle had nearly laughed at the the guy's posterior landing, but she'd managed to hold it back to a small smile and glittering eyes. That was, until he looked up at her. He was gorgeous. Brindle glanced down the path he'd come from, almost expecting to see another guy coming after him. It seemed like all the attractive guys at this school were gay.
She looked back at the boy, though. He really was gorgeous. And when he stood, she couldn't help noticing how tall he was, even taller than Dare. Her eyes might have widened just a bit. "You don't have to go," Brindle said, part of her hoping he'd stay. Yes, she had just started her routine, but for the time she'd been at this school, she hardly knew anyone.

He paused in mid-step. He glanced at her over his shoulder. "You sure?"
He shrugged and went ahead and sat back down. "Whoo! That was some run. Mind If I ask what you were doing?"
As he asked her, he took in her appearance. She looked kinda punk-like, but she was really quite cute. She had really blue eyes. Very blue eyes. Very pretty blue eyes. He blinked and shook his head, scattering some more sweat. Stop staring at eyes! Bad Deimos, bad! That was another thing that his sister always fussed at him about too.

Brindle struck a pose, arms up and at the ready, feet parted. "Martial Arts!" she answered, in just such a way that it could be laughed off. She didn't expect to be taken seriously, considering no one ever had. Her brother did, but even he tried to watch over her. "It's just... something I do." A lot of wizards didn't even know what Martial Arts were, and of those who did, most of them thought it was a joke, like her father. What good is throwing your arms and legs around when you've got a wand?

Deimos gave a laugh. "Really? That's something I've definitely always been interested in. I read about it in a book once. I thought it was a very awesome concept. My sister agrees. She thinks it would be fascinating to learn how to center yourself like that and be with the universe."
Deimos paused, then placed his fingers to his temples. "Although God knows that she just needs to learn how to be not a klutz in general."
He glanced up at Brindle, then realized he didn't know her name. "Oh, I'm being rude. I'm Deimos Auten. Call me Dei, if you want."

Brindle blinked at the boy. He was interested in Martial Arts. She almost didn't hear what he said about his sister. She mentally shook off her surprise to listen to the rest, and smiled at his nickname. "Nice to meet you, Dei," she said, eyes sparkling. Dei, as in God. She stepped closer and offered him her hand before she'd even thought about the fact that he was not only huge, but gorgeous and sweaty. She didn't retreat though, but brazened through. "I'm Brindle Sterling, but my friends call me Brin half the time. Your nickname's a little ... high-reaching, don't you think?" she teased.

He smirked. "Well, I certainly didn't nickname myself that. That came from one of the other girls back home. They must have seen something before I did. Kinda fits, though, huh?"
Because you're so tall! He could almost hear Eirene's voice ringing in his ear. She was a full foot shorter than him.
He took her hand and shook it, wondering at the small size of her hands. Then he saw her sparkling eyes and resisted the urge to look at them again. "It's very nice to meet you, Brin."

Brindle rolled her eyes at Dei's attempt--she decided she liked that nickname, at least as a tease. She wasn't sure if he was teasing, though. She chuckled all the same, but the sound faded as her hand was swallowed in his. It was all she could do to give him a surprisingly firm shake, when she wanted to melt into a puddle. He was so tall. She'd always had a thing for tall guys, possibly because of her own height, or possibly because of Dare, not that it mattered.
It took her a moment or two to gather her train of thought enough to speak again. "So, where are you from?" she asked, just a little breathlessly. She hoped he didn't notice. She didn't want to let go of his hand, even if it was affecting her, but all the same, she did want to let go, if only to get her composure back. Yet another thing that didn't matter. She was more or less trapped. Unless he got fresh.

Deimos held her hand for a split second longer, then, slightly reluctantly, released it. "I'm from America. North Carolina, actually."
He ran his hand through his hair again and added, "But, we've been living everywhere, which is why I will have the most random accents at time. For example...."
He winked one jade green eye, "Howdy do, li'l lady. How are you on this mihtee fihne day?"

Brindle's hand had curled in on itself at the loss of the heat of Deimos's hand, though it was so large she could almost think of it as a paw. She suddenly wished she'd had her fingerless glove off, so she could have touched him more directly.
And then came that heart-stopping wink and those teasing words. Brindle laughed, her vivid blue eyes sparkling again, and her nerves rushing out with that release. "And all I've got is New York and California," Brindle said.

Deimos' grin widened. He liked the sound of her laugh and the way her eyes lit up as she did so. Tension seemed to run out of her too, making her a lot more relaxed. Her posture was much more receptive.
"I've been there once or twice- both places- but not ever lived there. Are they nice places to live?" He sat back down on the ground and patted the piece of mottled green and brown grass beside him invitingly.

Brindle adamantly refused to blush as she sat down next to him, still highly aware of his height, and now of his presence beside her. She shrugged at his question. "I didn't actually live in California, just went to school there. And I didn't really care about New York until I got here." Brindle looked up at Dei from beneath her lashes so she didn't have to crane her neck so far. "No offense if you like this place, I'm just... used to having more to do." More company, she added silently.
