Dei decided right away that he really liked the way she looked up at him from beneath her lashes. It was really quite attractive. Plus, there was the way that the light was illuminating her blue eyes....
He gave a soft chuckle. "No, that's fine. I understand. I always feel really odd going from urban to rural to urban to rural places. Kinda throws a guy off, y'know?"
He had to roll his eyes as he thought of his sister. "Rene, on the other hand- give her a book and she's good. She likes people, but books are a lot nicer to her."

"Sounds like Silver," Brindle said. "He's a friend of mine. Him and his brother transferred out here last spring. I don't think Silver even notices the change when he's got a book. Is Rene your sister?" Brindle nearly grimaced at the bluntness of her question, but she hoped it wasn't his girlfriend. He'd mentioned his sister a couple times, so that was a reasonable guess. Not that Brindle's actions would be any different if he did have a girlfriend, at least she didn't think so. She wasn't a natural flirt like her brother.

He muttered, "Sounds like the two of them would get along splendidly, then. And yes, Rene is Eirene, my twin sister."
He wondered vaguely why she was asking him. Surely she wasn't wondering if he had a girlfriend....? He smirked to himself. Perhaps. This could certainly be interesting. "Well, what about you? Do you have any siblings?"

He had a twin sister? Brindle wondered if she was as tall as he was, and boggled at the thought. Even so, that thought was pushed out of her mind at his question, one with an easy answer as long as she skipped the details. "I have an older brother, Markise. That's it, just the two of us." People said that if they stood side by side they looked just alike, but Brindle didn't go for it. Their eyes weren't even the same color. His were pale blue, hers vivid. Then there was the fact that, as feminine as his face might be, he was still a guy. Of course, people in general were idiots. "Do you just have Eirene?" Brindle asked.

Dei shook his head. "No. I also have an older brother and a younger sister."
He preferred to think that he and Eirene didn't look that alike. He thought that he and Proteus looked far more alike. He didn't really want to think that he may possibly be considered feminine. Which, of course, couldn't be possible.
He suddenly remembered, "Oh! And speaking of siblings, I have to go meet Eirene soon. She needs me to help her with some arithmancy homework."
However, he definitely didn't want to go and leave Brindle..... She was quite interesting.

"Oh," Brindle said, dropping her gaze from Dei to look out over the lake. She was disappointed, but she didn't want to be a hanger-on, and if he wasn't interested... well, she'd just add him to her list of unrequited crushes. She should be used to it by now.
"So you're pretty good with arithmancy?" she asked, instead of how long before he'd have to go. Brindle didn't know enough about arithmancy to have any real interest in it. She got the general idea, or at least she thought she did, but nothing more than that. "I haven't taken that one."

Dei chuckled. "I'm the best one in that class. I'm in Ravenclaw, so...."
He didn't mean to sound like he was bragging, so he trailed off, then latched onto the latter part of her response. "You haven't taken it? If you ever decide to, let me know, I'd be more than happy to help you out!"
He winced inwardly. Hopefully, he hadn't sounded a little too eager to offer his help with her.

Brindle smiled at his offer, tucking it away for later. Maybe she would take Arithmancy next term. "So if you're a Ravenclaw, then you're probably good at a lot of your classes," she suggested. She knew that Silver was, at least, and since that was the only Ravenclaw she knew--at least, before Dei--she didn't have much to go by.
"I've been looking for help in Charms," she went on. "My other school seemed to think that theory was enough. There wasn't a dueling club or anything." Which only made her wonder all the more how that group of boys had managed what they'd done to her brother. "I'm not much for jinxes or hexes, either." No, anything that involved directly using a wand had been more or less taboo at SWIM, at least, the way Brindle saw it.. A simple jinx in the hallway meant detention, not that Brin's friends had known jinxes in the first place.

"Oh, I'm only good in some stuff. Rene is good at all the other stuff." Dei waved it off. Then he added, "Charms? I may be able to help you there. If I can't, then Rene can. Or I'll get help from her so I can help you."
He grinned, then asked, "Where was your other school at if they thought that just theory was good enough? That doesn't seem too practical."
He had always gone to Hogwarts, though there had been that momentary panic when it had looked like they might move to America a few years back. At the moment, he was quite glad that they hadn't.

"Not at all," Brindle affirmed. The attack had been more than enough to prove that. "Me and my brother went to the SouthWest Institute of Magic--we call it SWIM--in Southern California. The administration seemed to think that with You-Know-Who gone, there wasn't any reason for us to practice things like that. I think I heard something about the war being centered in England anyway, so I guess they figured it just wasn't important." But it was important, especially when you pitted a group of unscrupulous people who'd learned the spells elsewhere against one person who hadn't. But that was neither here nor there, and Brindle wouldn't let herself dwell on it.

"SWIM? In Southern California?" Dei's lips twitched into a grin again. "That's quite appropriate."
Something seemed to be bothering her. Bad memories of this school, perhaps? He shrugged mentally- it wasn't his place to ask yet. Perhaps if they were to get to know each other a little bit better..... That would be quite nice. Very nice, in fact.
"Well, one can't deny the facts. I know I hardly heard anything about America the whole time that the war was going on." He shook his head again, "However, that still doesn't stand for common sense that eventually one will use these spells. Therefore, practicing would be the best thing to do. But, sometimes people are just bloody stupid."
He stood and wiped off his sweatpants. "Well, how would you like to go to the Great Hall with me? We could grab something to eat before I have to help Rene."
He extended his hand to her in an gesture of courtesy.

Brindle did not blush. Blushing was for silly pre-teens and those girls who were so boy crazy that they couldn't concentrate on breathing half the time. The heat in her cheeks and across the back of her neck was imagined, she was sure of it, and he wouldn't see a soft shade of rose there. Even if he did.
Brin looked at Dei for just a moment before lifting her hand to let him help her up. Did guys even do that anymore? And why was it that she didn't feel at all condescended to?
She tried to shake those thoughts off, turning her mind back to his question. "I'd love to go with you," she said, before she'd had a chance to censor her words. And dammit, her voice had not gone breathy, especially not the way Markise's did when he was flirting.

Dei smothered the smile that tried to spread across his face at her breathy voice and blush. He would pretend not to notice it and it would hopefully keep her happy.
He easily lifted her- she didn't weigh much more than Rene. They were almost equal, actually, in weight and height.... Brin was slightly taller, though. He did give her a small smile at her acceptance. "Great! Let's go, then."
He motioned for her to take the lead back to the school with a slight bow and a mischievous grin.

Brindle couldn't help smiling back at Dei, even if his smile... why did it send a trickle of electricity up the back of her neck? Still, if he wanted her to go ahead of him, she might as well, right? She looked at him just once more from beneath her lashes, cursing her sudden and bizarre streak of self-consciousness, then headed up the path.

Dei told himself that he definitely didn't just hear his heart stop for a split second when she looked up at him from under her lashes again.
Rather than paying attention to the rather nicely shaped butt presented to him, he watched the gait of her walk. She moved gracefully... however, the grace reminded him somewhat of a tiger. Definitely mustn't mess around with this girl and her karate.
