Ariel shrugged. He deserved that label, and he knew it. Not that he particularly cared. He didn't remember ever saying he wanted a relationship out of the deal or ever even implying that he wanted anything deeper out of it. It was Markise's own fault for wanting to take it further. "I certainly hope you don't expect me to go off apologizing," he said, pulling his eyes away from the bubble.

Markise made a light sound of derision. "You? apologize?" he scoffed. "You only do that to save face for girls, and I know I'm not worth that kind of trouble. I'm barely worth the effort of opening your pants." Markise pressed his lips tight a moment, then parted them to blow another bubble. This wasn't worth getting angry over. Ariel was a jerk, and Markise wanted nothing to do with him, it was that simple.

"Excuse me," Ariel said, glaring over at Markise. "If my memory serves me right I did apologize to you the last time I pissed you off. I don't plan on doing it every damned time, though." Markise seemed to get angry so often. Ariel didn't consider the fact that he was the cause of it, most of the things he said he didn't think were going to make Markise angry, weren't intended to make him angry.

"Feel free to find me when you get over this is not an apology!" Markise bit out, turning to look at Ariel. "You didn't apologize at the club either, you've apologized once, and it was probably so I'd go *~ on you!" Which, of course, Markise had done. "I'm not a whore, despite what you may think, so you can get over that!" Ariel infuriated him! Markise chewed furiously on his gum again, then blew a frustrated bubble.

Ariel could have argued the whore point, but chose not to, instead deciding to focus on the club. "Why would I apologize? You seemed to be having plenty of fun with Dare and those girls, why shouldn't I be able to have a bit of fun?" Of course, it hadn't at all been intended as fun, but that was beside the point.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Markise said, tilting his head lightly and lowering his voice to mock apology as he looked back at Ariel. "If you find it fun to make out with girls, by all means, go for it, I don't own you. And as for the rest, you didn't seem to mind when you told me to go for it, so I don't even know why you're mentioning it now." Unless he was jealous. I wish, Markise thought. "This isn't about a stupid apology anyway!" Markise folded his arms tightly across his chest, seething. No, it wasn't about the apology. It was about Markise's fear of being used again.

"Oh really," Ariel said, looking over at Markise. "Tell me, then, what exactly is it about?" And no, Ariel hadn't minded, it was certainly better than going and dancing with Markise in public, but he certainly hadn't planned on seeing it. He also hadn't planned on that surge of anger and jealousy that had boiled up inside, where the hell had that come from, anyway?

Markise's lips pressed tight for some moments as he tried to think of what he could tell Ariel, but all that came to mind was the truth. "I've been used before," he said. "I gave him everything I had, and he took it, and sometimes I got a pat on the head for good behavior. I'm not a whore, and I'm not doing it again. I'm not going to be a sex toy, and if all you want is a *~, become a contortionist." That was what this was about, as exactly as Markise could say it without direct comparisons. Markise kept his arms crossed tightly and blew another bubble.

What was Ariel supposed to say to that? He had never claimed to want anything more from Markise, had he? They had said something about making it a habit and that was all that Ariel was aware of. But if that was really all it was then he wouldn't have felt that jealousy and anger. Either time. "I can't believe he danced with you," he said, somewhat bitterly, as he focused his eyes on one large tentacle rising up out of the water.

Markise rolled his eyes at that apparent change of subject. "What is your problem with that?" he asked, looking at Ariel again. "He's my friend, why shouldn't he?" Markise wished that Ariel would just either say it or get over it. "And don't give me that bull about him having a boyfriend. You don't give a sh~ about me, so why in hell would you give a sh~ about how my friend's love life is going?" There was no reason whatsoever, other than Ariel being a petty possessive type. My toy," Markise thought bitterly.

"Like I really care that he has a boyfriend," Ariel scoffed, wrinkling his nose. "I couldn't care less if his relationship went to hell because you two danced together, but come on, do I have to spell it out?" He bit his tongue hard, he wasn't about to admit to Markise that he had been jealous. Didn't really want Markise to figure it out on his own, either, but he would much rather that than coming out and saying it.

Markise rolled his eyes again and looked steadily out at the water. It felt like a declaration, but how much did it really mean? He couldn't decide. "No," he said at last. What Markise wanted from Ariel wasn't promises of affection, though he wouldn't pretend he'd never care to hear one. Eventually, he would, when there was actually something there, but he didn't need one now. "I don't need you following me around like a sick puppy slavering romantic nonsense, Ariel. I just want something more than sex. Talk to me, go out with me somewhere as friends, just don't use me and throw me away." Markise's words weren't angry anymore, and he hated the vulnerability he heard in them. He kept his arms wrapped tightly, as though he could comfort himself and push his insecurities away.

Ariel's eyes fell from the lake down to the ground just in front of his toes, eyebrows creasing as he thought. He could do that, couldn't he? He had had guy friends before, not that they had ever gone anywhere. He chewed his tongue and tried to work through some of it in his mind. He really didn't want a relationship. It was confusing, and annoying, so very unsure about the whole thing. One very small part of him said to go for it, while the rest said that he would be just fine without Markise, that he only had a year and a half before he could move somewhere.

Brooding again. Markise looked back out to the lake again, consoling himself with slow bubbles. Now was not a time for his allergies to start up, so he told himself firmly not to give in to them. Still, one fingerless glove rose a moment to wipe gently at his eye, then tucked down against his arm again. He could only take it that Ariel was like Kwami after all, but instead of a charming knight, he was a brooding fallen angel. Same difference, Markise told himself.

"Let's say I agree," Ariel said, glancing over at Markise and shifting closer to him. "How soon would that coat be finished?" He wondered if Markise would catch on that he planned on trying it, or if he would just get all pissy at the attempt at humor to break the silence and make everything all the worse. His arms itched to wrap around Markise, but he wouldn't do it until they had come to some understanding where both of them knew where they stood.
