Markise loved the fall. The heat had died down, but it wasn't cold enough yet to need a full-out coat. He had a thinner jacket on today, one that he loved not only for its comfort, but for the fact that it hung down past his hips and accentuated the lines of his body. He had a light scarf around the back of his neck, more for the look of it than the warmth, and fingerless gloves as well. He didn't sit today, but stood looking out over the water, hands in his pockets, thinking. Something he'd been doing far too much of lately.

Ariel didn't know why he was out by the lake. Perhaps it was some sick form of self-harm, forcing himself to be out in the cold by water he knew he couldn't go in, that he wouldn't be able to go in for months. It was made all the better when he recognized the figure standing by the edge of the lake. He paused, but came up beside Markise anyway, the cloak that had once belonged to some Ravenclaw wrapped tightly around him. "Happy? You got me to kiss her."

Markise started at the sound of Ariel's voice and the sudden heat of his body so close. He forced his lips into the closest approximation of a smirk as he could manage, then tilted his head up defiantly and looked aside at the boy. He'd been demoted from man status with that stunt at the club. "Not as much as you are, I'm sure. Just think, do it again a couple times and you could have that girlfriend you want so badly." Markise's eyes took in Ariel's ill-fitted cloak. "It looks like I was wrong, you are a fashion nightmare." Markise turned his gaze back on the lake then.

Ariel rolled his eyes and just pulled the cloak tighter. "Oh shut up," he said, wrinkling his nose and looking out over the water. "Like hell I want a girlfriend," he added, grimacing slightly. "Besides, she tasted like fish and garlic." He wrinkled his nose again and worked his tongue against the roof of his mouth as the taste came back to his tongue.

"You're the one who kissed her," Markise said, showing no sympathy whatsoever. "I didn't make you, even if I did suggest it. You'd have done it anyway." Like he had with that girl at the club the other night. And he'd kissed that girl a lot harder than he'd kissed Olivia. Markise inwardly smirked again at the memory of watching Security break them up. "And you need a girlfriend, even if you don't specifically want one. You wouldn't want anyone thinking there was something queer about you."

"Because I have such a larger chance of being outed than you do," Ariel said, glaring over at Markise. He figured that if either of them was found out it would be Markise. He was so much more obvious than Ariel was, even if Ariel didn't get a girlfriend. "If either of us needs a girlfriend, it's you."

Markise looked at Ariel again, narrowing his eyes. "No, thank you. I like myself enough to not have to pretend I'm someone else." Markise gave a light toss of his hair and turned hardened blue eyes back out over the lake. He totally would get a girlfriend, just to piss Ariel off, if it wouldn't mean that some poor girl would be getting used. He wasn't the kind of heartless bastard that did that to people. "I could get a girlfriend tonight if I wanted one that badly. There's several at the club in Hogsmeade who'd be all for it." But, again, he wouldn't do that to them.

Ariel had snorted at Markise's assertion that he didn't pretend to be someone else. The real Markise had lavender hair and enjoyed being on his knees, and Ariel certainly didn't see that Markise walking around the halls of Hogwarts. "I'm fine without a girlfriend," he said, turning with dark eyes back to the lake. From his memory things had been fine before his last girlfriend, and had only gotten worse afterward.

"Mmhm, you're perfectly fine all alone, j~ off in the bathroom, too." What had Markise ever seen in him? Had it all been the attraction? He hated to think so, but he could still feel Ariel beside him, no matter how diligently he looked out at the lake. "I'm glad you're fine, Ariel, I really am." Markise didn't believe it for a second. Maybe Ariel was fine, but he wasn't happy, and it was too bad. Markise had thought he could make Ariel happy, but Ariel had refused anything other than one *~ after another, and that one round of birthday sex.

Ariel didn't know why he was still standing there talking, why he even cared. But he did, at least a little. And though he refused to think about it, he did know a bit of the why. Markise was the only one that knew, Markise was the only one that knew about that day with the magazine so long ago. There wasn't anything there other than that, though, aside from the physical. Ariel was soon lost to his own thoughts and forgetting to speak.

And Ariel had gone silent again, something that didn't surprise Markise as much as exasperate him. He wished that Ariel would just make up his damn mind, say whatever it was he held back or leave Markise alone. Even if Markise didn't want to be alone. But he didn't have any choice, not here, where half the gay guys at school were taken and the other half were him and Ariel. Markise gave a light, almost inaudible sigh and dug around in his pocket a moment, finally pulling out a stick of gum between his bare fingertips. He needed something to do with his mouth other than pick another fight with Ariel. Markise unwrapped the gum, then tucked the wrapper in his pocket with one hand as the other slipped the gum into his mouth.

Ariel didn't plan on saying anything about his thoughts, if Markise wanted to know he would have to ask. The silence stretched as Ariel glanced over only to see Markise slipping a piece of that wretched gum between his lips. He sighed heavily through his nose and turned his eyes back to the lake, refusing to let himself watch like he wanted. "Do you ever stop with the gum?" he asked, raising an eyebrow, though he kept his eyes firmly on the water.

Markise blinked and looked aside at Ariel, only then recalling Ariel's uncontrollable need to watch his mouth. His lips curve. "I have an oral fixation," he said, the truth, but a purposeful tease at the moment. "I need something to do with my mouth." He turned his gaze back to the lake as well, willing his gum to get to the right consistency, then blowing a bubble the moment it was close.

"I would gladly give you something to do with it," Ariel pointed out, glancing over and watching the bubble. "But I get the feeling you're just not that into it right now." A light breeze blew and he rearranged the cloak around his shoulders. Besides, it was too damned cold outside to be even thinking about doing anything. He prayed it didn't get much colder, though he doubted his prayers would be answered.

Markise lifted his chin again and only allowed himself a very brief glance aside at Ariel. "Not after what an ass you've been," he said. He tried not to let the knowledge that Ariel still wanted him warm him too much, but it warmed him no matter his preferences. Of course Ariel wanted him, he reasoned with himself. Ariel had wanted him the last time they'd met in that classroom, too. And he'd probably wanted him on the train. He'd been watching the bubbles then at least, like he was now. Markise blew another, slower one now. The problem wasn't whether Ariel wanted him, he reminded himself firmly. It wasn't even about whether he wanted Ariel, it was about being more than a sex toy. Even if the sex had been incredible, and Ariel had been a giving lover. Markise popped his bubble and started another. He was stronger than that.
