Ariel pulled off his shirt, then looked back at Markise as he folded it. "I swear if you go in that water and I have to rescue you again, you're going to regret it." He firmly ignored whatever it was that Markise had said, and laid the shirt on his pants. It didn't matter if they had always been like that, Ariel didn't like Markise being that close to another guy. You've known him like three weeks. That didn't matter, it didn't take much to become possessive.

Markise rolled his eyes again. "And what are you going to do, let me drown this time?" Ariel had said he wasn't that heartless, and though the warning he'd just given gave Markise pause, he didn't think Ariel would do that. Would he? Markise bent to lay his folded pants on top of his shoes, then straightened to pull his shirt off over his head. He didn't know what Ariel's malfunction was. Dare and him had been perfectly innocent, and aside from when Ariel was kissing him, the man was incredibly lukewarm about things.

No, Ariel wasn't going to let Markise drown, but he was sure that there was someway he could make Markise regret it anyway. He didn't reply and went down into the water, little bumps immediately racing across his skin at the chill. They were ignored in favor of diving under the shallow water, the profound silence engulfing him for the long seconds he was able to stay under.

Markise frowned after Ariel, standing there for a moment with his shirt in his hand before turning to fold it. The man was impossible. But what was Markise supposed to do about it? He wasn't going to prostrate himself at Ariel's feet and beg forgiveness for having accepted comfort from a friend. Markise folded his shirt neatly, then set it on top of the stack of his clothes. Ariel needed to either tell Markise what bug had crawled up his ass or get over it.
Markise turned to the water, shivering a bit as he stepped in. It really was colder than he preferred, but he wasn't about to get out now. He wanted to tweak Ariel, and he couldn't do that from shore. Markise girded himself, then splashed into the water, moving immediately into a swim once he was deep enough. He didn't want to cramp again, and he didn't want to freeze to death.

Ariel took in a deep breath when he finally came up a few yards away, far enough that he couldn't touch the bottom just by putting his feet down, and started a slow backstroke. His ears rested just beneath the surface of the water, and his arms moved slowly as his legs trailed after him. He wondered if it was possible to just stay in the water forever, to live there, perhaps, free from the worries of the world.

When Markise had recovered enough from the cold water, he watched Ariel, noting not for the first time how his body moved. It should be illegal to move like that, he thought, more than a little annoyed with himself. He wasn't nearly as aggravated with Ariel right now as he should be. Markise moved lazily through the water, moving more for the sake of moving than anything, and blew bubbles to entertain himself. It occurred to him that he probably should have gotten rid of his gum before getting into the water, but since he hadn't, he figured he'd just go with it.

Ariel came close to Markise and glanced over to see another bubble coming from those lips, so he kicked, purposefully sending sprinkles of water over towards Markise and the gum, then his eyes flashed as he took a few strong strokes back. He wasn't over the aggravation, but he couldn't resist the temptation to ruin a perfectly good piece of gum with lake water. Or maybe that was why he had done it, even he wasn't sure.

Markise popped the bubble in surprise, automatically closing his eyes against the splash. He grimaced at the taste of lake water on his lips, then frowned after Ariel as he pulled the gum out of his mouth, silently apologizing to anything living in the lake as he let it drop into the water. He wanted to snap at Ariel, but for the moment, the instinct to give chase took over, and Markise went after him. He realized that Ariel could outswim him, but his pride demanded that he at least try, even if he wasn't entirely sure what he was trying.

Ariel saw Markise start to come after him, and his eyes flashed again as he turned in the water and started a freestroke forward, though he didn't go full speed. He let himself go at an easy pace, wondering absently what Markise would do when he caught up, should Ariel wait long enough for him to do anything. He didn't think he would, he was still bitter about what he had walked up on and the knowledge that the two had dated and it didn't make him want to have direct contact with Markise just yet.

Markise didn't have any solid plan as he made his way steadily after Ariel. He tried not to let himself be distracted by that sun-bronzed skin sluicing through the water or the bunch and release of well-toned muscles, but it was hard not to look. Damn him. Markise drew closer, and closer still, highly suspicious that Ariel wasn't escaping him. Just a bit further and he could grab him...kiss the hell out of the jackass.

Ariel glanced over his shoulder and almost, almost, let Markise catch him. But he figured that just a minute or two more wouldn't kill him, so he turned under the water and doubled back under Markise to pop up a few feet from his legs and heading the opposite direction. Markise could catch him next time, Ariel just couldn't bring himself to stay away much longer, not even with the aggravation he tried to keep in his mind. Between the relaxing water and the glimpse of a wet Markise he couldn't keep it very strong.

Markise blinked when Ariel disappeared, and he stopped in the water, looking around a moment before he heard the light splash behind him. He turned, and his brows creased with annoyance. It didn't surprise him at all that Ariel wanted to play cat and mouse. Unfortunately--or perhaps it was fortunate after all-- Markise knew he didn't stand a chance of being the cat. Not in the water, anyway. Markise frowned after Ariel for a minute, then sighed and headed off into deeper water, leaving Ariel behind. He could just play with himself.

Ariel realized immediately that the sounds in the water were no longer following him, and he glanced back to see Markise going out farther into the lake. He scowled and, against his better judgment, started going back to shore. Fine, if Markise wasn't willing to work a little, he wasn't going to deal with it, the water could only distract him so much. At least as long as Markise was there.

Markise frowned when he realized Ariel wasn't following him. He stopped and turned to see him heading toward shore, and his lips pressed tight. Dammit. Markise bristled. He debated going further out into the water just to tick Ariel off more, but found himself making his way after Ariel instead. An idea struck him long before he reached the other boy, though, and Markise let himself sink in the water with a loud splash. "Oh my God, cramp!" he shouted melodramatically, floundering in the water. He let himself go under for a few moments, then surfaced again, splashing madly. "Help!"

Ariel jerked around, then narrowed his eyes as he saw Markise. The distance was just enough that he didn't immediately realize that it was an act, only realizing when he got there that something seemed wrong. He wasn't willing to take the complete chance that it wasn't real, though, and so grabbed Markise's arm tightly, "Like splashing around like an idiot really helps any." It wasn't easy, but it still wasn't too hard to just relax and float.
