Boyfriend. Dammit! Markise thought, his eyes narrowing slightly for just a moment before he pushed that spark of jealousy away. Now wasn't the time for that. Still some annoyance showed in his eyes as he looked the guy over, deeply appraising. He was a fashion nightmare, even if he was too hot for his own good. And damn that hair! Markise had to work to get his to look that thick! Dump him! Markise thought, as though he could will Dare to do it. Dump him now! "Nice to meet you," Markise said, hoping the bitterness didn't show, for Dare's sake.

Michael felt a little awkward about it, but then his chest swelled when Dare introduced him. This is Michael....my boyfriend. He smiled up at Dare and then looked back at the other two, letting his eyes hover on Brindle for perhaps a little too long, just to postpone meeting Markise's eyes. When he did, his smile faltered as he realized that that was the guy that Dare had been with. His arm rose to mimic Dare's, resting his hand on his side protectively. "You, too," he said, though he couldn't help mentally telling the guy to go back to California.

Dare had looked at Michael when he felt the motion of his hand, and his eyes glowed--for all of a moment before he noticed the look in Michael's eyes. Dare's fingers swept lightly against Michael's side a moment before he turned to look at Markise and Brindle again, who looked, respectively, affronted and shocked. Dare blinked and turned his gaze on Markise. "What's wrong?" he asked, entirely clueless about the undertone floating around him.

Brindle had a feeling Dare and Markise were going to have a talk now, so she turned her attention on Michael. "You don't have a younger brother, do you?" she asked. A well-dressed, single younger brother? "Or an older brother?" He really was good-looking, and clothes could be changed, anyway. Brindle smiled brightly and toyed with her multicolor hair.

I'm going to be around a while, get used to it, Markise thought, then turned his gaze away from Michael and back to Dare. "I'm fine, I just...didn't expect you to get over me so soon," he said, purposefully baiting. Okay, so it had been like half a year and he'd only been with Dare a couple months, but still, was he that easy to forget? Markise raised his right hand and began toying with a strand of hair, forgetting entirely that he'd meant to be civil.

Michael's eyebrows had come together and he had started to shake his head no in answer to Brindle when Markise spoke, which brought his eyes right back to those blue. He tensed under Dare's arm and his fingers tightened in the cloth at Dare's side. His eyes narrowed slightly at Markise, though his mind was frantic. We weren't together like you and me...not even any comparison...that was it. He bit his tongue to keep from saying anything, but that didn't mean his gaze wasn't just as intense. How long ago had they been together, anyway?

Dare's lips parted in shock. What was Markise doing? And why? What was he thinking? And what was with the hair twirling, and...had his voice changed? It was only in that long moment where a thousand questions flashed through his mind that he even noticed. His eyes broke from Markise's, looking him over. He looked just the same, but...why wasn't he just happy for him? "What do you mean, get over you?!" he asked, confused as hell. "What happened to Kwami?"

Brindle had just given a sigh of resignation to Michael when she'd heard her brother speak, then Dare. Her eyes widened, and she turned to look at Markise in shock. What are you doing?! He was acting up, that's what he was doing. She'd never even had a boyfriend and she knew that wasn't something you were supposed to ask in front of one!

Markise felt his sister's gaze and flicked a sharp glance at her. Stay out of it. He turned back to Dare, crossing his arms over his chest. "Kwami dumped me, thanks for the reminder," he said. "He didn't say a thing about me coming out until it was a done deed." Markise didn't bother answering Dare's first question. He thought it was pretty obvious what he meant.

Whoever that Kwami person was, he must not have been very important, for Markise to apparently want to move on soon quickly. His arm tightened around Dare and Michael shifted closer to him, needing the extra bit of contact it brought. He pressed his lips tightly together and breathed hard through his nose, repeating over and over in his mind that he had Dare, and there was nothing Markise could do about it. He really didn't like Markise and, though at least a small part of him felt bad for it since Dare had said he was a good friend, Michael didn't stop his feelings from showing in his eyes.

Dare's arm tightened around Michael without any real thought, his mind still blown away by Markise. "He dumped you? Again?" Stupid question, really. And Markise had come out, alone. Dare's free hand rose, spearing into his hair. He could understand Markise being pissy now, but had he really needed to go after Michael? "I'm sorry to hear it," Dare said at last. "Is that why you came out here? Was it bad?" Dare's fingers swept lightly against Michael's side, grateful he had someone with him while he went through it. He couldn't imagine having to face everything alone.

Brindle knew she'd just be in the way if she tried joining the conversation now, so she heaved a sigh and wandered off toward that weird chip in the wall. She leaned up against the stone beside it and trailed her fingers over it and around it, prepared to just wait until they were done reuniting or bickering or whatever.

"Yes, it was bad," Markise said bitterly. "Mama and Pa pulled me from SWIM, and I was glad of it. I told them I wanted to come here." And be with you, he added silently. Markise dropped his gaze, his arms tightening against his chest as he looked at the stone wall closest to him. "I'm sorry I'm being so bitchy," he said, still annoyed, but contrite now. "It's been a long summer and fall." It's been too long without you.

"You're sorry?" Michael said, tilting his head and unable to hold his tongue any longer. "Do you have any idea how excited Dare was to tell you about us? And when he gets the chance you act like that?" He raised an eyebrow and tightened his fingers again in the cloth of Dare's shirt. "Don't get me wrong, I know how bad it can be," he said, images flashing in his mind. "But you could at least pretend to be happy."

Dare's eyes widened and his head swung back to Michael. His dream was quickly becoming a nightmare. "Michael," he said sharply under his breath. He could understand why Markise was acting how he was, he was taking it out all wrong, but Dare could understand why. His expectations, whatever they were, had been thrown, too. Dare brought his free hand to his waist, curving over Michael's and hoping to calm him. This wasn't what he wanted. He'd been sure that if they met they'd love each other!
