Chase gave another mirthless chuckle that seemed to echo in the quiet room. It faded, then died, and Chase shook his head slowly. "Not anymore," he said. He'd tried. He'd pushed her away for so long, and the more she refused to take it, the less he was able to fight it. He'd stopped saying no to her some time ago. He'd had to say yes, and he'd tried finding loopholes to slip free, but every time he did, she caught him, and the more he thought about what it would be like if he was free, the less he wanted to keep fighting.

It took a moment for his words to sink in, but when they did she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. True, it wasn't an admission of feeling for her, or a promise of anything to come; but coming from Chase after all that had happened that afternoon, it meant a lot to her. Her lips curved into a soft smile. "Thank you." She said as she put her hand back on top of his and squeezed his hand between hers.

Chase couldn't bring himself to say you're welcome, nor to even bob his head in acceptance. His hand tightened against hers, though. Somehow it was a relief to have said it, and some deep part of Chase wondered at that. She hadn't demanded a declaration of some feeling he either didn't have or hadn't recognized yet. She hadn't demanded anything, only asked, and it felt like she'd accepted his answer. It felt like she'd understood him. It was an uncomfortable thought, but somehow Chase couldn't pull away from it, not with her hands against his, not with the fact that she hadn't tried to make him look at her, but left him the distance he needed. He'd never have been able to make these confessions otherwise.

Annabelle was fine with Chase not speaking. The awkwardness of the moment had faded into a comfortable silence as they sat holding hands. She had slowly learned that sometimes actions spoke louder than words, and thought that was the case most of the time with Chase.
As they sat together, her mind started to wander. She still didn't know where she stood, if they were going along with the non-relationship, or if things had developed on their own past that. She wouldn't ask him though; if he wanted to define what was between them, he'd have to bring it up. She didn't want to push him away by pressuring him into something he'd said he didn't want. The only problem Anna had with the way things currently stood, is if asked about them, was she supposed to admit that there was something between them, or deny that anything was happening? It was probably a moot point anyway, Anna had never been good at lying so the other person would more than likely see the truth no matter what she answered.
Anna happened to look out the window, and was surprised to find it wasn't daylight anymore. She glanced at her watch and realized they'd missed the evening meal already. "It looks like dinner just ended, want to go see what the kitchen elves will give us?"

Chase shook his head. "I need to be alone a while," he said. It wasn't personal, if one judged by his hand still resting between Annabelle's, but he couldn't look up at her yet. Too much had happened, and he didn't know what to do with it. He saw the metaphorical olive branch that Anna was offering him, but he couldn't take it. Not yet. He needed to think this over without her, needed to sleep on it. He wasn't even sure what it was.

Anna reluctantly stood, feeling like she was abandoning him, but wanted to respect him request. "All right, if you're sure?" She hesitated, not wanting to break the connection by releasing his hand. "Can I see you tomorrow?" It was a partially selfish request to see him, but she wanted to make sure that he was okay too.

Tomorrow seemed too soon, but what good would another day or three do for him? Another week? "Fine," Chase said, the word agreement more than the resignation it probably sounded like. He knew what the next question would be, and so he forced his mind to work on it. It had to be someplace where people wouldn't see them, someplace he didn't normally go. "Behind the smaller greenhouse after lunch," he said at last, pushing to his feet. He glanced down at Annabell, then looked away, uncomfortable. He needed time.

Anna rested one of her hands on Chase's shoulder as she leaned up on her tiptoes and placed a kiss on the cheek Chase had turned to her. "I'll be there." She stepped away, pausing a moment at the loss of contact, wanting to reach out again and hold him, have him wrap his arms around her. She mentally shook the thoughts from her head; now was not the time or place. He needed his space, and she had to leave for that to happen. Anna forced her feet to move toward the door. "Take care Chase." She'd make sure that a house elf found him and brought him a plate in a little bit since she doubted he'd remember to eat on his own.

Chase watched after Anna, staring at the door for some long minutes before he headed in the same direction. At the door he turned back, sending everything into its place with a few flicks of his wand. Then he left, heading outside to the lake. He needed to be alone.
