"I'm getting complaints about yesterday's lesson," Chase said. He folded his hands on his desk. "At first they were from Hufflepuff sixth years, but I've gotten several howlers from parents since last night." Chase held back a sigh. This was the bs that he hated the most. Michael knew what he was talking about, he'd been cleared by Aurors, approved and hired by Hells, and this was the first time he'd heard anything he needed to take seriously.
"Parents don't want their kids watching Death Eater memories. Please tell me you weren't serious."

"Of course I wasn't," Michael said, leaning back in a chair in front of Chase's desk. "Even if a student came up and asked I wouldn't. I was calling out a troublesome student in the hopes of putting him in line." From how quickly the kid had shut his mouth, it had been a successful attempt. He knew he'd pushed the line, but he also knew he hadn't crossed it. Had he crossed it, he was sure there'd have been at least one Auror knocking down his door, rather than a request for a visit from his boss.

"Enough kids thought you were serious to owl and firecall their parents, Michael. I'm putting a letter of reprimand in your file. Look it over and if there's anything you disagree with, let me know. Otherwise sign it and let's get this over with." He offered Michael a page of parchment topped with the Hogwarts letterhead. It read: Professor Michael Blackwood-Hardt,
Hogwarts School of Witcraft and Wizardry has learned of concerns about your second period Defence Against the Dark Arts class on 9th March,2016. Specifically, there was an offer to share pensieve memories. While this would surely convey a message relevant to your subject, we must respectfully ask you to retract said offer due to limitations detailed in section 12.1 of the Regulations for Professor/Student Relations.
We at Hogwarts would like to thank you for your dedication to the education of our students!
Yours sincerely,
Chase Firebrand Deputy Headmaster

Michael repressed a sigh, and no, the sound that escaped as he shifted in his seat was not a sigh, and took the parchment. Although he read it, he did not immediately sign. Rather, he held the sheet between his hands and looked up at Chase. "No disagreements," he said, "but I think I should probably tell you something I'm considering.
"The majority of these kids, they've never been touched by the dark arts, not in the slightest. I'll never show students memories, but I'm wondering if showing them the mark might be a good idea. Not to make them take me seriously, just to show them reality." Only sixth years, only NEWT level.

Chase gave a level stare. "From what I've heard, you already did that." He looked down as he brought out a fresh sheet of parchment and a quill. "I'll give you permission and date it the 8th. I agree they need to learn about it, but you have to keep your ass covered. You're a good teacher, I don't want to lose you because some kid's parents have PTSD from the Battle of Hogwarts."

"So if I made it a regular thing to my NEWT students, that wouldn't hurt anything?" Just the mark, never the pensieve. "I'd never show students anything they don't need to see, of course, but seeing it, seeing it on someone they know, making it real...it could make those stragglers take things seriously." Michael knew it wouldn't take long for the tradition to spread through the school as rumor, but wouldn't it just encourage more students to try harder to learn and get the grade to see the famous mark?

Chase's lips firmed as he ran the suggestion through every rule he could think of. He pitted it against what he knew of past Defence professors, then gave a brief nod and looked up from his parchment. "Make it official," he said. "Put it in your syllabus. Really think about it. I know you won't glamorize anything, but make sure you know where the line is." Words. It was all just ass covering.

Michael nodded and only after doing so did he pick up a quill to sign the reprimand. "I'll make it formal, even let you read it over like a good little boy if necessary," he said, peeking up with half a smile at Chase in the middle of signing. He could write up an addition to his syllabus in a minute at home, maybe even get Dare to help him make sure it was suitable.
