Aline followed his lead allowing the clear liquid to make it's way down her throat. The familiar burn was soothing and she licked her lower lip enjoying the fraction of a second they felt numb. her glass now rested on her crossed leg. "I've only been to Germany in passing. Didn't get the opportunity to enjoy it, what's it like?" considering all the countries she's been to, she couldn't really claim she saw much of the country. It was usually too meet someone briefly and then she'd apparate straight home.

Emilian swirled the bit of liquid left in his glass as he thought about what to say. "I didn't exactly get the most normal of experiences," he said, then reached forward to pick something off the tray. "I spent time among the upper-crust Society people there and they're a lot more old-fashioned in some ways. I lived in a damn castle when I was there. It's a beautiful country, but I spent most of my time looking at books and parchment in a study."

Aline wrinkled up her nose in mock disgust. "With all that scenery and you spent it locked away in a study. A tragedy," she lifted her glass once more and took another sip almost halfway through the drink she poured-- not that there was much to begin with. "One could argue the wizarding world as a whole is old-fashioned, but society is a whole different... game? That is what they say here?" english saying's were never her strong point, but she was trying at least. "Either way, my father and I were kept on the edges of society and it has been a comfortable ride." not that she didn't want more. Money without a title was limiting.

"Yeah, but German Society can put English Society to shame in how old-fashioned it can be, they had *dance cards* there," Emilian said, then took a drink. He'd only refill when she was also ready, but he started to look through the selection to see which he would choose. "I think sometimes being on the edge of Society is the best place to be. A lot fewer expectations when you aren't at the top."

She paused to finish the rest of her drink not for a second turning her attention away from him as he spoke. "You don't strike me as the old-fashioned kind of person it must have been a bore," she could only handle the social setting of society for so long before it became boring, but that wasn't the reason she wanted to be in; there were more tangible forms of enjoyment and it started with more influence. "Yes, but the edge can get... lonely," and she looked back to the bottles, "It's your turn to pick."

Over the past years, Emilian had experienced being on the edge of society as a whole, and he could imagine it could be much the same to be on the edge of Society. He plunked a couple of ice cubes into his glass after he finished it and cleaned it with a wand, and reached for one Aline had brought. "I didn't spend much time on the edge of Society, I was at the top, then I was on probation, so to speak, then I was out," he said as he poured a small measure into each of their glasses.

Perhaps he was out now, but... "We were all dealt a hand of cards; just depends on how you play them," she took her drink one of her favorites she enjoyed it frequently reading in silence across her father in his study. "Sometimes you just want to change your hand," she didn't want much, but she was tired of just being another unknown 'nouveau riche'. "If you don't mind me asking, but would you ever return?" it was an innocent question and she was sincerely curious.

"That's a question I've had to consider recently," Emilian said. Before he spoke again, he took a mouthful of the clear liquid and nodded appreciatively as he let it linger. "I want to say no, should say no, but if given the chance? Well." He shrugged and picked again at the platter. "I don't know. Besides, if I were in, I wouldn't be sitting here with you, would I?" A curve of the lips and another spark in his eyes slipped out as he looked at her. A little flirt here and there couldn't hurt. Right?

Her lips curved upward at the flirtatious gesture and she drank more making sure to take her time. "Then I should be thankful that you are out," but she just hoped not for long. He was her ticket, her way in, but it wasn't like she didn't enjoy his company; he was pleasant to be around. "Stop me if I'm being too bold, but what's preventing you from taking the opportunity to go back?" she didn't want to seem like she was prying, but the more she spoke to him the more her curiosity grew.

Emilian shifted back into the couch as he considered what to tell her. "I made too many mistakes. Immature, bad choices. If you really want to know the details, it's all out in the bloody open. Magazines, papers, word of mouth...I guess you only don't know it because you haven't lived here." He touched his cheek with his gloved hand as a quiet reminder to a few of the scars he had.

Aline let a momentary silence befall them after he spoke. Did she even care to know? Not really. If there was something she needed to know he'd tell her at some point. "Our mistakes don't define us," nor did she think whatever it was he did would make him a particularly bad person.

Hadn't Storm already tried to pull that on him? Emilian looked away from Aline and down at his glass, instead. Maybe for other people, mistakes didn't define them, but he couldn't believe it of himself. The few good things he'd done...what did they even mean in the face of everything else? "Most people don't think that way," he said simply, then finished his drink. "Let's focus on the vodka, shall we?"

Aline knew when someone was trying to avoid a topic and she didn't know him enough to press him; it wasn't in her nature to force a conversation. Whatever it was he did, he must think it was really bad, but she wondered if it was as horrid as it made him feel. Aline nodded completely unfazed by his need to change the subject, she had to at least seem somewhat empty headed. "This vodka is probably my general favorite," she paused to take a drink. "Mid-evening once every week my father and I drink this in his study. Usually in silence each one reading their own book, but those moments I always look forward to." The quick change to herself was the easiest was to move forward from the previous uncomfort she may have caused.

As he listened to her with half of his mind, Emilian thought back to the anger he'd felt when speaking with Storm, and to what had happened afterward, about how things had changed in just the short week since saving Isolde. A few curious glances his direction every now and again, and someone had actually held open a door for him after realizing who he was. "You and your father must be close, drinking with you and letting you take care of international affairs."

Aline shrugged, in a fashion they were close, but it wasn’t the most conventional family relationships. “I am all he has and he is all I have. We trust each other; he is my closest friend,” the only person she could really rely on without throwing her under the bus. “I am very fortunate in that regard.”
