Keith laughed, and though he considered smothering it he let it continue as he worked. Dangerous ones. That was one way of putting it. He supposed he wasn't in any position to argue.
"The plant has personality," he said after a few moments. Although his laugh was gone, a smile remained. "So, what subjects do you enjoy?" he asked to change the subject. Eiliyah obviously cared little for herbology.

Eiliyah didn't expect him to laugh but she mirrored it with a bright smile of her own. How long had it been since she laughed? An actual lighthearted and carefree laugh? It had been too long. "Personality! If these plants could express themselves they'd be complete jerks."
She continued to work more cautious with her approach. Maybe herbology wasn't too bad she just never had a passion for it. "Back in my old school we had more classes than the ones offered here. There's this one called muggle and wizarding politics and relations. It teaches how the muggle and wizarding world function together. It got taken out just before we had to..." had to what? She trailed off and shrugged her shoulders it didn't matter he may not even know who she was the only one she was sure knew was the Headmaster and Headmistress. She wasn't sure if he told her professors or not. "...leave." she said finally after a long pause.

Keith looked aside at Eiliyah, but remained silent on about why she might have had to leave her old school. "We have other classes here sometimes, if a professor comes and seems confident enough in an area to start. I heard there was even once a rock band class," he said. Years ago, but he'd seen a few instruments tucked away in a closet once. "A muggle/wizard relations class might be a good idea..." he trailed off thoughtfully as he worked.

Eiliyah mused the idea of the class busying her hands with the plant. It took her a while to respond again she was so absorbed in her thoughts.
"Maybe when I graduate the Headmaster will allow me to teach it here." She doubted he would let her though. "Not that he likes me, probably wants me out of the school as soon as I'm done." She seemed to be pissing everyone she met so far not that she met many. "You and I seem to be the same. The more we reach out the more people want to swat us away." She leaned a bit forward the plant reaching to grab her she swat it away and continued working.

Keith's lips curved as she worked with the plant and he thought of all the professors working at the school. "Well, Hogwarts obviously has no problems with young professors," he said, "and Chase doesn't even like all of us. Him and Michael Blackwood-Hardt, the Defense professor, have a history, for example. He's not happy with my partner, and probably doesn't like that I bring him into the school sometimes." Partner. That surprised him a little, he couldn't remember ever calling Lyric that before. He supposed that after so long together it was probably more accurate than boyfriend, though.

It was surprising the first time how young the headmaster was; it wasn't a shock hearing that the professors were around the same age. Eiliyah mused the idea of being a professor, it wasn't something she ever considered, but she had heard society here was so shut off unlike her own; granted home was moving backwards. "It might be a good career choice if I'm never allowed home." Eiliyah continued with the plants. "Well I'm sure your partner is a great person. Maybe headmaster just needs to loosen up a bit." technically she shouldn't be speaking in such a manner and with a professor, but she already found herself opening up to him. He was the only person so far who didn't seem irritated by her presence; at least there was one.

Keith smiled, though it likely wasn't a good idea to spread the gossip of why Lyric had been originally banned. Even if it was to an older student. "Chase is a good headmaster, and I can understand why he wants to be tough. We don't want bad publicity, and though the Prophet's been quiet recently, it's probably just begging for something to happen to try to drag the school through the mud again." Most of the drama had happened before his arrival, and he would bet a lot of the lack of drama was due to Chase.

Eiliyah had only heard stories, but no names. At home their paper never really talked about Hogwarts except when it pushed its own political agenda. “I guess it makes sense why he’d be frustrated.” it made more sense now in a sense. Her antics back home would have been considered stupid, but they wouldn’t have taken it seriously. As they worked, she went quiet if Hogwarts was under watch for the prophet it might be worse than she thought. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I have a track record with getting on people’s bad side. It’s a gift… or a curse depends on how you look at it.”

"I think we all can get on people's bad side if we interact with the wrong people," Keith said, shrugging as he finished another pot and set it with its sibling cuts on the tray. "Especially when you're joining a new environment, or when life's changing too much too fast." He knew that from experience. He'd made a right fool of himself with the whole Rowan thing, then again with Matthew...and he still cringed at himself when he thought of certain parts of his and Lyric's relationship. "Just take some time, get to know how the school runs, and you'll be fine."

Maybe it wasnt so much the wrong person, but how she interacted with them; not that she needed toxic people in her life, he could be right on that account. Eiliyah knew how over critical she was about herself which could sometimes make her seem weak, but after all she'd been through how could one blame her? It took her a moment to come to realize people would see her as attention seeking and craving a pity party, but that was never the case. Perhaps she needed to try her hand at confidence without being piss drunk. As she tried to finish another stubborn plant she decided she may as well ask him more questions. He seemed welcome to them. "How do people do it? I mean, how can people be so confidant and strong when the odds are stacked against them?" She swatted the plant hard again as it readched to grab at her curls. Eiliyah finally mamaged to get in in the pot and she looked over at Keith's pots mentally cursing, impressed with his skill. "How the hell do you have double my amount?"

Keith laughed lightly, absently shifting in place along with the music that was much quieter than it would have been if he was alone. "Well, I am the professor," he said, glancing over at Eiliyah briefly, considering the rest of what she'd said. "A lot of people who seem confident and strong when everything is against them aren't actually, they're putting on a face. Sometimes, you have to fake it for a little while until you feel it for real.
"Sometimes you need a friend to drag it out of you, or a job, a hobby, something to focus on and get good at." He lifted the pot in his hand as if to say see?. Herbology was one of the things he was best at, and seeing that people enjoyed his class, even students who didn't care for the subject, was definitely an ego boost.

Eiliyah felt like she understood, it was simple in concept but difficult in execution. Next time she was faced with difficulty she would try faking it, as he said, and maybe she could get over her anxiety... or at least hide it. She could barely hear the music but her lips quirked up in a smile. Eiliyah watched him from the corner of her eyes turning to survey the plant in his hands; he had a point she needed a hobby. Turning back to the plant she thought about politics and her parents it was something she was interested in. "My parents, before we went on the run, have been fighting for our policies to continue giving muggleborns and halfbloods as many right as those of us born pureblood." She stopped what she was doing to give him her full attention. "Back home society is welcoming, but they wanted to be more like here and less accepting-- so it started to change. The more we fought it the more they silenced those like us until the only ones left were either killed, imprisoned, or exiled." The idea of pureblood superiority never made sense to her. "Maybe that should be my focus. It's the only passion I have...," she paused as she tried to hear the music it made her want to dance, but with no booze in her system and the setting she was anxious just at the idea of dancing in front of her professor. "That and dancing." Which she was sure was a reason she landed in this mess, but she didn't regret it now maybe he could be her friend even if he was her professor.

"You know, there's a club in Hogsmeade," Keith said. "The librarian technically owns it, but I know she employs students often enough down there. Professor Blackwood-Hardt, the transfiguration one, he was a DJ there for a while years ago." It would be a safe place for the girl to dance and let loose a little, plus she would have responsibility and earn an income of her own.

Eiliyah didn't know there was a club in Hogsmeade. It probably meant it would be dry so close to a school, but if it meant being around the loud music, dancing and an excuse to be be late she'd take it. "Maybe I'll stop by the library one day and ask." It might help her get over her anxiety. "Are you always this nice or is it just cause I'm new?" she teased finishing up another plant.

Keith grinned and shrugged. "I guess I'm just one of those guys," he said. "I try to be nice, and I like to think I'm usually successful." It was practically a requirement when so many students thought his subject was a soft one that had little practical use. Not that he'd been a hellion before making his career decision, of course. "Would you rather I be mean? I could take you to greenhouse five..."
